Idioms & Quotes of the Show Rabbit World

If you have been in the rabbit world long enough, you might have come across many terms, statements, comments, idioms and quotes used in all sorts of situations. Some of these statements hold more meanings than they literally do. In this post, I hope to help explain and decipher what all these terms mean. A word of caution, I am no urban dictionary and what I write in this post is for entertainment sake so please do not take it too seriously.

Cute

This is the word most widely used by breeders to comment on pictures of rabbits owned by another breeder. It is a very polite way of saying, “I am so not into this one”. In other words, it could mean that the bunny in question is not good enough. On a better note, if it is a very young rabbit, this word means exactly what it means. Every 4 weeks old bunny is cute right?

Potential/Promising

Please take this ugly thing out of my barn! These two words are related to “I will not sell what I don’t intend to keep”. There are two sides to these two words. Some inexperienced breeders are unable to evaluate younger stock and have no patience to grow out the juniors that they have at a particular point of time. I am sure most of us have heard or read about the story of Ugly Duckling. Some young rabbits will bloom into very beautiful adults if given the time and good care. Not all breeders use these terms loosely, some really mean what they say and those that they are offering for sale are in fact very beautiful promising and potential show stoppers. I believe it matters who you are dealing with.

I will not sell what I don’t intend keep

I find this statement rather interesting. I believe the question that should follow when this statement is used plainly should be, “Then why aren’t you keeping it?”. I would rather complete the sentence by saying, “I do not sell anything that I do not intend to keep, but the fact is that I have too many beautiful rabbits with limited cages so I have decided to part with this one to make more space”. The crude me would rather say, “I do not sell anything I do not intend to keep, but the fact is, I won’t keep it and I hope you will make something good out of it”. Oh give me a break!

If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything

When I have nothing good to say, I say it ANYWAY! I don’t give a sh*t how your delicate mushy little heart feels! I am brutally honest and every word that comes from my mouth draws blood. That’s how cruel I am. ROFL! It is true that it is a small world and in the bunny world, there are many taboos and discussion of one’s rabbit is liken to discussing religion in certain countries (everything is sensitive). So in order not to offend anyone’s feelings, it is best to keep words like “your rabbit is fugly” to yourself! Even if your “most honest” opinion is being sought after, please refrain from saying anything bad because rabbit people can be very brutal!

We have a very good representation of the breed but…

This is something we might have heard during shows and it simply means that the rabbits are still not good enough in the opinion of the judge. You do not have to agree and clear out your entire herd because another judge may come along and say the same thing about your new herd of rabbits.

So as you can see, there are many representations or interpretations as to the vast amount of words in the rabbit world. We humans are far more complicated than rabbits. When a rabbit performs a binky, it literally means it is happy. But when someone smile at you, there might be thousands of curse words going through his or her mind at that exact moment. It really depends on how you carefully craft your sentence and ask the right questions.

How I would like to say it differently? Being the honest (broke) bloke I am, I usually tell people my most honest opinion of my rabbits and that they (buyers) should understand that nice rabbits are very difficult to come by. If they are breeders, they should know that there are substantial work to be done to obtain a “show stopper”. No “regular” breeder should expect to have a perfect rabbit handed over to them on a silver platter (unless you have a lot of cash to burn). But in actual fact, I have been given very beautiful rabbits to begin with by extremely generous people and I try my best to do the same with breeders with good intentions.

If only dealing with people is as easy and innocent as dealing with rabbits, the world will be a better place…

Regarding Animal Welfare

One of the toughest questions to answer in life is the “Chicken or Egg first?” question. I for one do not think that I will ever be able to answer this question. The thought of  whether the first ever chicken on earth was in fact hatched from an egg can bring further confusion when one wonders about which chicken laid that first egg itself.

When I think about animal welfare, the question that comes to mind is whether animal shelters come first or breeders come first and who is responsible for the overpopulation of unwanted animals.

Do breeders encourage shelters to thrive and vice versa?

My other question is, will shelters and welfare societies be happy to relinquish themselves if there are no more animals to rescue? Ideally, we hope to have a world that is without strays and unwanted animals. Today, welfare organizations and shelters are heavily supported by donations and sponsorship and it makes me wonder if their existence indirectly encourages breeders to breed knowing well that they will cease to exist without unwanted animals.

When animal shelters put hundreds of animals to sleep through euthanasia, it is deemed justifiable because there is not enough space to accommodate the unwanted animals. But when the thought is shifted to the source of the unwanted animals – the breeders, it is a different labeling altogether if they are found to cull unwanted animals. It turns out to be animal cruelty. I just cannot make sense out of this double standard.

We are always told to solve problems by targeting the root cause. In this case, if we target the root cause, the responsibility will fall onto the breeders’ hands and if the problem is solved at the root level, shelters and welfare organizations will cease to exist. Wouldn’t that be an ideal situation?

One suggestion to rehabilitate people found being cruel to animals is to send them to work at shelters. I suggest that we go a little further when dealing with unscrupulous breeders.

Breeders found to be operating animal mills with animals living in bad conditions should be sent to shelters to administer the euthanasia procedure for unwanted animals. The number of animals that they euthanize commensurate with the degree of their “cruelty”. For example, for every animal found living under deplorable condition, they are required to euthanize 2 unwanted animal in the shelter.

In imposing such regulations, it is hoped that these irresponsible individuals will come to their senses and eventually, we shall live in a shelter and welfare free world.

But after all said and done, enforcement is still key.

It’s Been A While Part 2

I am sure some of you have been wondering what happen to all the long articles and stories from Tru-Luv Rabbitry. Where are all the cute baby bunny photos? And all sorts of questions. It’s has indeed been a very long time since I last sat down here to really write an interesting piece. I am afraid that I will be disappointing you once more. ROFL…

The fact is, I really do not have anything interesting to write about lately. I have had my “HIGH” in convention and nothing will be able to top that anytime soon. I have been busy with other commitments and priorities in life. I guess that is what happen when bunny is not 100% of one’s life. There’s the family, the day job and many more that gets in the way during the course of a day.

There are a few kits that I am pretty excited about and they are always cute at that age of course. But it all has been pretty good I believe.

I am also happy to have a couple of vets that I love working together with to solve certain issues. Nothing makes me happier to share and discuss with my vets the course of action to take on certain things. And I love sharing my experience and knowledge with them whenever they call me and ask about bunnies. It feels good being able to share and help someone else along the way. I am surprised that some solutions that I suggest does not even have to be rabbit related! ROFL…

Anyway, it has been a great weekend and I hope everyone will have a good week ahead! And don’t forget to get your supplies from TinyCritterz.com. We have been working hard to bring you the conveniences and please make full use of the services!

No more belly dancing please!

Say What?

It is always nice to keep in touch with Tru-Luv rabbit owners. Every once in a while I receive very encouraging and happy messages from my buyers and adopters. I recently received one that brightens up my day and it reads:

“Baby is a joy!! We brag about her to anyone who would listen!! She’s a diva, picky about her fresh vege and has attitude but at the same time, she is perfectly toilet trained! Would come on command, would play n would snuggle with her head on my lap… Etc etc. Friends n family are amazed by her puppy likeness! Keep in touch!”

This is not the first time that I am told that a Tru-Luv rabbit is like a puppy. I was told by a few others that their Tru-Luv bunny will jump up the bed and snuggle up for the night. The best part is, they will still go back to their potty for business! Happiness is what they say it is, “PRICELESS”!

New Header

So how do you like our new Header Picture up there?

If you look closely, it is a mosaic of most (if not all) of Tru-Luv rabbits throughout the 5 years that I have raised Holland Lops. There has been some repetition in there as the picture is made up of more than 2000 small pieces. I have not kept 2000 rabbits in 5 years – ROFL!

This new header is to commemorate 5 years of Tru-Luv Rabbitry which falls on 18th June 2012. I really wish I could do something much more interesting on this wonderful day. We shall see when the time comes.

I realized that it has been a while since a good post has been written. That is life I guess as inspirations come and go. Some days are filled with words and other days we only have images on mind. Perhaps in our daily struggles and challenges, we might have lost sight of our objectives and goals. Or maybe time is not on our side to allow us to achieve those goals/objectives.

After visiting the convention at Indy, my views on things have changed. My priorities have definitely shifted a little. As much as Holland Lops are my passion, I find myself looking forward to seeing my dear friends again. Whenever I miss my friends, I would go through the video that I made or those photos taken during that trip.

It is sad sometimes that I feel that I do not belong here. The only thing that still inspires and makes me happy is knowing the fact that there are good bunny owners out there. The only few are those that I cherish most though we seldom meet up. It is really strange because we all live very near each other. I think we really need to have a hangout place for all rabbit owners. We should all come together to talk rabbits all day long – without any hidden agenda or intention.

The USA is so huge and even there is a show during the weekends, many people drive for hours just to come together to have fun.

Well, at least this is something to think about, for now…

Tru-Luv Oh Baby, Tru-Luv Oh Baby…

I just figured out that the name Tru-Luv could have been came out of my subconscious mind. When I was younger, I have heard of this song but it didn’t struck me until yesterday that it came on the radio. To be honest, Madonna is one of my favourite music artists. The song I am talking about is…

Tru-Luv Oh Baby….

All together now!

Get Ready To Adopt!

If you are thinking of getting a pet rabbit, you may want to consider adoption instead of purchasing. A couple of days back, there was an article in The Star newspaper regarding the rabbit woes that our neighbor country Singapore is facing (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/1/17/asia/10273080&sec=asia). For such a small country, the number of abandoned pet rabbits is staggering. The HRSS must have their hands full trying to get new owners for all these abandoned bunnies. Here’s a link to their facebook page on the updates of their bunny rescues stories – https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.222141714492334.58816.171689892870850

In Malaysia, we are unable to obtain a statistics as we do not have the HRSS but there has been clear indication that there are rabbits being put up for adoption nonetheless. It is sad that rabbits has become a fad/passing phase as the Year of the Dragon gets closer.

For those of you thinking of giving up your rabbits, please do not release them to parks or jungles as your domesticated rabbits will not be able to fend themselves. But if you are reading this, I am sure you should be civilized and learned enough to know that already. I urge all readers who know of anyone contemplating giving up their pet rabbit(s) please talk some sense into them so that they will continue caring for their pets!

Pet rabbits released in the park/jungle/public places will cause a huge problem like what we once read about what happened to the University of Victoria (British Columbia) – http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/08/rabbits-gone-wild-on-canadian-campus/.

PLEASE DO NOT ABANDON YOUR RABBITS!!!
