Passing On The Gene Pool

As usual, there were quite a number of inquiries since the birth of BlueBerry’s kits and as usual I am again in a very difficult position. Why is it so difficult?

Being one of the pioneers of bringing in Holland Lops breed into Malaysia, I must be very selective in passing on the gene pool to responsible owners. And through my observations, the market is filled with many opportunists that never fails to take advantage of the situation to exploit any “commodities” in their hands.

It is very apparent that wherever the MONEY is, there will always be people rushing to those “gold mines”. The measure that I would like to take is to make sure that the opportunists do not exploit rabbits in Malaysia. Looking into the mixed breed market alone, I can see that it has been exploited beyond recognition.

I am truly sadden by this situation. But in order for me to hold on my stance, many has labelled me as stuck up because they cannot accept my approach in this matter. And that itself also goes to show that they will not be the right people to pass on my rabbits’ gene pool.

Some of the measures that I have taken include being super fussy and choosy on the inquiries. I normally go through a little background check or interview to test out of the basic care knowledge of potential new owners. I always emphasize and encourage the new owners to consider neuter/spay if they are not planning to breed their rabbits. I try to ensure that they never ever ever cross breed rabbit(s) they get from me with any other breeds. Be it intentionally or by accident (this would require the taming of desire of letting their rabbits mate on the human counterpart). It sadden me really that some human beings have greater desire to see their rabbits breed than the raging hormones of the rabbits themselves.

I do not think this is a selfish step and making it seemed as if I am the only one that has the privilege to breed. I have my beliefs on how responsible breeding should be and I impose them on potential owners of rabbits (given the fact that their hormones are greater than of their rabbits). Since I have no control over the actions of the new owner, all I can do is to continue educating them instead of just saying NO, YOU SHOULD NOT DO THIS OR THAT.

I am not disallowing people to breed if they do it with ONE GOOD REASON – BREED TO IMPROVE THE BREED.

Wham-Bang-Goodbye!

Thinking back, I should have taken a video of the entire mating process. Yes, another mating session has taken place in Tru-Luv Rabbitry. This time, between Skor and Noobie. And I must say, this is the fastest mating ever!

Under 1 minute. Seriously, it is the fastest recorded time ever. Well, I did not exactly hold up a stop watch and take down the time but it was really fast.

Noobie was just in Skor’s cage for a good 5 minutes and I took her out. I’ll be expecting kits on 10th August 2008. I always count on Three Little Ladies Rabbitry’s breeding calculator to get a good date. They are expected to arrive on a Sunday!

I have chosen this date for mating because I wanted Noobie to kindle on a weekend when I am around to assist in case of emergency. For those new to breeding, this is called planned breeding.

Bald nursing doe?

I have no photos to share today. Just wanted to share that BlueBerry has been pulling fur for her nest and I believe it is becoming quite excessive. She now has bald spots. I did use Furminator on her last night and that itself has taken off loads of fur from her. I notice she had pulled more this morning and the right side of her lower abdomen has a big patch of bald spot now.

I really do hope she stops pulling fur as she has got more than enough in the nest box. Whenever I check on the kits, I am pulling out fur rather than the kits! LOL…

I am hoping to get connected to the internet at home today. It is quite inefficient of the service provider to get my account activated only after 3 days of registration. You need 2 weeks to get internet connection up and running in this country. SAD!

One thing I realized is that this litter of Broken Blue kits may be the first batch of such variety in Malaysia. I have not come across any Broken Blue Holland Lops in Malaysia. It is just an amazing gift. Hope to see more colors in the Malaysian shore!

1 Day old kits

So far, all the 4 kits are healthy and their colors are slowly showing. I am hoping to get blue kits and so far, they do seemed to be broken blue as the patches are not dark enough to be black. We’ll just see how they grow up since their fur will emerge pretty soon.

And I owe it to BlueBerry that I have to mention she is indeed a sweet mummy. Plump kits this morning. So I guess she acted bad the last litter for a reason.

Photos:

Since I am in the topic of kits, I just wanted to highlight my experience being a “show breeder”. The amazing thing about breeding show rabbits is the many “surprises” Mother Nature gives to us. We can only speculate and guess through the pedigree what we are going to get from breeding two rabbits. The quality of the product is not up to us to decide. If we can do that, it would mean that there will not be shows or competition to ascertain whose rabbits are closest to the breed standards. In short, there is no 100% perfect bunny in this world. We all work towards the breed standard, that’s the best we can do in our breeding program.

That would mean that breeding a Grand Champion to a Grand Champion not always guarantees us 100% show kits. Likewise, breeding Pet Quality to Pet Quality not necessary do not produce show quality. I must also stress here that by breeding 2 grand champs, you increase the chances of getting show or grand champs. The key words here are INCREASED CHANCES.

The peanut died & other topics

Any seasoned breeder will tell you that this is expected when you breed dwarf rabbits. The peanut died late evening. I have seen quite a few peanuts by now because each and every litter that I have so far has 1 of them. But I must say this little peanut is really well formed just that its size is half of its siblings. There were no deformity at all.

I was contemplating to make this post because I wanted to skip writing today just to dedicate the day to PEACE. A lot has been happening in our world today and I just wanted to feel the peace and dedicate a day not posting. But I just cannot seemed to get my blog out of my head.

The 1st day inspection on the nest box showed that BlueBerry has pulled more fur and lines the box well. The kits seem a little plump so I assume she has fed them. Will have to check on them again.

I also need to write something that I notice about skittish rabbits and my beliefs. Holly Hope is a sweetheart because I handled her since birth making sure she gets fed well. And I really notice a difference in her behavior. She will always greet me whenever I am near her cage. I believe when you spend a lot of time with your rabbits, they will not fear you. I read about some rabbits that inflict great injuries on their owner and I truly believe it is because they are not handled often.

I do not see anything wrong with rabbits that are skittish provided that their owners are not complaining. But for me personally, I prefer to have tame and steady rabbits as pets and because that is a built-in behavior, it may also be passed down to their offspring later. I guess it is more of a personal preference. Some people like to just leave their rabbits unattended except for daily feeding and others prefer to have more interaction with their pets.

For me, I look for a complete package with good psychological and physical balance.

I will take more photos and post them soon. Hope to get the internet connection up and running next week!

It is SPRING @ TLR!!!

BlueBerry’s Kits arrived 1 day early

I woke up this morning to find BlueBerry pulling her fur. My gut feeling told me that she will kindle really soon. So I go about as usual cleaning up the entire rabbitry and went out to have breakfast.

I came back and found what I felt as a degree of anxiousness in BlueBerry. She has since pulled more fur and I got the camera ready to capture the great moment.

I then continued going about doing some chores. Then I just felt curious so I went over to take a peek again and to my great surprise, she was kindling! I caught her “bum” facing out of the nest box while cleaning up the kits.

At approximately 3 pm she has finished kindling and the last head count was 4 normal kids, 1 peanut. After stopping the video recording, I was able capture a still photos of newly born kits.

Here are some photos:

This was taken right after she was done kindling. Rare shot.

At writing time, the peanut is still alive.

P.S. : I just had to write this statement – “I HATE COPY CATS”.

My bunnies & internet

Ever since I started blogging about my rabbits, I just cannot live without internet access. I am just so addicted to this entire blog thing that I found myself thinking what to blog next all the time.

The blog statistics showed that I have a constant flow of readers dropping by the blog and I hope to increase the number further. There is no polling feature on wordpress so I cannot start a poll on favourite topics. I have yet to go through the most accessed pages. Once I ascertain what topics capture the attention of my readers I will write more of those topics. Previously there were many hits to my adoption page and I have since taken the page out of my blog because I do not have anything to offer. But I find the number of hits to the adoption page disturbing because it actually goes to show that many people want things for FREE.

That is definitely not a good sign because people will only go for things that they do not really care about for FREE. If something is of value to a person, they will spend some effort and money to acquire it.

I just got the phone line fixed yesterday and now waiting for the internet activation. Once I have got internet access, I will start posting photos.

Many people are still oblivious to the breeds of rabbits in Malaysia and I have an intention to write about the different breeds of lop ear rabbits and include some photos as example. Before I do that, I will need to get permission to showcase some photos that I have come across in other breeders’ blog/website. I hope these breeders are willing to allow me featuring their photos. And also hope that I will have the time to go through websites for photos.

Why after 8 weeks?

One of the point I like to drive into a potential rabbit owner’s mind is that one should never ever buy rabbits younger than 8 weeks.

It is very obvious that 4 weeks old kits are irresistably cute and that is the main selling factor for pet stores here. If a person genuinely love an animal, it does not matter if it is cute or not. I believe we all have to understand that at the end of the day pet store is a business. And in order to sell their livestock, they need to prolong the shelf lives of their livestock. Therefore that is the reason why they take in younger rabbits.

Kits between the age of 4 weeks and 6 weeks seemed to look alright on the outside. But that is the time the entire flora content of their stomach is developing. Many people do not know that during this crucial period, the kits will feed on their mother’s cecal to get those nutrients that they themselves are unable to produce. Consuming their mother’s cecal will help them build up their stomach flora content so that they are able to be weaned off in a healthy manner.

One may be lucky to have their underage rabbit grow up healthy without any complications. Most of the time that is not the perfect scenario.

An ideal pet store for me is one that only sells pet supplies and not livestock. But unfortunately for the local market, livestock brings in the biggest part of the profit. So, since we are in a deadlock, the best compromise we can have is pet store continue selling livestock but they should ensure that their conducts are ethical.

So the next time you are tempted to pick up that underage kit, always think twice and be prepared for complications if you bring it home. We as consumer have the power to reverse this situation. If only we stop buying underage rabbits, then the demand for older rabbits will force business to be ethical. Businesses are formed to meet the demands of their customers. So who have the power to decide?

YOU AND ME.
