Just Another Day

A typical day at Tru-Luv Rabbitry is nothing but sleeping. Every rabbit will get their ample sleep time which makes up the biggest part of their daily agenda. They have their free flow of Hay and sky juices.

In the evening, they get their daily servings of pellets and fresh vegetables every other day. Due to space constraint, they get their daily run on rotation.

I am still thinking about how to setup a neutral run so that everyone would have a chance to have a free range without too much hassle and work on my side. From what I observed previously, they do mark with loads of pellets and pee. Much research is needed on this and I shall be setting up their playpen once I get an idea on how to create a nice run for them indoors.

I have yet to allow Holly Hope having free range of the house as I still have loads of live wires lying around. Hope to get the house bunny proofed ASAP.

Have a great week ahead everyone!

Wham-Bang-Goodbye!

Thinking back, I should have taken a video of the entire mating process. Yes, another mating session has taken place in Tru-Luv Rabbitry. This time, between Skor and Noobie. And I must say, this is the fastest mating ever!

Under 1 minute. Seriously, it is the fastest recorded time ever. Well, I did not exactly hold up a stop watch and take down the time but it was really fast.

Noobie was just in Skor’s cage for a good 5 minutes and I took her out. I’ll be expecting kits on 10th August 2008. I always count on Three Little Ladies Rabbitry’s breeding calculator to get a good date. They are expected to arrive on a Sunday!

I have chosen this date for mating because I wanted Noobie to kindle on a weekend when I am around to assist in case of emergency. For those new to breeding, this is called planned breeding.

Kicking kits?

Anyone with a pregnant doe will usually get anxious as kindling date draws near. Past experiences taught me that sometimes if I look close & attentive enough, I might see kits kicking against the doe’s lower abdomen.

BlueBerry looks quite plump and heavier than before. Of course there is no guarantee that she is pregnant until the kindling date. But there are some tell tale signs i.e. nest building.

I was observing her stomach last night and I thought I noticed a little thud (kick) from within. Previously I always mistaken the movement of the gut as movement of kits but I do believe to a certain extend, if the movement of the gut is very prominent, it may happen to be the uterus horn pushing the gut closer to the stomach surface. That for me is one of the tell tale sign too. Funny how I come out with my own theory eh? Well, sometimes we just cannot explain science too much especially for me as I normally depend on my gut feeling when it comes to my rabbit.

Well, as an owner to a pet, we are more intuitive to our own furkid and most of the time we can see the differences.

So I am just hoping that she will kindle come 6th July. I am in the midst of planning out Noobie’s breeding time too so that the kindling day falls on a weekend. Easier for me to intervene and be prepared for emergency cases if (touch wood) something bad happens on a weekend.

It is done!

It has been a really busy weekend and I am still waiting for them to come install the internet service. Need to get the phone line up first.

Anyhow, just want to share just one photo. Please bear with me on the quality of the photo as it was taken using the handphone.

I am very please with the entire setup.

Here’s BlueBerry and Skor:

Spraying Doe?

Was trying to catch Latara in her cage today and to my surprise, she sprayed at me!!!

I know when a buck sprays at you, it means that he loves you. But this is the first time I have ever been sprayed by a doe! I was shocked with her behavior so I had to reconfirm to see if I have sexed her wrongly. I am very sure it was a slit when I take a look and I am still a little puzzled over the spraying behavior.

Since she’s at the highest level of the cage, I was wondering if I should put her on the first level so that I do not get peed at again.

Holly Hope has join her in the new place. We’re going to shift in by Saturday. A new beginning for everyone!

New Rabbitry Shelf: Proof Of Concept #1

I bought 2 shelving units earlier this afternoon to prepare for the move to our new place. I must say that it did not go as well as expected. It is mainly because firstly, the length of the shelving units were measured in millimeters and it was 1200mm. 1200mm is a little less than 48 inches and I thought it would be alright because my cages are barely 24 inches each when I measured them. Turned out, the length of the shelves cannot take two 24 inches cages! I need to improvise the length of the cages (by cutting of course). I will get that sorted out later.

Secondly, the Chloroplast sheet is exactly 4 feet (48 inches) and I do not have enough length to fold up the sides for it to work as pee guard. DARN! I went through it be trial and error and finally realize that I could use the wooden board that came with the shelving units as support for the Chloroplast sheets. I guess I need to find longer Chloroplast sheets then.

Overall, I would say that my first POC for a DIY rabbitry shelving unit with waste management FAILED badly!

Nonetheless, here are some photos:

Silent moments

It is so frustrating because the wait seemed to take forever. I am waiting to shift into the new place so that I can start on building some neat shelves to accommodate the rabbits. I have roughly planned out the waste management system and that will help me eliminate the use of litter materials. Getting rid of the need for litter materials will help me save a lot in the long run. It will not only save my pocket from running dry, but it will also stop contributing to global warming indirectly.

Other than that, nothing much seemed to be happening in the rabbitry but I am hoping for many interesting happenings once we shift the herd over to the new place.

The herd will first go through a rigorous fur mites elimination regime before we can actually bring them over to the new place. Stay tuned for more interesting postings.

BTW, I noticed that my blog stats is showing a decline in the number of visitors. I guess people just got all they need and have decided to quit coming back. Well, I hope not!

Holland Lop Varieties vs Human Varieties

A seasoned hobbyist of the Holland Lop or any other breed for the matter will tell you that every rabbit breed comes in different shapes, sizes and colors. When we say variety in rabbits, it mostly refers to the color of the rabbits in questioned.

But beyond the colors, I would also like to talk about behaviors. We all know that every individual rabbit have different behaviors and they are all unique. Some are nastier than another and some are sweet little creatures.

And looking beyond rabbits, we have their human counterparts. I have came across many rabbit owners that exhibit a wide range of behaviors. I believe breeders in US can also relate to my experience. More so when they have rabbit shows all around the country.

That is why, in our hobby, we must be aware and be vigilant on the tell tale signs of good and bad rabbit owners/breeders. I have my fair share of experience with ethical and unethical breeders. By experiencing all these hurdles I am able to identify a trustworthy and sincere rabbit owner/breeder from the opposites.

I just do not understand why sometimes certain people act the way they do. What is the point if you do not put in some passion to what you like doing? I believe to a certain point of time, most are raising their rabbits all for the wrong reasons. With this sort of attitude, I believe the hobby wouldn’t last very long.

I do pray and hope that all rabbit owners/breeders have better temperaments. If they do not, perhaps we should start culling and blame it on the genes.

Note: This must be the first time I posting in a sarcastic manner. Sorry for that as I just realized something that pisses me off big time.

To Save Or Get A New Bunny: My View On The Lives Of Malaysian Rabbits

I am not too sure about other countries but in Malaysia, rabbits are one of the cheapest pets and also easily purchased. As you would guess, it is cheap because the supply is always greater than the demand. The current market price for a local rabbit (mixed breed) is in the range of $40 to $80.

That being said, most vets in Malaysia are not rabbit savvy. Why? For the same reason as above. It is cheap to get a rabbit and to treat a rabbit for any illnesses is expensive. So either the vet could not be bothered to recommend the treatment or the owner could not be bothered paying for medical fees which are higher than the purchase price of a little bunny. The price of medical treatment begins at $20 and depending on the severity of individual cases, it may cost up to hundreds.

Sad? It is super duper sad case.

Over the weekend, something happened that gave me a little hope. People are starting to go to vets for treatments. Soon, vet would have to keep up with the demands of rabbit owners going to them for consultations and treatments. That is a good thing.

Vets who depends a lot on the dogs and cats business should start equip themselves with sound rabbit knowledge because rabbit matters as much as dogs and cats.

I am glad to have a good vet to help me with my rabbits. But for those that do not have a rabbit-savvy vet, what I would suggest is to do some research on the common illnesses, write down a few possible treatments and get your vet to administer those treatments. Some vets are honest enough to admit that they are not well versed but are willing to help – these are the best to work with. Most of the time, when a rabbit owner brings his/her rabbit to the vet, it would have been a life and death situation. So in my opinion, since it is already a hopeless situation, I would try anything to at least fight for a 50:50 chance in saving my rabbit’s life.

Rabbits are indeed great pets to have. Don’t you agree?
