4 Pillsbury’s Dough Boy

I heard from home today and it seemed that the 4 kits are doing well. I reserved this entry so that I can attach pictures later.

Don’t be confused because I used the term Pillsbury’s Dough Boy. It does not mean in any way they are all boys. Bunny breeders usually use this term to describe how the kits’ bellies should look like if their mummy has fed them nicely. So far I believe 3 out of 4 are fed well. Heard one is falling behind. Hope it picks up soon….

Lil^Peanut died….

The expected happened. LiL^Peanut died. When you breed 2 true dwarfs together, you will get peanuts. I learned this from Laurie Stroupe’s home page and well, true enough, LiL^Peanut survived only for a couple of hours. I believe even Adinna knew the outcome herself because she did not even clean up its umbilical cord nicely.

It was buried next to our beloved Unix. Its grandmother.

May it rest in PEACE…

Adinna kindled – 4 Pillsbury 1 Peanut

It was a great relief when I check in the next box this morning. It was as how all the seasoned breeders had advised me. Adinna seemed to be a great mother after all but this can only be confirmed tomorrow morning if we continue seeing Pillsbury’s dough boy tummies. Turned out she had 4 normal kits and 1 seemed to be peanut. If I am getting a peanut, does it mean that I was having dwarf genes all along? I hope the peanut survive but it looks kinda retard and still has got its umbilical cord attached. Seems weak and cold at touch too.

Adinna Chilling & Watching me giving headcount…
It’s a jungle in there…I see something moving!!!Do I see a broken black somewhere?Lil^Peanut – I really hope this one survives….

Nest Building

I noticed that Adina had built a nest at one of the corners of the cage. She had bit off the plastic mat I used to line the cage floor creating a circle. She then laid hay and fur around the circle. I believe she treats it as a little burrow entrance.

I knew straight away that it was time to put to good use the nest box I have built earlier. So I put the nest box in place and filled it with nesting materials like shredded paper and lots of dried timothy hay (1st & 2nd cuts).

To my surprise she collected all the materials in her mouth and started building a nest away from the nest box. How frustrating! It took me some effort to build those nest boxes!

Anyhow, I am worry sick because it has been raining cats and dogs lately and if she do not get those kits in the nest box, they will surely die of hypothermia. I hope she will deliver at the right time so at least I could warm up any kit that gets scattered in the cage.

Rabbit Genetics

I was reading through the history of Holland Lops (yet again…) today and something struck my head. It was written in many materials that Holland Lop was developed using French Lop, Netherland Dwarf and also English Lop.

So it got me thinking of the possibility of breeders getting specimens the likes of either one of those breeds. Somewhere along the breeding, I believe some breeders may encounter some kits growing up having the resemblance of French Lop for instance. Since genetics is something quite unpredictable, I believe that there is a POSSIBILITY.

Meaning to say, those Holland Lops that do not adhere to the breed standards I believe are manifestations of these genes.

Tidal waves?

I was observing both bandie’s and adina’s tummies while they were lying down. It was very exciting to see little tidal waves happening at the mid section of their bodies. This means only one thing – they are pregnant.

Skor is such a sharp shooter. I hope all the kits are healthy and both of them will deliver without complications.
