Lemmings

One of my favourite computer games when I was younger was Lemmings. It is quite similar to the modern day Angry Bird puzzle game that many have came to be addicted to. Lemmings in real life are small rodents similar to hamsters and the mice. I am not sure why they were given such a “stupid” image in the game but it was definitely frustrating at times when they fall short of the instructions given by the player.

Taken from Google images

The objective of the game is to rescue the whole herd of lemmings from inevitable death by using different skill sets to escape the puzzle. This game only tells you one thing – A Good Leader (you) can save an entire herd of Lemmings from extinction.

I am sure by now you will somehow understand my point and where I am coming from. As of late, I cannot help but to notice how easy it is for new comers in the rabbit hobby to be mislead. To a point that I must state the obvious and when I do that, it puts me in a bad light. Unfair isn’t it?

Things I have noticed happening:-

1) Oops, made a mistake which buck we use as STUD for you (If you didn’t ask, we will never tell). Shit hits the fan when kits of unexpected colour starts appearing in the litter – this is really NO CLASS. THIS IS CHEATING

2) Hyping up one’s herd credibility through many unscrupulous means and selling pets for brood/show quality price. Taking advantage of people without knowledge. THIS IS CHEATING

3) Selling pregnant does without informing buyer (you never ask, we will never tell). THIS IS DISHONEST

4) Promising rabbits with GC Legs when they really do not. Even original pedigrees are sure to be lost in the mail (freaking lame excuse). THIS IS CHEATING

5) All the above are given MERITS and SUPPORTED! THIS IS LEMMING!

With so much loose ends, I start to wonder if these irresponsible seller/broker/breeder or whatever you call them, give you what you paid for. Somehow their actions make me doubt further. People like that are capable of anything. Promise you a rabbit through photo but in real life it is a different rabbit, giving you a fake pedigree and even a mixed breed rabbit does not seem impossible.

Everyone love the convenience and depends on hearsay. “I heard this line is good so it is expensive. Never mind, as long as good I can spend a lot”. And soon, one after another just like the lemmings, they follow suit to inevitable death. Every lines has got its different quality if you do not already know. If only you care to learn how to distinguish between them. That’s if you really care. The same thing applies to unscrupulous rabbit sellers and it is very easy to put them out of business – WHEN THE BUYING STOPS, THE CHEATING WILL TOO!

If telling the truth is unpopular (which has always been since the existence of mankind), what should or can be done? I guess nothing. So I’ll leave you to continue supporting/encouraging and being mislead. I have grown and am done playing the LEMMINGS game.

I must also point out that this rabbit thing to some is pretty important as it has become their source of income and having the need to survive, has turn to immoral approaches. Pity is one thing but how many can you take pity? I am happy to be able to write and express my opinions through my observation without a care for anything because really (and again), this is just a hobby for me and not life or death situation. For some it is TOP PRIORITY – one rabbit not sold would mean no food for a day (sad but true).

And the point of this post really is, I just wanted to wish all of you, HAPPY BEING CHEATED!

DOPE!

In The Studio We Go…

“Make sure you evaluate carefully before passing on your rabbits”

That’s what the production crew member told me before I left for home. Regrets, I have none. Tru-Luv Chiko went to the right family and I am happy that he is well taken care of. He has grown into a very handsome 4 months old!

So I received an email last week. A favour request from a media production house to loan one of Tru-Luv’s rabbits. As I always enjoy spending time in the studio environment, it was difficult to decline. But the problem really wasn’t with whether I can make it for the photo shoot but the problem was that they wanted a black rabbit in particular. My thoughts went to Chiko straight away and I was glad the his owner agreed to join me at the studio for a couple of hours.

I was given strict instructions not to share photographs that I have taken of the artiste until the launching so therefore, I am just sharing photos of Tru-Luv Chiko. He was a natural and I am so very proud of him! He is the best example of a rabbit that is used to handling and very well taken care of.  My heart is joyful.

Tru-Luv Chiko a CPG Pro Optimum boy, his fur shines!

Chiko above and Carmel his great grandmother is next to Haley underneath him

Chiko @ 4 months!

Anxiously waiting for action while photographers set up

Are we ready for Lights, Camera & Action?

Goodbye Black-Letterhead, Hello Pilcrow!

Do you like the new theme? I absolutely LOVE IT!

For the past couple of years, I have been using the Blak-Letterhead theme by Ulysses Ronquillo. It is always difficult to choose an appealing and suitable theme for a rabbit weblog because I am very particular on how slick it looks. And with the large number of themes available to choose from, it made it even harder for me to decide on the best.

As I browsed through and previewing the themes randomly, I stumbled across this latest theme called Pilcrow by Automattic. I fell in love instantly. What I like most about this theme is that, it retains a banner and on top of that, we have the menu above the banner. I believe with the Black-Letterhead theme, new visitors get kinda lost browsing for information. With the main menu on top, the Info Center will be hard to miss with this new theme.

On a happy note, TinyCritterz.com has replenished stocks and a few new products has been added. Besides that, an old product has made a comeback with new packaging, I am talking about Rabbit Nutri-Drops – now available in 30 ml and 240 ml. Kritter’s Crumbles (click here for brochure) is the new bedding material all rabbit owners must try. It is available on-line exclusively on TinyCritterz.com. It is the latest fastest moving product!

While you are shopping over at TinyCritterz.com please remember to stock up on the TinyCritterz’ Timothy Hay, Versele-Laga Cuni Complete, Cuni PRO and Cuni Nature!

Thank you all for your immense support! Made it all worthwhile sharing information and providing the shopping experience at the same time!

Happy Shopping!

All That Your Rabbit Needs

click me – PURCHASE KRITTER’S CRUMBLES TODAY – click me

I am sure that most of you TLR readers and followers would agree that for the past 5 years of blogging, I have always recommended products that are good for your rabbit(s). Since day 1 of blogging, I have shared every moment of my life raising Holland Lops and this blog would not have existed if I have not realized how important information sharing was and still is. Thus, I have recommended these products because I use them personally for my rabbits and have found that they are very suitable for them (the rabbits). Most of you would have also noticed that there were changes throughout the years.

The reason is very simple and it is due to nothing other than finding ways to improve the lives of my rabbits. For example, I am not a fan of switching feed because we all know that our rabbits have very sensitive stomach and switching feed may cause upset sometimes. It takes a lot of convincing on the ingredients and a lot of trial before I even use these products for rabbits, let alone recommend them. Another reason was the availability of products in the market. As the knowledge of manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and rabbit owners increase, so will the number of good products in the market.

And so, after 5 years, I have found the following combination the best to maintain and upkeep my rabbits. For economical and financial reasons, I am going to break things down so that you will know much little you spend on good stuff for your beloved rabbits.

Versele-Laga Cuni Complete provides fibrous content, retails at RM 18

Versele-Laga Cuni PRO for dental health, retails at RM 18

Versele-Laga Cuni Nature (Senior) which conditions, retails at RM 20

Versele-Laga Cuni (Junior) Nature conditions the young ones, retails at RM 20

TinyCritterz 1kg Timothy Hay-In-Box acts as roughage and promotes stomach motility

Honestly, these are all your rabbit(s) need(s) for a month to stay healthy and happy! And let’s do some calculations shall we?

1. Versele-Laga Cuni Complete 500 g – RM 18

2. Versele-Laga Cuni PRO 1 kg – RM 18

3. Versele-Laga Cuni Nature or Junior Nature 750 g – RM 20

4. TinyCritterz Timothy Hay-In-Box 1kg – RM 15

TOTAL ======================> RM 71/ 1.5 month

When mixed together and given 1/3 cup per day, these feed can last for more than 45 days but let’s take 45 days as a benchmark. That’s RM 2.20 PER DAY PER RABBIT!

And for litter bedding, please refer to this post – https://truluvrabbitry.com/2011/08/01/kritterskittys-crumble/

Litter bedding could be as low as RM 0.80 / week and that’s RM 0.20 per day rounded up.

Add the RM 0.20 litter bedding cost into RM 2.20 for feed, that’s only RM 2.40 per day per rabbit!

I am sure all of us can save a burger or 2 per week to provide our little bunnies the best they deserve.

All these products can be purchased online at http://www.TinyCritterz.com

Thank you all for your unending support!

A little something about Fuzzy Holland Lops

I know many are surprised to see a Fuzzy Holland Lop produced at Tru-Luv Rabbitry. As this is totally expected and not uncommon, I am sure some were taken aback and perhaps started doubting the purity of my Holland Lops. I believe Laurie Stroupe of The Nature Trail has written a very good article about the Fuzzy gene in Holland Lops – http://www.thenaturetrail.com/Holland-Lop-Fuzzy-Fur.htm.

Fuzztort the fuzzy HL!

Fluffy!

I really do hope that Fuzztort will be able to help someone here in Malaysia who is or interested in working with the American Fuzzy Lop (AFL) breed. As mentioned in Laurie’s article, though a Fuzzy Holland Lop can be shown as AFL, it should not be taken as a real AFL until a rabbit has 3 generations of AFL in its pedigree.

Fuzztort comes with a “Holland Lop” pedigree but is marked as a FUZZY HOLLAND LOP.

If you are interested in a Fuzzy Holland Lop as a pet or you think that Fuzztort can help you with your AFL development, please feel free to get in touch with me via email (truluvrabbitry@gmail.com).

Kritter’s/Kitty’s Crumble

Kritter's Crumbles Coarse & Fine

Here’s another amazing bedding product I would like to recommend to all rabbit owners. By far the best in odour control I must say. Just take a look at the video below:

I know most of you are very supportive of “GO GREEN” and therefore, I believe Kritter’s/Kitty’s Crumble will best suit your “GO GREEN” crusade.

More information here – http://www.kritterscrumble.com/faqs.php

LOW CARBON FOOTPRINT!

Highly absorbent, biodegradable and amazing unbeatable odour elimination = PERFECT !

Usage:

KITTY’S CRUMBLE 9L (1.8KG / 4 LBS) retails at RM 25 and based on my own experience is able to fill 32 triangular litter boxes (pictured).

32 times of this litter box

Let’s say if you need to clean the litter box 2 times a week, a bag of 9 Liters Kitty’s Crumble can last you for 16 weeks. That is approximately 3.5 months for 1 rabbit?

I like to stretch it a little. Let’s say you feed your rabbit a good rabbit food with Yucca Extract and its odor is less offensive, perhaps you only need to change the litter tray once a week. This means that a bag of 9 Liters Kitty’s Crumble can last you for 32 weeks!

RM 25 / 32 = RM 0.78 per week!

RM 0.80 per week is dirt cheap! And by the way, it is dirt after all!

This is totally amazing!

The Danger Of Using Stud Services

Not too long ago, I got to know a Show Dog breeder. One fine day, he told me his dog has some sort of Sexual Transmitted Disease (STD). I asked him why or if his dog lead a promiscuous life. He then told me that his dog is a grand champion and every bitch in town wants a piece of him.

And not too long ago, I received an email asking if I provided stud service. I said, “NO WAY, HELL NO I DON’T”. I know I produce very beautiful kids but that is totally out of the question. If I don’t do stud service, don’t expect my rabbits to do it. NO, my rabbit DO NOT PROVIDE stud service. For many reasons:

1. Diseases

I can’t imagine having a buck slowly dying of AIDS like symptoms. There are sexually transmitted diseases in rabbits and one of them is Vent Disease. This disease not only spread through sexual contact but it also causes infertility.

2. I am selfish

I love to keep all the beautiful genes to myself and only people who are genuine to improve the breed. So yes, guilty of being selfish.

3. My reputation/ego is at stake

You will not know if 2 rabbits will produce super bunnies and to safe myself from explaining to my “in-laws” that the breeding did not work out, I rather not overwork my poor bucks. Also, I do not want to be associated to breeders who later uses my reputation and good lines for all the wrong reasons – MONEY!

If someone puts a gun to my head and forces me to allow my beautiful buck to “enjoy” their doe, I can only agree with a smile and find the ugliest buck I have to deliver the service. The point remains the same, I will never ever allow my bucks to provide stud service.  So for those of you who still believe in Stud Service, I urge you to think about the above points that I have stated. Not just thinking about yourself but put yourself in the shoes of the STUD master and ask the following questions:

1. Will he/she really/sincerely allow their BEST buck to be bred with yours?

2. Have you consider about your rabbit contacting STDs? Even if your doe is clean, the buck may not.

3. Are you absolutely sure the deed has been done by the right buck?

I guess we all won’t know until the SHIT hits the fan.

And if you are still “degil”/stubborn and wants to use Stud Service, here are some pointers to help you out:

1. Both parties must agree to a term.

2. Both check through the pedigree and tattoo number to ensure both are the correct rabbits.

3. Bring the doe to the stud and witness the “action”. Both parties must be present.

4. Execute as agreed (in the term) either payment in cash or stud to pick a kit.

5. If it is an unsuccessful mating, some stud provides guarantees (kahwin sampai dapat – poor buck!)
