Perseverance

Back then when I kept animals solely as pets, I couldn’t be bothered if they adhere to the standard or not. Things have since changed quite a bit in that area. I found myself guilty of comparing my rabbits with those of reknown rabbitries. Deep down in my heart, I just felt that it is not right but to produce good rabbits, it is inevitable.

So am I getting what I desire in my herd at the moment? To be honest, there are more to be done. I do not think I will sell out or anything but to persevere in breeding may be a question. As it is, all breedings that has taken place are planned and scheduled accordingly but I still feel that it is very taxing mentality. LOL…

Just praying hard for strength to persevere and be consistent in all that I do with the bunnies. Have a great day ahead!

We shall meet one day, Laurie Stroupe!

I did mention about my MENTOR leaving the hobby. I have always taken Laurie Stroupe as my mentor. I have never officially mentioned to her but I have always been bugging her with my questions and I believe she noticed it. LOL. She never fails to provide great advice. Her blog/website has helped inspired me to start off this great hobby.

And sadly, dreams of having her rabbits remains just as a DREAM. The Nature Trail’s herd is one of a kind and a league of their own.

Great rabbits coupled with friendly & generous breeder is the key to a perfect rabbitry. Laurie is one of the breeders I have always look up to.

Hope you have great successes in your venture and we shall meet one day!

Here’s her official statement:

To Tatt or Not To Tatt, that is the question

I am about to pass on offspring of my imported Holland Lops to fellow enthusiasts. They will of course come together with pedigrees and it wouldn’t be quite complete in my standards to pass on a pedigree without a form of identification to state that the rabbit is indeed what the pedigree states.

In order to have a form of identification, I would like to consider tattooing my rabbits as mentioned in the previous post. The most conventional way of tatooing is using the clamp version and this method is well known among breeders in US to cause rabbits to break their legs or worst, backs. It is a very risky procedure.

Than I came across this tattoo tool called RabitTatt by Glenna Hendrix. It seemed to be a great tattoo kit to have but I would need to lay down the facts and get my priorities right.

Let’s go back to the basic by asking the question, why breeders tattoo their rabbits?

Tattooing a rabbit is part of the Show requirements. Each registered rabbit must be legibly identified and tattoo is known to be the most commonly used.

Then, what is the significance for me to tattoo?

Personally I would love to track my rabbits and if they are being used as breeding stocks, at least I can trace the lineage back since the rabbits will always come with a pedigree. But we do not have shows to begin with and there is always a possibility that my rabbits may be cross bred with a different breed (Lord, I hope this never happens), would it be in vain if I tattoo them?

Most breeders in US rather not tattoo their rabbits for the same reason that there is a possibility that the rabbits may be injured in the process. But if you are dealing with exportation, a form of identification has got to be in place. Since I have no intention to export at the moment, I may not need to go through that process.

So my question to myself and you fellow readers is, if IDENTIFICATION that important?

Because the only reason for tattoo is for identification, Identification and IDENTIFICATION.

Noobie’s Babies: Charl & Mo

I just had to start off this post by laughing. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

When I came home this evening, I was relieved to find Noobie “chilling” at her usual favorite spot. I am pretty sure that she’s done delivering. I guess she is on the plump side thanks to my pampering. To be extra sure, I felt her stomach gently and found nothing unusual.

Then like a predator, my eyes went straight to the nest box. I knew one of the kits was a broken black (Skor junior). It was already very dark when I found it this morning. Noobie has taken great care of them and this is the reason why:

Meet Mo my replacement for Little Moo. LOL! Another Diary Cow. I better be specializing in Broken Black Hollands. My world is all about Black & White! LOL!!!!

This little fellow is plump and I am sure you cannot agree more. Turned out Noobie was busy nursing when I notice her going into the nest box more than usual. What a great mum!

Alright, what was all the laughing about? Here’s why:

Meet Charl ! A CHARLIE with a DE HOTOT twist. It is almost like a BLANC DE HOTOT with moustache. This is the first Charlie that I have ever seen. It is just so cute. My wife & I cannot stop laughing. Even our little 1 year old daughter started laughing as she was trying to follow us. Although it is not a desirable trait to have Charlies, we are just so tickled by this.

For all these I am giving Noobie these awards:

1) The best nursing doe

2) The best temperament & well behaved doe (I have never hear her growl at me, ever!)

As a conclusion, Skor & Noobie ROUND 1 is not that good of a combination. By right I should be getting 1/2 Broken, 1/4 Solid & 1/4 Charlie, in this litter it was 1/3 Broken, 2/3 Charlie. No sign of CHOCOLATES!

A blessing in disguise this is because it was not a litter of 6. I like the numbers in this litter and hope my future litters stay this size. No multiple breeding that is, just one take.

It is questionable if I will proceed going against the probability and odds to get a solid CHOC the next time. We’ll have to wait for Skor & Holly Hope combination next. But I am in dire need of a buck to continue on Skor’s legacy.

Now let us all laugh looking at Charlie Chaplin resurrected in the form of a HOLLAND LOP kit:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….

Noobie Kindled but…(UPDATED)

If you are a Holland Lop breeder, you will realize that this breed is about the “buts”. They always leave questions marks lingering on your mind. This is the very reason why they say it is a Hallmark breed and also the hardest to work with. I finally raise the white flag challenging this fact. Now I am a true believer that this is in fact a difficult breed.

Alright, here are the details and I will post photos later when I get home from work. Before I went to bed at 10.30 pm, I gently felt the kits in Noobie’s tummy and I realize that somehow they (the kicks from within) were lower than where I felt them previously. That gave me a feeling that they are moving into kindle position. I did not do an actual palpation of course because I have yet to master that skill (LOL!). I just place my palm gently on her lower abdomen to feel the little kicks. I then woke up at 3.30 am to find Noobie lining the nest box with fur. So I was assured that she will not have kits on the wire. Woke up at 6.30 am to find Noobie still looking big but out of the nest box with loose fur all around.

Then, I noticed something moving in the nest box! On closer inspection, I have 2 viable kits. 1 is a Broken Black for sure because its marking was really dark. The other I cannot quite make out which I think maybe broken chocolate or lilac.

To ensure I did not miss anyone, I had to reach out into the nest box and feel for any dead kit. I felt one big lifeless one and pulled it out. I believe this one is what they call a fetal giant. It was a fetal giant Charlie measuring a good 3 inches and it is abnormally big compared to all the kits I have seen. And it brought back sad memories of the first litter. It did look huge like those dead ones from Holly Hope’s litter.

So what are the question marks?

I know Noobie is a great doe with good motherly instinct but I have got a feeling that she is not quite done with kindling (just a gut feeling) because firstly, she still look a little “big” and secondly, she kept on going into the nest box. I do not think there are any stuck kits because there is no blood all around and she wasn’t crouching in the nest box. It does seemed like she is nursing the babies non-stop. Another reason that convinced me otherwise is that she only mated with Skor twice in 5 minutes and I should expect a rather small litter from her this time around. So the first question is whether we still have more kits coming?

The second question is whether Noobie will keep on throwing giants? I was expecting BlueBerry to throw giants because she is rather huge but Noobie is rather smaller.

I just want to finish up today quickly and get home ASAP.

Kits on NEWS…papers

Since I had to vacuum clean the cages yesterday and I did not want to scare the kits to death, I placed them in the playpen lined with newspaper (thus the title of my post).

They love to run and explore in the playpen.

Noobie’s Babies Update: No signs of kits yet

It is 2pm on a Sunday afternoon as I am writing. Noobie has yet to show signs of labor. I believe her nest is ready because I am able to see a crater at the end of the nest box.

I hope it would be in the evening or later tonight. If not, it “may” be another disastrous late delivery just like Holly Hope’s litter.

What’s next for me? : Tattoo

The next most important thing for a purebred bunny after the pedigree is tattoo. Although a rabbit do not need to be tattooed to prove that it is purebred, it is always good to have a form of identification so that it can be included as part of the pedigree. Without an identification, the rabbit can be easily replaced with another which may have similarity in its physical appearance.

The next thing that I would like to learn is how to tattoo a rabbit. I know it hurts them a little and for me, it is very important to identify my rabbits since they are the first generation out of imported specimens. At least I am able to trace my rabbits in a long run.

But first, I need to get myself a set of tattooing tools. A rabbit tattoo kit that is. We’ll see how it goes from here…

Noobie’s Tummie

Thought that would rhyme and I love rhymes especially coming out of my own brain.

Here’s a video to illustrate what I am trying to say here:

The Great Feast Days

Every other day, the bunnies in Meadow Haven will be given fresh vegetables. A big bowl full of chopped Bok Choy, Celery, Carrot & Chinese Parsley is the usual menu. I must say that they eat more fresh vegetables as compared to myself. I am not a fan of vegetables but I do have them as much as I can.
