A Bunnyman’s Dream Do Come True

A taste of what's coming soon - photo courtesy of Julie

Around this time last year, I met a special person online. It was also the time of the 2010 ARBA Convention where a Holland Lop won BIS in the Open Show. The special person planted the idea that I should make a special visit to ARBA Convention. And as some of you might know and did follow my quest, I also attempted in the DiGi Youth – Free Your Ideas contest to win some funds but it was unsuccessful.

Little did I know, this little idea soon took a gigantic twist when my special friend started a Facebook group in hope to raise funds to make this idea and dream a reality. Some took the Facebook group as hard begging on my part but the immense support proved that I was LUVED! It feels like my dream has already come true being at the receiving end of such generosity and immense support. Some donated financially while others provided their moral support. I truly appreciate the support no matter what form, shape and sizes they come in.

The funds soon started pouring in from rabbit friends all around the USA. Soon more fund raising ideas were suggested and one in particular was to put a Holland Lop painting by my dad as an auction item. The auction went really well and in total, USD 1108 were raised for my air ticket to Indianapolis! Although, the amount did not cover the entire cost of my flight ticket, it was a mighty BIG help. And the shortage motivated me to work my butt off to save up more money for my DREAM TRIP. And that is the reason why you might have noticed that I have been inactive as far as blog updates is concerned.

For next few days, I will try to update my blog with photos from the 2011 ARBA Convention in Indianapolis. To date, over 23,000 rabbits has been entered in what is known as the MOTHER of all Rabbit Shows of the year.

I ask for your prayers for a safe trip and all of you fellow Malaysian bunny friends will be in my thoughts. I hope my trip will help me increase my knowledge in this hobby so that I can share with all of you.

I do not know what to expect for now but all I know is that, the average Joe in me will have a life long dream fulfilled in just a couple of days away. This is very exciting indeed and I cannot wait to meet all my friends in person. I also look forward to meeting new friends in this journey.

As I make my pilgrimage to the land of Milk & Honey, a place where I do not need to explain why I love rabbits, I would like to again share this video that I have put together in dedication to all my supportive friends in the hobby. Watching the video again, I cannot help but to feel moved and emotional. WHAT A JOURNEY IT HAS BEEN!!!

Thank you all very much for all the immense support! God bless you!

What Can Your Children Learn

As we all know, there are now 2 sides to this rabbit hobby namely Just For Pets and Rabbit Showing. For the adults or in the OPEN it can be extremely competitive among serious breeders and it got me thinking what will the youth or young children learn from this wonderful hobby. Here’s my take on this topic:

Sense of responsibility

Having pet rabbits as a hobby does teach our children to be responsible for another living being. It also teaches them discipline as their pets must be watered and fed on a fixed routine. They have the opportunity to watch and learn the life cycle of a pet from young till death. There are many things that they will learn from keeping a pet healthy at all time.

Social skills

When they get into the Rabbit Showing sport, they will be introduced to other children their and also with the same hobby. They will learn how to socialize and at times learn how to be tactful in handling emotions of other children. As children always learn from their elders, we just have to be careful and to ensure they do not get entangled in the adult world. When they are good at honing social skills, that will help them handle human interaction issues better.

To be honest, having pet rabbits on its own is far more less damaging than having children in the showing sports. Introducing them to the showing sports would mean introducing dynamics and complexity into the hobby for them. Yes, he or she may not be in the run to win it but it does not mean someone he or she knows isn’t as well. And it all really depends on how much you want to protect your children.

The reason why I am writing this is because, I was able to see for myself the heartache in a child when he/she did not do well with his/her rabbit. The disappointment that shows on the face really tears my heart and that is something I will definitely not forget the next time I ever organize any rabbit competition.

The show arena is definitely somewhere to toughen up your kids!

What Happen to the Points?

Let’s start off with the question – WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE(S) OF A RABBIT SHOW?

Answer: CONFORMATION

The reason why rabbits entered in show must not be neutered, is because, sound specimens must be reproduced. The conformation show emphasizes and even amplifies this fact. A show indirectly promotes the breeding of the best animals and therefore, a rabbit that is disqualified (DQ) must be made known so that the breeder will not be lead to believe that it is alright to breed his/her rabbit. The saying, “be cruel to be kind” holds true here. In my opinion, a judge should be extremely honest though it may make them unpopular. If a judge is really for the betterment of the breed(s), being popular should be the last thing on his/her mind.

The main objective of a rabbit show or any sort of shows e.g. dog & cat is none other than CONFORMATION to the STANDARD OF PERFECTION. I am sure most of us have the Standard Of Perfection booklet by now and let’s take a look at the latest Standard Of Perfection for the Holland Lop breed. Each breed comes together with its schedule of points:

General Type….84 Body
Head
Ears
Crown
Feet,Legs,Bone
32
24
10
8
10
Fur……………..7
Color & Markings….4
Condition………..5
TOTAL POINTS….100

And now let’s look at a typical ARBA show result slip:

Another question, where are the points?

I am not saying that this is the practice by only certain judge but I believe this is a common practice in any ARBA show at the moment (please correct me if I am wrong). I am also not sure if the point system has ever been used. Please bear in mind that I am not trying to challenge the integrity or worthiness of judges here but I believe by just stating one’s opinion is not justifiable in selecting the best rabbit. If the win is not justifiable, it makes no difference of just organizing a rabbit beauty pageant where no merits are given to adherence to standards.

The point system would satisfy nay-sayers like me when it comes to justifying a winning rabbit. The only reason I can think of why the point system has since be obsolete is because of time constraints. But I also believe that there is a reason why we have RAMRODS (writers). Instead of standing around looking pretty and writing a few lines on each result slip, the job of the ramrod should also include calculating the points for each rabbit. But do we risk jeopardizing the quality of rabbits in exchange for convenience? How can a judge possibly have a number crunching brain capable of storing the scores for hundreds of rabbits that he/she touches and feel? Even if he/she have the super natural power, let’s try to think of an instance where there are 2 very identical rabbits.

If rabbit A has the same crown as rabbit B, under the point system, both should have the same points! And if that is written down and tabulated, it will give a clearer justification where one of the rabbit loses out. It just doesn’t make sense to me to hear the judge telling his writer, “This is a fine representation of the breed, such an amazing doe” but the rabbit gets the 1st place from bottom up – LAST so to speak!

I am sure by now, you get the point that I am trying to put forth and I wonder if there is any plans of re-enforcing the point system judging which promotes better transparency and leave no room for “favouritism”. Or is it?

I feel that it defeats the purpose of having the Standard Of Perfection schedule of points if the points are not being used during judging.

I was once told that if the judge wants you to lose, he/she will ensure you lose. I wonder what other ways we can help improve the system so to promote real “CONFORMATION” for the betterment of the breed rather than the relationships. If a relationship can’t last beyond winning or losing, it is a relationship not worth having!

Just my 2 cents worth.

Why so complicated when they are not?

================================================================

Apakah objective mengadakan pertandingan arnab?

Tiada jawapan lain kecuali PENGESAHAN.

General Type….84 Body
Head
Ears
Crown
Feet,Legs,Bone
32
24
10
8
10
Fur……………..7
Color & Markings….4
Condition………..5
TOTAL POINTS….100

Apa kata kita lihat slip keputusan pertanding arnab pula:

Dimana pergi markahnya?

Kalau tidak, apa gunanya Standard of Perfection kan?

ARBA Official Show Rules

I realized that many show rabbit enthusiasts are still oblivious about the existence of the ARBA Official Show Rules. It can be obtained on ARBA.net under the Forms section and here’s the link I want to share – http://arba.net/PDFs/2009%20Show%20Rules.pdf

I am particularly drawn to the JUDGES & JUDGING Section and especially Section 55 which says:

“No judge shall exhibit in any breed, which they are judging. They shall refuse to consider any specimen they recognize as having been owned by them within three (3) months previous to the show. Also, they shall refuse to consider any specimens that were housed on their premises within three (3) months previous to the show.”

Laymon’s Kindness

I remember very clearly that one of the hardest questions asked during one of my past interviews is, “What is the most memorable moments in this hobby?” It was a difficult question for me because there has been too many unforgettable moments that I find it hard to pick a favourite. I am the kind of person that cherishes all the sentimental values in life and I like to find the meaning in life.

The beautiful Laymon's Kindness

Every rabbit has a story to tell. That’s if you are familiar with their behaviour and habits or care enough to know. A couple of weeks before the Ohio HLRSC Nationals, Robin asked me if I have a name for the doe that she and Josh was sending over to me. It wasn’t difficult to give a name to this beautiful doe (who I later found out already have 2 GC Legs). Josh and Robin has been really kind to offer me this magnificent doe and the word KINDNESS stuck! And therefore, the name Laymon’s Kindness and how appropriate.

Kindness came to Tru-Luv Rabbitry in perfect condition and when I opened up the folder with her pedigree, it came along with 2 “blue slips” (GC Legs) and what a pleasant surprise it was! It didn’t cross my mind to show Kindness because we are expecting a litter from her and thought she would be off condition raising her kits.

And then I found out that Tru-Luv Symphony was pregnant. We had previously entered Symphony for the show and due to that reason, there is an empty slot for Broken Senior Doe on my show string.

Then the strangest thing happened. Two days before her actual due date, I woke up in the morning to find a little blob on the floor and on further investigation, I found another blob near the first one – KITS! Still a little damp and chilled, they were alive! I quickly warm them up and coincidentally our good friends over at Golden Pines Rabbitry has got a litter earlier that morning as well. Kindness did not pull a single strand of fur nor did she make a nest for her babies so I decided to foster the 2 cuties to Golden Pines Rabbitry.

The 2 cuties...

What surprised me was that Kindness was still in PERFECT condition since she did not make a nest for her babies and that was when the idea of letting her take up Symphony’s slot came about. Somehow it was as though she has been eavesdropping on the news of the ARBA Sanctioned Shows and did not want to miss it.

She hold up her condition very well for a week and off we went to the show. Our hearts pounded as she climbed the “ladder” at the show and finally took Best Opposite Sex of Breed for Show A. Overall #2 Holland Lop in lay man terms.

And the best part is, remember she already had 2 legs? Adding one more GC Leg for this show would mean? She can now obtain her Grand Champion certificate. And soon she will be known as G.C. Laymon’s Kindness. For now it would be G.C. pending. 🙂

This is no individual effort and the credit is not mine. I really want to congratulate Josh & Robin for Kindness’ success. They have produced an extremely gorgeous doe and was generous enough to share her with me. Their kindness knows no bounds.

Once again, thank you very much Josh & Robin Laymon for your Kindness (pun intended).

Isn't she lovely?

Not forgetting, Tru-Luv Sibylla waited for me to return home from the show before kindling right in front of my eyes – literally.

Another cutie pie in the making....

Good Show!

We all had so much fun. That’s one of the things that I can say about the 1st and 2nd ARBA Open All Breed Rabbit Show that was held in conjunction with the Pet World Malaysia 2011 event. Kudos to the group of breeders and enthusiasts collectively known as Malaysia Rabbit Club for making this event such a success. And it was a pleasure having Mr. Randy and Mr. Allen to judge for us. Congratulations to all winners!

I am glad to have participated together with a group of friends and we are so happy to meet new friends both locally and also from overseas.

The BIS for both shows went to an awesome Holland Lop!

There were 128 rabbits in total and here’s the breakdown:

Netherland Dwarfs – 33

Holland Lops – 57

Dwarf Hotot – 4

Mini Rex – 6

Jersey Woolly – 3

Non-pedigree Local Breed – 25

I am glad that my Holland Lops did pretty well and I am really contented with all the placing my rabbits obtained. Let’s look at some photos shall we?

The break down of each Holland Lop Class is:

Solid:

1. Solid Senior Buck – 18 rabbits

2. Solid Senior Doe – 7 rabbits

3. Solid Junior Buck – 4 rabbits

4. Solid Junior Doe – 3 rabbits

5. Broken Senior Buck – 8

6. Broken Senior Doe – 8

7. Broken Junior Buck – 4

8. Broken Junior Doe – 5

Kindness. What a pleasant surprise from her. I decided on a last minute switch for her to replace Symphony proved to be a good move. Picked Best of Variety and moved on to be Best Opposite Sex of Breed for Show A under Randy Shumaker. There were 7 rabbit in the Broken Senior Doe variety. In Show B, she took 2nd of her class out of 8 rabbits.

Faith was picked for BOSV for both shows. She took #1 out of 9 rabbits in her class.

Izzie entered into the Solid Junior Doe variety and got #2 out of 3 rabbits in Show A and #1 SJD in Show B.

Roscoe took 3/4 for Show A and 2/4 for Show B

Carmel took 4/7 in Show A and 5/8 on Show B.

Haley was 5/7 in Show A and 3/8 in Show B.

Puffin was 3/3 in Show A and 2/3 in Show B.

I can't remember how Trudle did but it was a good placing for a home grown competing with all the imports.

Balian was 9/18 for Show A and 7/13 for Show B.

Thunder got 5/18 for Show A and 4/13 for Show B.

Besides from meeting and hanging out with local bunny friends, I also had the opportunity to meet our friends from Indonesia. Such honour to have them attend rabbit shows held here in Malaysia. Here are some of the memorable photos that I have taken throughout the show.

Ribbons up for grabs!

Asia Rabbit Show Fever

There will be rabbit shows held in Japan, Malaysia and Thailand over this weekend. This is the indication that ARBA Rabbit Show Fever has hit the Asia Region big time!

This weekend will be the 1st time that ARBA Rabbit Show will be held in Malaysia. ARBA has a stronghold in Japan for quite some time now and Thailand is the 2nd country in the region to hold ARBA Sanctioned shows. Malaysia is now the 3rd country to follow.

I can’t wait to meet all my friends this Saturday. It is going to be such a wonderful event and I am excited to watch and participate.

Let the fun begin!
