Goodbye 88th ARBA Convention, Indianapolis

Today being the last day of Convention, I cannot help but to feel sad. Although this hobby evolves around RABBITS, it is surprising to me that I am not feeling sad because I will miss seeing all these beautiful rabbits but rather, I will miss all the wonderful people that I have met. The real deal is that, it is not about rabbits after all but the friendship that you build upon rabbits. Rabbits are the true winner in this wonderful situation because it broke down all barriers of differences – culture and geographical location altogether. Who would have thought, an average Joe call Timothy Chan will end up in a place where Top Rabbit breeders gather to compete?

What I can share with my fellow Malaysians right now is that, the rabbit hobby here in the USA is really a big part of its AGRICULTURAL industry. We have to understand that rabbits are bred for many reasons beside for pets. And whatever the purpose for each breed is, breeders must breed for the best based on the Standard of Perfection laid down by ARBA. Although most breeds are raised for agricultural and commercial purpose, the “fancy” breeds are also included as part of the entire rabbit breeding industry.

And so what did Timothy Chan do in the 88th ARBA Convention?

To be honest, I have a lot of fun. For the first 2 days it was pretty intense because of the competition vibe. I learned a lot mostly through observation. Yesterday and today was a little laid back.

First, we had the HLRSC meeting to sort out some stuff. The highlight of the meeting for me was when my dad’s painting received an honorary mention because there is a raffle being put up by next year’s HLRSC Nationals (Washington) committee. I feel so proud of my dad and I really hope that the painting will raise substantial amount of funds for the organizing committee.

HLRSC Meeting

Then we went back to the show room for Holland Lop auction. I did not bid on any rabbits because I was unable to bring any home (heart breaking).

SOLD!

And to my surprise, I was asked to draw the lucky ticket for the HLRSC Raffles where 3 (a trio of) beautiful Holland Lops has been donated as the prize. Such an honor to be able to pick the winner for the raffle.

Picking the Lucky Winner!

The lucky winner was a youth breeder!

After the raffles, I was lucky to be able to attend Mr. Allan Ormond’s class for the youth. He is a renown/respected judge and I call him Gandalf of the bunny world. I learned so much in his session and I shall remember all the amazing knowledge that he has shared today.

Mr. Ormond, showing us how to look for a good Holland Lop

Before we left the show room, I helped to feed and water rabbits which without, my trip will not have been complete.

I have hay, feed and an apron just like a show breeder here. 🙂

I just feel overwhelm knowing that I will be leaving this wonderful place and its wonderful people. It makes me want to make a trip here every year. There is so much love here and it just blows my mind away. I really cannot thank all my friend here enough. I shall not mention names because I am afraid I might miss someone out and someone will be mad at me.

My friends here in Indy (you know who you are), a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you for making my 1st Convention the BEST experience of my LIFE! I love all of you and I can never thank all of you enough. You have showed me that there are things in life that goes beyond the dollar sign and all of you have inspired me to be kind and “pay it forward” whenever possible. I will miss all of you very much and I will be thinking of all of you everyday of my life.

On that note, I would like to share a quote that came to mind early this morning while trying to get myself out of my melancholic feeling and here goes:

“When your BIG Dream is fulfilled, you become a BIGGER person. You then dream LARGER dreams, work towards getting them fulfilled and you keep on GROWING!”

A Bunnyman’s Dream Do Come True

A taste of what's coming soon - photo courtesy of Julie

Around this time last year, I met a special person online. It was also the time of the 2010 ARBA Convention where a Holland Lop won BIS in the Open Show. The special person planted the idea that I should make a special visit to ARBA Convention. And as some of you might know and did follow my quest, I also attempted in the DiGi Youth – Free Your Ideas contest to win some funds but it was unsuccessful.

Little did I know, this little idea soon took a gigantic twist when my special friend started a Facebook group in hope to raise funds to make this idea and dream a reality. Some took the Facebook group as hard begging on my part but the immense support proved that I was LUVED! It feels like my dream has already come true being at the receiving end of such generosity and immense support. Some donated financially while others provided their moral support. I truly appreciate the support no matter what form, shape and sizes they come in.

The funds soon started pouring in from rabbit friends all around the USA. Soon more fund raising ideas were suggested and one in particular was to put a Holland Lop painting by my dad as an auction item. The auction went really well and in total, USD 1108 were raised for my air ticket to Indianapolis! Although, the amount did not cover the entire cost of my flight ticket, it was a mighty BIG help. And the shortage motivated me to work my butt off to save up more money for my DREAM TRIP. And that is the reason why you might have noticed that I have been inactive as far as blog updates is concerned.

For next few days, I will try to update my blog with photos from the 2011 ARBA Convention in Indianapolis. To date, over 23,000 rabbits has been entered in what is known as the MOTHER of all Rabbit Shows of the year.

I ask for your prayers for a safe trip and all of you fellow Malaysian bunny friends will be in my thoughts. I hope my trip will help me increase my knowledge in this hobby so that I can share with all of you.

I do not know what to expect for now but all I know is that, the average Joe in me will have a life long dream fulfilled in just a couple of days away. This is very exciting indeed and I cannot wait to meet all my friends in person. I also look forward to meeting new friends in this journey.

As I make my pilgrimage to the land of Milk & Honey, a place where I do not need to explain why I love rabbits, I would like to again share this video that I have put together in dedication to all my supportive friends in the hobby. Watching the video again, I cannot help but to feel moved and emotional. WHAT A JOURNEY IT HAS BEEN!!!

Thank you all very much for all the immense support! God bless you!

Reasons To Join ARBA (Tujuan Menjadi Ahli ARBA)

“What’s the reason we should join ARBA?”

This question totally caught me off guard and dumbfounded. I have been a member for so long, it did not dawn on me that I have totally lost the objective of joining this renown association. It has been such a norm for me to just renew my membership every year for the past few years.

It really serves as a reminder for me why I joined ARBA. Besides from being apart of the rabbit community at large here are 2 main reasons why I see people should join ARBA:-

1. Collecting Grand Champion Certificates

It all starts with Showing Rabbits. If a rabbit is to be registered by a registrar on behalf of ARBA, the owner must first be an active ARBA member. Without being a member, the rabbit in question has no owner to register against and therefore ARBA will not be able to track who is the owner of the rabbit. In short, in order to obtain the Grand Champion certificate, the owner must first be an active ARBA member and the rabbit must be registered and have obtained 3 GC legs.

2. Helping a club get ARBA Charter

In order for a rabbit club to obtain ARBA Charter, it must consist of a board of directors that are also ARBA members. So if you are interested to help get a local club/association obtain ARBA Charter, join as an ARBA member and volunteer yourself as one of the directors on the board. One of the main reasons why you would want to get a club or association chartered is because only ARBA Chartered club is allowed to purchase show sanctions.

Some of the myth that has been spreading here in Malaysia regarding ARBA membership:

Myth #1 – In order to issue pedigree, one must be an ARBA member – BULLSHIT. Anyone with high integrity can issue accurate pedigree.

Myth #2 – In order to tattoo rabbit, one must be an ARBA member – BULLSHIT. Just get a tattoo kit and start identifying your rabbits!

——————————————————————————————————————

Mitos #1: Untuk mengeluarkan pedigree/surat beranak, pemilik/penternak mesti menjadi ahli ARBA – TIDAK BENAR. Sesiapa yang jujur dan ikhlas boleh mengeluarkan pedigree/surat beranak tanpa meminta izin ARBA.

Mitos #2: Untuk tattoo arnab, pemilik/penternak mesti menjadi ahli ARBA – TIDAK BENAR. Para pemilik boleh meletakkan tattoo di atas arnab mereka dengan mengunakan set tattoo tanpa meminta izin ARBA.

Ini dia karut arnab untuk malam ini. Semoga gembira membaca. Njoi…..

Tru-Luv Truffles: Day 10 & Other stories

In conjunction with receiving my ARBA membership card, I have also got myself an apron for my future grooming session. I must say it was rather kinky to be wearing an apron with bears on it. How I wish they were rabbit prints. Maybe I should get a plain apron and print TLR logo on it. It would be cute!

Anyhow, here’s how I look like wearing it.

I didn’t want to join ARBA at first because I felt it was irrelevant since we do not have shows here and I am not an American Breeder. But I realized that I was breeding imports from America so I should be a member too. Furthermore, I could get more news about the ongoing in US and keep abreast with the latest information in the rabbit world.

So I am happy to be a member of both the HLRSC and ARBA now.
