Seychel is not well

Sometimes I really wonder why in the world am I raising such a difficult breed. It is like keeping a python or a tiger knowing very well one day it will swallow you up whole. Holland Lops, they do swallow you up whole in terms of emotionally and psychologically.

Just when I wrote about how I have reminded myself not to take any of them for granted. Seychel stopped eating and drinking. It is as if it is a jinx to treat Holland Lops well. Throw them aside and they’ll thrive, baby them and they’ll die. LITERALLY!

Yes, I was “baby-ing” Seychel before she started acting up! How frustrating!

My initial diagnosis is that she’s beginning to have a G.I. Stasis problem. But her vital signs are indicating many other possibilities.

Please pray for her and I do hope that she’ll recover soon.

It is a challenging breed to begin with, that’s if they just stop dying. No wonder people that get into this breed quit as soon as they begin. Am I beginning to give up?

Not quite but more of “Que Sera Sera” (Whatever Will Be Will Be)!

Sunday Chillax!

I made some observation on all the bunnies’ behavior while using the run. Most of them like to dig at the 4 corners and causes all the wood shavings to go flying out the play pen. I have since placed a corner litter tray at one of the corners. I then place tiles on the other 3 corners. The tiles worked out very well. I put cardboard boxes on top of 2 of the tiles and guess what?

They love chilling out on top of the cooling tiles!

What On Earth Did I Miss?

It has been about 2 weeks since I last took photos of the juniors and I just cannot believe my eyes when I took them out one by one for an impromptu photo session.

Oh my Goodness Gracious! Eclipse is slowly showing off his big head and nice ear carriage. There is a reason why most breeders hold on to “potentials” for a little longer and I am actually experiencing that at this moment. I would like to hold on to Eclipse for a little while longer. Charl is definitely going although she looks promising, I am letting her go mainly because of color.

I better not waste too much time on words. Let’s leave the talking to the photos alright?

Holly Hope The Awesome Singleton (LOL)

I sure hope this one goes into Disapproving Rabbits

Moesha is turning out like Noobie

Eclipse’s massiveness is coming back again

I like those curvatures on his head and those ears look kind of good don’t you think?

Last but not least, my lovely Charlyz

All New DIY Pee Guard!

First of all, I must thank Lindsey of 4 Kings Rabbitry for sharing photos of her rabbitry. It was through those photos that I got the inspiration to venture into another Proof Of Concept for the betterment of Meadow Haven.

I have just completed the DIY pee guard to improve the cages further so that it would be more effective in avoiding spills out of the bottom trays. So far it worked well for Luna, my first happy “customer”.

Success!!!

A Foreign Object, Successful Jumps & Perspiration

Every morning, I will give every Junior bunny a handful of Oxbow Alfafa. I am normally very sleepy and do not really go through every clutch of hay that I pick up. In the evening while I was cleaning up their quarters, I found a gruesome foreign object in Noobie’s feeding bowl. When I scrutinize it further, guess what I found?

Locust!!! The upper half of a giant locust that is. This is not the first time I found locus in Alfafa Hay. I guess it is a sign that the hay are of good quality and therefore, having locust in every bag would mean that less pesticide were used. I hope it was half a locust that got into the feeding bowl and not a whole locus because if it was, then either Noobie or one of the kits had chewed the other half of it.

This evening was my first attempt training Luna to jump over the DIY obstacle I made last night. I started off letting her roam around the kitchen area and she just did not stop urinating near my cabinets. After 3 puddles of pee, she got warmed up roaming around. Then I started putting her behind the obstacle and gave her a few nudges while saying the word “JUMP”. I guess she has got more SHOW genes in her than JUMPING genes. First few minutes she just show posed:

Since she was show posing, I got distracted and started looking out for standard conformation instead. And I notice something very obvious. I am starting to doubt that she and the rest of BlueBerry’s litter was pure Broken Blue. They have got darker markings on their faces, ears and root of their tails. I am now wondering if they are Broken Siamese Blue Point. I do not know if there is such a variety but I am quite sure they do not look pure blue to me. At times their lighter shade looks lilac to me. Skor’s a chocolate carrier and he being broken black and crossing with BlueBerry which is a solid blue I wonder if this color was possible.

Alright, I suddenly realize that I have a mission this evening noticing the obstacle is still standing upright in front of me so I came back to earth.

After a few more tries putting her behind the obstacles and repeating myself, I finally got something going:

I made her go a few rounds and she started perspiring below her nose! I notice all my rabbits “sweat” below their noses when the temperature rises a little. Not to mention I was sweating all over myself. I need to find somewhere cooling to train next time (the living room perhaps if she stops urinating that much). I believe that a little bunny has got much shorter attention span compared to its owner (suspected with ADD) and I should extend training time gradually. 5 successful jumps is good enough to call it a day.

And while I put her back into her cage, she gave me a good scratch on the shoulder – I took it as a pat on the back well done! LOL…..

We’re at this juncture again…

For the past eight weeks or so I was so busy with work, scheduling the breedings of BlueBerry and Noobie. And within a blink of an eye, half of BlueBerry’s kits has gone to their new homes. How fast time flies.

The day after BlueBerry’s kits “graduated”, I saw her doing some binkies and I could almost see the glee on her face. She is a good mother but like many of us, she does not go the extra mile like Noobie. Noobie likes nudging her kits and I am sure some of our bunny friends that came the other day noticed that.

I must say that BlueBerry is a little huge to do binkies and she does look a little unnatural while at it. LOL…

Although she is not that type that goes the extra mile and get all mushy mushy lovie dovie with her kits, she did a great job nursing those little rascal up to 8 weeks.

Coming back to the real intention of this post, we’re going through the dry season again although it has been raining cats and dogs every evening. There isn’t much happening in the rabbitry at the moment except looking at the daily growth of Charl and Mo.

I really do hope that the daily visit counts to my blog will increase because at the moment, I am not too happy with the number of visits. I wonder if some of the numbers has gone to the blogspot mirror blog and thus, diluted my blog hits. The problem was because I started off blogging at blogspot and found that wordpress has better admin interface. Little did I know I could do more with blogspot. LOL. Nonetheless, I do get constant hits and hope all my readers will spread the word. My main intention and objective for this blog is not to market or sell my rabbits. I would love to know if it is informative enough to worth a visit by my readers. And as you can see, I do not have much advertising on this blog and this is just done for sheer fun.

A few have left comments on my blog and I really do appreciate it. And I did notice that most of my readers that has left comments are not Malaysians. I wonder what happened to Malaysians. I can see that they are quite verbal when it comes to political blogs. I guess they are much more interested in political blogs than blogs about pets. Come on Malaysia, you can do better. I am inviting all of you to leave a comment. Stop being the shy type hiding behind the keyboard, monitor screen and a nickname. It is high time we speak up and let others know what we like reading or not.

As you can see, I am quite tired doing all the typing and it would be really nice of you to just leave a line for me.

Thank you in advance.

Meadow Haven Is Larger Than Life!

I finally felt the wrath of Meadow Haven. Can you imagine that when a meadow has an outburst of long-bladed grass? We have these long-bladed grass growing in Malaysia that are called “lalang”. They are really a nuisance if you ever need to walk across a plain filled with them.

Anyway, things have not been going too well with the entire shelving system. Due to space constraint, I found it very difficult to clean up the entire shelving unit especially at the back where the pipes are. I was contemplating the entire day for an effective strategy to execute this super spring cleaning. My wife has been complaining that I still take too much time cleaning the rabbitry up on a daily basis and asked if I could try reverting back using the bottom trays with newspaper.

So here I was after an entire day of daydreaming about cleaning up the rabbitry (literally), I started removing things and temporarily placing them in the dining area. And I was well on my way of cleaning up the rabbitry. Or so I thought. Mid way my treacherous attempt, I felt as if being choked by Meadow Haven. It is quite apparent to me that I have created a monster that I was unable to tame. I found it so difficult to remove even the first level of cages.

Trying to recall how I got the entire thing together, I realized that 2 adults are needed to put the combined cages together. And I thought to myself how should I proceed from here.

Feeling very overwhelmed, I just reach for spots that I could manage and try to clean them up the best I could.

All in all, I was only able to clean up BlueBerry’s quarters and also slotted the 2 bottom trays back under the cages.

I am too tired at the moment and feeling the drag that I have got to continue this crazy exercise first thing in the morning.

There will be loads of vacuuming and wiping before all the trays are slotted back in. It is really ironic how I am still looking for the best way to have an easy to manage rabbitry.

More improvements to be thought of but for now, I need to put my head down for a good night sleep!

Idle Sunday

This will be the single post with the most photos of my herd. I am still trying to cope and figure out what really happened to Latara and I felt that before I loose anymore of them, it is only right for me to take a “family portrait”. None of the rabbits are left out in this photo session.

Just want to thank all who left comments and wishes. Really appreciate it guys & gals.

And to move on, I would like to churn up the little sense of humor that is left in me to present these photos:

While everyone’s asleep:

Guess what Skor’s up to?

Lastly, PEANUT NO MORE! This is little Charl today.

Heart Bunny?

If you keep multiple rabbits, I am sure you would agree with me that there sure to be one super favorite among the herd. My all time favorite is still Skor but he is molting at the moment so I am not giving him too much cuddles (I will die inhaling those fur). I can only spend time combing those loose fur out. Collected a bucketful today.

BlueBerry’s too pre-occupied with her kits at the moment so I am leaving her alone.

Noobie is busy being pregnant but she gets some pats from me everyday. She is as sweet as ever!

I must admit, Latara is the most neglected bunny at the moment. LOL! No physical abuse or anything just that she dun really like me touching her. That’s her behavior since young. She is high strung and does not like cuddles. I guess she has got more testosterones than progesterones (since she is the only doe that sprays). She is a little Tom Boyish. She does get her free run in the kitchen like the rest.

So I turned my attention to Holly Hope. I wanted to make her a full house bunny without the spaying but it is quite difficult to have fur and bunny poop around the house when you have a toddler around picking up every little thing that is in her path. There goes my intention of having a house bunny! LOL. Nonetheless when everyone’s in bed, I brought her into he living room and guess what!? She loves exploring the entire place!

The amazing things about Holly Hope is that, she is somehow very attached to me. I believe it was because I handled her so much since the day she was born, so much so that she sort of recognize me and is not afraid of me.

As for the title of this post, after reading through everything I have wrote so far, you must be thinking that Holly Hope is thus far my favorite?

You are wrong! I love all my bunnies the same! LOL!

And I am just so happy that I actually have more time to spend with them now as compared to previously when I only had the time to clean the cages.
