We’re Going Ultra!
I am sure most of you know who is Ultraman and if you do not know who or what is Ultraman, please get up to speed by reading about this super hero – here. There are many variances of Ultraman from Ultraman Taro to Ultraman Gaia. Yes, there is a huge Ultraman family if you have been following. Though many different Ultraman, every series that appear only have one thing in common, the BEEP! Most of the Ultraman have a little light on his/her chest. The episode always and usually starts with a monster attacking the city and Ultraman will soon come to the rescue. What cannon cannot kill, Ultraman can by just playing karate! Sometimes, Ultraman loses his energy and the light on the chest would blink and BEEP! as a sign of weakness. The fight will always end up with Ultraman summoning all his energy for a finishing move either through a Spacium Ray or an Ultra Slash!
I am sure that brings back a lot of childhood memories but there are two folds as to what I would like to write about today. Firstly, I would like to focus on the word Ultra which I believe denotes the highest level of goodness. Before I elaborate more on the word Ultra, please allow me to digress. We are indeed in the BEEP! situation as far as the varieties of good rabbit food is concerned. Therefore, we summoned all our energy and effort in bringing only the BEST OF THE BEST into Malaysia. I personally is fed up firstly with inconsistent stocks and most disgustingly, those that does not have the least passion for our pet rabbits. The outcome – brands that appear and disappear on the shelves like Chipsmore cookies and people who deny our rabbits of their rightful basic needs.
Tru-Luv Rabbitry’s long presence clearly shows that I (or we) are dead serious about the welfare of our rabbits. I am committed to my rabbits by providing them only the best. We know that there are many brands of rabbit food in the market and often find ourselves asking the question – WHICH ONE TO BUY?
I understand that not everyone bothers to go through the ingredients and know exactly what the rabbit food is made of but instead depend very much on word of mouth and “recommendations”. Since ingredients and scientific facts are not our forte, I would like to just distinguish and categorize to make things simple. I believe the scientific facts will be laid down in due time.
Pet Owner or Breeder?
Pet owners love their pets to bit and pieces and always want the best for their furry buddies. The number of animals kept are less than 5 at a time and most of the time, the BEST is well affordable.
Breeders in Malaysia have anywhere from 20 to 300 (farm) animals at a time and that will bring us to the next question.
Commercial or Pet Market?
I can only give the commercial the following formula:-
Low Investment = High Profit
or
Minimum Input = Maximum Output
Let me share with you my observation at the moment and see if it makes sense to you. Most of the rabbit food available in the market at the moment is formulated for the purpose of meeting merely what the rabbit needs so that it can survive to reproduce more. Most of these are used for meat and they do not need to live for a long time as they are slaughtered after reaching a certain age. Therefore, farmers could not care less what are the ingredients used to produce these rabbit food. Some may even include additives so that the rabbits gobble up as much as they can just to gain enough weight to be slaughtered.
On the other hand, rabbit food specially formulated for pets not only provide nutritional needs but enhances the lives of our beloved pets so that they live a long and healthy life. If having a healthy rabbit living a long life is not what you intend to have, then I am not sure why you are keeping a pet to begin with. Therefore, I assume all of us are pet lovers and want the best for our pets. Although the price maybe a little steep, we need to take a step back and understand the reason behind it. Certain rabbit food maybe a little higher in price but the AMOUNT TO FEED is lesser than other rabbit food. In the long run rabbit owners save more! Also, we have to take into consideration the QUALITY of the ingredients used to prepare the rabbit food.
What I find disturbing at the moment is that, the prices of commercial rabbit food formulated for farm animals are selling at a higher price compared to rabbit food formulated for pets!
In the next few days, an ULTRA PREMIUM rabbit food will be unleashed and to be honest, all Tru-Luv rabbits has been anxiously waiting for this after having a couple of months of sample supplies.

Isn’t She Lovely?
Just spent some time grooming the little fuzzies and took picture of them for their new owner. Bliss is really cute at this stage and it’s a pity that I do not have the time for grooming else I’ll keep a couple of fuzzies as pets. Their coat needs to be brush often to avoid mats which can be bad for their skin. Bliss enjoys her little grooming sessions and after the grooming session, she will look like a little puffed up hairball – so cute!

I have written about Pet Epicure in the past but when it comes to this cosy little pet boutique (actually more than that), I have so much to write about it but just do not know where to start. Perniagaan Jumbo has been around for almost 30 years. Nestled in the middle of the Kelana Jaya housing area, this friendly pet shop is famous among pet lovers in the surrounding neighborhood. This is the pet shop that I first learned about Hamsters 24 years ago (when I was only 7 years old). Being an animal lover, I spent most of my weekends coming to this shop and sometimes assisting in its daily operations just for fun. I always find pleasure in chatting with both Uncle Cheah & his wife. Since three years ago, the business has been passed on and now operated by close relatives and Perniagaan Jumbo is as welcoming as before. I am always happy spending time in this pet shop and each visit will last more than an hour. It brings back a lot of wonderful childhood memories. Back then, Kelana Jaya has not been so developed and we did not even have the Giant Hypermarket. Through the years, Perniagaan Jumbo stands the test of time and has earned a place in the hearts of those in the neighbourhood. I am so happy that Mr. Cheah agreed to carry TinyCritterz’ 1kg Timothy Hay at his shop so that it is easily accessible to all rabbit lovers in the neighbourhood. Whatever you call it, good things will come our way one fine day. So the rabbit show season has started all around the USA as Spring starts to emerge. Spring and Winter are 2 seasons that I would love to experience in this lifetime but that is besides the point of this post. After so many years of following the show circuit, I realized many things and if I am ever in the position to advice newbies in the hobby, there are a couple of key points that I would like to put across. And they are:
1. Identify the STYLE that you LIKE
I have written this before and I am sure you might have noticed that every successful rabbit breeder regardless of the breed he/she works with, have a distinctive style to call their own. Take Holland Lop breeders for instance, some place more emphasis on the crown and others on massive head. Just the same as our taste for certain food, everyone has different preferences. Same goes with rabbits. If you find yourself drawn to a particular trait and although you do not see breeders working on that trait winning all the time, take heart and be bold to work with that trait. You shall never know that one day, a judge may notice it.
2. Work with a breeder you BELIEVE IN
It is indeed a competition and we all know at any given day, given rabbit and given judge, someone may reign as the winner. Some keep on winning because of consistency in quality, no doubt in that. But there will come a point in time, another breeder may get lucky to produce a worthy winner. We are all playing a game of chance here and to a certain extent that we are playing God breeding these rabbits, we cannot accurately predict genetics and thus, at the right time, a champ will emerge in the barn and glory is upon us! Really, work with a breeder that you BELIEVE IN and he/she do not necessarily be a consistent winner. The glorious day will come!
3. Be Patient!
There is no shortcuts in life and nothing comes easy. Yes, you can buy winning stocks to start but of course you need to pay hefty prices for them. But also bearing in mind that expensive does not always equates to quality. The point really is be patient. Good things come to those who wait. I believe this is a point that has been mentioned far too many times. Patience is indeed a virtue!

Say What?
It is always nice to keep in touch with Tru-Luv rabbit owners. Every once in a while I receive very encouraging and happy messages from my buyers and adopters. I recently received one that brightens up my day and it reads:
“Baby is a joy!! We brag about her to anyone who would listen!! She’s a diva, picky about her fresh vege and has attitude but at the same time, she is perfectly toilet trained! Would come on command, would play n would snuggle with her head on my lap… Etc etc. Friends n family are amazed by her puppy likeness! Keep in touch!”
This is not the first time that I am told that a Tru-Luv rabbit is like a puppy. I was told by a few others that their Tru-Luv bunny will jump up the bed and snuggle up for the night. A Lot Of Cleaning Up To Do
I can really see how much damage and good the year of the Rabbit has done in the local level. The good is that many has come to know and love this wonderful animal. At the same time, the damages are aplenty. I shall not divulge in the negativity but trust me, we really have a lot of cleaning to do after this aftermath. The good thing is that, there are many good breeders out there who knows what they are doing or at least knows how to seek proper advice.
I really like knowing newcomers who are eager to learn and at the same time have a mind of their own. They have good logic and sometimes would ponder and ask very reasonable questions about the hobby. Unfortunately, not many are like that. The problem really lies in how one is resourceful. I really cannot blame most of them because how most our lives has been “manufactured” and “prepacked”. We are so used to fast food and anything in between that is instant. We prefer conveniences to a point that a robot that feeds us would be a hit in the gadget departmental store.
Due to our lack of knowledge, we tend to follow the majority. Like many of us “foodies” (those who hunt for good food), the best indicator for a good restaurant is the one with the most patrons. But in this hobby, it is a very wrong perception. Don’t flies hang around the smelliest poop? Not knowing does not give us the reason to be ignorant. When you do not know, you tend to get more opinion and I do not mean that you should not but you must be able to reason on all the opinions gathered and make your own conclusion. In short, WE MUST NOT FOLLOW BLINDLY.
It is very easy to fall into the trap of Character Assassination. The real question is, have you deal with me before? Have you ever thought and reason why people spread those rumors about someone else in the hobby? Why not approached the person in question to clarify? There is indeed a reason for everything.
What I have learned in this hobby is that, like anything else in this world, there tend to be conflicts, jealousy and discontentment. There are many things other breeders do that I may not agree one of which I hate the most are dishonest breeders. These are the breeders that can easily fool you when you are not equipped with proper knowledge and sad to say, they are thriving.
I guess, you will only believe when it happens to you first hand and I will still be glad to help you pick up the pieces to move ahead.
On a happier note, the mother of all Rabbit Show is coming up. The 2011 ARBA Convention at Indianapolis! I just cannot wait to see the outcome of this amazing show with thousands of rabbits under 1 roof racing towards Best In Show!
