Phases Of Lives

I recently asked a very dear friend that have been raising rabbits for more than 10 years now what actually kept her in the hobby for so long. Her answer was a simple, “I just love it”. I guess it is really hard to explain the reason why someone pick up a hobby and get stuck with it forever.

I then took a step backward and did some thinking. I have had many pets throughout my life thus far. I couldn’t remember any particular point of my life that I did not have any pets around me. But then I wonder what is the “pattern” like for most of us.

There are a few phases of life that I recall through my observation. It is sort of like a vicious cycle that is difficult to break.

Most people start of having pets as children. As a child, some parents are gracious enough to think that having a pet will teach their beloved son or daughter the character of love. Or so they thought. Most of the children that get their first pet out of this basically run out of patience and give up their pets for good. Parents always end up taking over and soon, give up too! Poor animals off to the shelters.

Alright, let’s say mommy and daddy’s plan worked out superb and the kid get stuck with the pet. The child soon outgrow the pet and then came the juncture where everyone will never miss in pet raising – death of a pet. And right after, little kiddo misses little bunny and so off to the pet shop again to have another pick.

Then puberty hits and high school proms seemed much more interesting then little fur ball. So less time spent with little fluffy. Off so off to college little kiddo went and with that comes graduation, dating, full time job and marriage. All these with the absence of a pet.

The kids soon started popping…

Wait a minute! What happen to little bunny or little fluffy before all the dramas begin? Well, mommy and daddy took over and got hooked on to the hobby since now that they are retired and with loads of money to raise lotsa rabbits.

Alright, back to little kiddo. So the kids came and like his/her parent wanted so much to nurture his/her children the character of love, they got a pet, ONCE AGAIN…

Isn’t that all so familiar?

I sometimes think that having a hobby reflects how we are in our faith. A friend of mine did tell me once that those who are active in church activities are those below college going age and above retirement age. How interesting I thought. What happens to our faith in between that phase of our lives? What happens to our little furry friend in between that phase of our lives?

Are they not important to us anymore?

I hope and pray that all of you have a bunny when you are in kindergarten, have a bunny in elementary school, have a bunny in high school, have a bunny in college, have a bunny in the university, have a bunny while you’re dating, have a bunny when you propose or being proposed to, have a bunny when you hold your first baby, have a bunny when you hold your 2nd baby, have a bunny when you hold your 3rd baby, and I think enough of babies for now, have a bunny when your first baby say his/her first word, have a bunny when he/she take the first step, and please forget about all mother goose taboos of having pets are not healthy for baby in the womb, have a bunny when you hold your 4th baby (look who is breeding like bunnies!), have a bunny when you get a job (isn’t that suppose to be before the babies?), have a bunny when you move into your house (where the heck are you living with the kids and bunny before that!?), have a bunny when you walk your daughter down the aisle, have a bunny when your youngest leave home, have a bunny when you retire, have a bunny when you start losing your hair, have a bunny when you and your spouse grow old and grey and perhaps have a bunny with you in the grave.

Not too sure how many bunnies you’ll have in a lifetime, I am glad I still do have my bunnies right next to me! Please don’t forget that particular Marley in our lives.

Don’t forget to MROC coz you need a few bunny friends too!

God sends Angels Into Our Lives!

I was messing around with the camera today. Always wanted to capture some angelic moments at home but unfortunately do not have a DLSR to work with. And while I was at it, I added Carmel as part of the photo prop and it was just natural watching Beth hugging this beautiful bunny.

She's always happy to have a bunny around...

Seven Bunnies A Week

I am down to 7 bunnies and will be down to 6 rabbits at the end of September. That is because Muffet will be going to spend her entire life with Truffles.

With 7 bunnies it is so much easier to rotate them in the bunny run. A run a day keeps the problems away! I used to rotate 2 bunnies every evening to have  run in the play pen but now with just 7, I’ll be able to let each one have more time in the playpen. And when the figure goes down to 6, then I’ll have an off day. LOL!

Tonight it is Carmel’s turn to have a run!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Patience is a virtue?

Twenty to Thirty years – that is how long it took some of the best breeders in US to achieve their objective of producing top lops. Where am I? 3 years. Not even half way there. Will I be able to sustain for another 7 years at least? Probably provided that I am successful in getting what I have now bred. My numbers are decreasing. 3 bucks to 4 does out of which only 1 had given me a viable kit thus far.

Will I be able to sustain another 17 years? Most probably not. I am not too sure, it’s too far ahead. It is really tiring and I am not sure if I could really take all the heartaches anymore.

When you go into Holland Lops, the odds are already against you. Viable litters most of the time comes only in 50%. Out of which your entire herd’s death rate stands at approximately 20%. Which means out of 100, 20 would die due to unknown causes. I only have 7 right now. I really do hope that the odds leave me alone for a while, at least.

It is particularly hard being one of the pioneers of raising this breed in Malaysia. Have all my US breeder friends to thank for all the sharing of experiences. I’ve never seen a hobby that could take over your life but as the saying goes, Holland Lop rules!

Indeed they do…

My Version Of A Perfect Holland Lop Part 2?

Extremely unsatisfied with my lack of talent, I persevered. I continue sketching, sketching and more sketching. Alas, this was by far the best I could produce. Indeed this shall be my objective and goal. My own perfect Holland Lop…

My Perfect Holland Lop!

My Perfect Holland Lop!

What do you think? Cute?

On the side note, I felt pretty refreshed this weekend. I realized how much I should not take my Hollands for granted. Taking a step backwards and realizing how each and everyone of them having a history of their own make them extra special and precious.

I believe what most breeders fear most is the possibility of losing their favorites and I am no exception. When we do loose our favorites, we kept on hoping that they would manifest themselves in the future generations of rabbits that we breed.

How we wish that our pets will never leave us. That way, it will save a lot of frustration and heart breaks.

But who are we to decide when we’re merely weak human beings.

Have great week ahead everyone!

My Version Of A Perfect Holland Lop?

I have not touched a 2B pencil and a drawing board for a very long time. I just had an idea to put into drawing what I have in mind as a perfect Holland Lop for me. I guess it did not turn out that well. The fact remains that I am no better in drawing compared to my talented father and perhaps my daughter – LOL!

So here I was thinking, I want those nice crowns, thick short front legs, perfectly huge head that is 1/3 the size of the entire rabbit and hind legs tucked beneath the center of the mid section and so on and so forth. And guess how that turned out?

The future of TLR?

The future of TLR?

I know! I am bad with drawing and sketches – LOL!

Why are Holland Lops so precious?

Ever wonder why Holland Lops are so precious? Many Holland Lop friends have been telling me that I have chosen the hardest breed to work with – they weren’t joking. I am in fact facing the most difficult phase of raising these wonderful creatures. Let me share the real scenario with you. When you go to any Holland Lop website, trust me, what you see on the website are the best of what the breeder have. It is very hard to breed Holland Lops (bad news for you money makers). If your “Holland Lops” are breeding like rabbits, don’t get too excited, most often than not, they are FAKE! Sorry to burst your bubble – LOL!

Holland Lops are very hard to breed and even harder to get show quality kits. The possibilities of does kindling viable kits are as low as 50%! Let’s just say that out of a 100 does bred, only 50 does will give you viable kits. And out of the 50 litters, you will be lucky to have 1 kit that may be competitive on the show table. That’s 1% success rate for you my dear friend.

Now I truly understand why breeders chuckled at me when I ask for a show quality rabbit. Most often than not, breeders will never get too excited thinking they have struck gold in the nest boxes.

Just want to work on some statistics to see what are my chances.

100 does = 50% viable kits

5 does = 2.5 % viable kits

Which means, I may have to try breeding my 5 does 40 times before I can even get to the possibility of getting litters of viable kits. I am not even talking about getting a Show Quality kit.

So what do you think? Is Holland Lops for you?

Firstly, don’t be easily fooled into thinking you got a Show Quality and definitely don’t be fooled into thinking Holland Lops breed like rabbits. What we have at hand is a breed that defies all normalities! The Hallmark breed is called such for a reason. They are far from your ordinary bunnies.

Now, please blow the probability this way as I have 34 times to go!

A Humble Tribute To Yasmin Ahmad

I am sure all of us remember this one:

Her world is one that none of us could explain. She is above all our “normal” understandings and beliefs. She is one artwork that we will never be able to replace. Just like the world lost Michael Jackson, we have indeed lost our central creativity. She has boldly defy what we believe to be the “norm”.

Taken from The Storyteller - http://yasminthestoryteller.blogspot.com/

Taken from The Storyteller - http://yasminthestoryteller.blogspot.com/

Yasmin Ahmad left this world with many of her beautiful creations. What makes her work so unacceptable to us was because she told the truth through the lenses. She told the truth from her inner most being – her inner soul. Indeed she has lived and we have merely existed, and yet we continue to exist.

One TV commercial that none of us could ever forget was the one simply entitled “Tan Hong Ming’s Love”. It was aired a few weeks before we celebrated our 50th year of independence. Let’s spend a little time watching this simple but yet very provocative video.

Set at a national school where children of all races come together for their formal primary education, Tan Hong Ming was asked whether he has got a girlfriend. We know not to encourage dating at such a young age but his innocence was what we really needed. We, the adults must indeed remember the time where “TRUE” love flourished. Tan Hong Ming’s love isn’t one that is ordinary in our eyes. You see, in reality we were called to be scattered through race. Look at the political parties we have today. They are race based! Look at public schools today. They are race based! That is exactly what makes Tan Hong Ming’s love so pure and uncorrupted! He have learned to love a girl of a different race. It makes me wonder why are we trying so hard when what we really need is sheer simplicity. Why are our leaders making decisions that could only bring harm to these innocent children that we learn so much from?

We are all shamed by the innocence Yasmin Ahmad has brought out through his creation. Gone are the days when we have a game of football with friends of many different races, background and creed. Today we have so much differences that are created in the imagination of our minds. We poison our own beliefs. We become fanatics.

It is nerve wreaking that our local dailies are selling with headlines highlighting DEAF, MURDER, THEFT, RAPE and POLITICAL UNREST. We no longer want all these. We are in the 21st century and are civilized beings. We no longer live on trees or in caves and definitely hunting is not one of our main activities in life. We are called to increase the population of our country but yet we’re killing ourselves. There are much more to be celebrated. Let’s stop all the petty issues today and move on to build a better tomorrow.

I take my hat off Yasmin Ahmad. She is no different but a human that fight for unity. Her world could be shared even more if only there isn’t any discrimination. Many international awards but unrecognized in her own homeland. Many would agree that she worked very hard to be recognized locally.

I saw this one in Singapore:

This one brought tears to my eyes:

And how could we forget the commercial that never fails to remind us Chinese folks to go back home for reunion dinner every Chinese New Year?

And isn’t this one real?

How many more good people must be lose in order for us to truly be awake?

May you rest in peace Yasmin Ahmad. You have touched our lives. May we make a conscious decision with good conscience for UNITY.

Thank you for all that you have given us. SEPET remains my favorite homegrown movie.

A Very Special Visit!

I am so honored to have Keat visiting the rabbitry. I learned so much in the span of a short few hours during his visit. Keat is filled with so much knowledge that I found it really hard to keep up. But one thing for sure, he LOVES Thunder!

Keat checking out Muffet

Besides all the bunny talks, many important topics were discussed today and mostly was about Holland Lops (of course). There were mana “AHA!” moments and one particular statement made by Keat really stood out from the rest. He told me over lunch that he enjoys hanging out with fellow rabbit enthusiasts. I could relate to that immediately because up until today, I was trying to figure out what was it between rabbit people that is so attractive. The words that I was looking for exactly are “a quiet understanding”. Keat brought that out very clearly when he mentioned that when rabbit people come together, there is no need for explanation as to why he likes rabbits. To put it plainly each rabbit person would know exactly why they are attracted to rabbits. That’s exactly what draws me to rabbit people too. I don’t have to explain myself to people who do not understand my liking for this wonderful breed called the Holland Lops.

Keat taught me a lot of stuff today from judging Holland Lops to sharing with me how he palpate does for kits. He adviced me to work on what matters as far as point allocation was concerned for the Holland Lops. The gis of it all that I can’t agree more was that color is not at all important in Holland Lops as that only contributes very little in the overall point allocation. He somehow puts me into the right perspective.

Keat got Clark to pose in an instant!

Keat got Clark to pose in an instant!

I was hoping Keat would point out some of my mistakes in the overall management of the rabbitry and I basically left the rabbitry like how it usually is. I did not go out of the way cleaning and making it shine to impress. But I was flattered that Keat thought it was very clean and my rabbits are all healthy.

His end remark was “…visiting the premier rabbit man, Timmy Chan, in Malaysia. We should all keep our rabbits that clean!!!”. That really cracked me up.

As a conclusion of his visit, I must say that TLR needs to reset the clock and try things all over again. If you can decode that it would be good, but I am sure Keat knows what I am referring to. He left without any stones unturned as far as the rabbits are concerned.

Since I was busy listening, he even wrote notes for me!

Thank you so much Keat, I really appreciate you coming over and showing me a thing or two!

In case you didn’t know, Keat’s an ARBA Registrar and he knows Holland Lops!

He owns a hobby farm called Tymin.
