What Winning Means To Me?

I suddenly felt the urge to write a long post today. I hope this post would serve as a reminder for all of us what it means to have a hobby.

Let’s begin with a few questions:

1. What is the price to pay for winning?

2. What are the reasons for winning?

3. Why is winning so important?

As you all may know, I am currently taking the lead to get the ARBA Sanctioned Rabbit Shows up and running come 4th June 2011. It is not an easy task but I am really looking forward to it.

Also on the other hand, many people approached me and said to me, “Now with so much hype and publicity surrounding you, how would you feel or what will you do if you do not win?”. My answer is pretty simple, the hype and publicity is not about me, but my rabbits. All the newspaper articles was really featuring my rabbits, not me! I am but an instrument to bring forth the realization of the general public of this hobby and the Holland Lop breed.

Do allow me to answer the above questions one at a time:

1. What is the price to pay for winning?

I believe the 3 questions above are very much related. We have to first ask ourselves, why do we want to win so badly?

There are many rabbit breeders in this world with different intentions. My main intention is to build a community of rabbit lovers (I repeat, rabbit lovers) that emphasize on the well being of the rabbits regardless of breeds. For breeders, I hope it is a platform to build a community of ethical and responsible breeders working hard towards improving the breeds of their interest.

With that said, I really do not mind who takes home the largest trophy of the day because we all should be proud that we have really good rabbits that will be given due recognition for their close adherence to the Standard Of Perfection.

But I must say that most of the time, winning is a pride thing.

Some want it for all the wrong reasons. Winnings can bring a windfall to rabbit sales, that we cannot deny because everyone wants a piece of the winning cake. But this reason for winning may get the best of us. There are many things one can do for the sake of getting to the top.

Honestly, if I really want to win the following are some of the things that I might have done or will do and I do not mean to question the integrity of the judges:

1. Engage someone who have sold me some rabbits to judge and make sure I win. With the win, I can boast to the world and mark up the prices of my rabbits.

2. Import all the Grand Champions of the world to stay a Grand Champion in the circuit.

But hell no, the first thing that came to my mind when we decided to organize a show is to do some homework and find out which judge/judges has not send anything over here. We want everyone to compete on the same level. And to be very honest, I really hope that a Malaysian homegrown rabbit would win BIS.  Which means a rabbit that has been bred from imported lines and possesses/retained the good traits fit to compete with the imports. That is utmost important. Of course that would be ideal but not realistic at this juncture as many has only just started importing.

2. What are the reasons for winning?

When we seek to improve, competition gives us the platform to do just that. Firstly, we will not know what we are lacking without an examination. A conformation show is nothing but an examination of our rabbits against the standards laid down. Winning will only tell us how far or near we are to being perfect. Nothing is perfect of course.

At the end of the day and as I have mentioned countless times, this is but a hobby for me. But to some, hobby may be turned into business. The main reason for winning sometimes may be the recognition needed to boost business. Making it a business while still holding steadfast to the major principle for breeding (improvement of breed) would be acceptable (I guess). The problem arise when we abandon the quality for quantity that can be translated in to riches.

3. Why is winning so important?

Perhaps this question is related to the preceding one. But really, we must ask ourselves why is it so important to win. Winning is a prideful thing. It gives us affirmation that we are the best. Now you should have noticed that I use – WE and I. Who are WE and I? Yes, we humans desires the win. Do you really think that the rabbit knows? Perhaps some would know as some pets are known to yearn of affirmation and praises.

The hobby turns ugly when winning becomes important. The attention shifts from the rabbits to their owners instead. “My rabbit wins BIS”, “I am the best breeder in Malaysia” and the I continues to be amplified.

Lastly, I would like to use the 3 words my dear Momma Cheri uses all the time:

Fellowship

Without the fellowship, Frodo can’t get to his destination. Whether you are the organizers or not, let’s look out for each other, laugh and cry with each other, enjoy the moments with each other and surround ourselves with people who understand our craziness over the rabbits. This is the place where we all speak the same bunny language (there will be a lot of humans doing binkies when winners are announced).

Friendship

Let’s ask ourselves this question, “What is the average lifespan of a rabbit against the average lifespan of a human being?”

Yes, we must build this community of PEOPLE with the SAME HOBBY. Rabbits come and go whether or not they are Best In Show winners. Even reputation last longer than rabbits. Without the human, there will not be a rabbit hobby. It is the hobby that sustains the friendship.

Fun

Not forgetting to take things less seriously and have fun. Congratulate a winner, laugh hard at all the shortcomings (not without landing a hand of course) and savor the joyful moments.

In competition there will always be winners and losers. And as Momma Cheri always say….

At any given day, any given judge and given rabbits…

A show that everyone enjoys to the fullest and to crown (as winners) the most beautiful rabbit among all the beautiful rabbits present is WHAT WINNING MEANS TO ME…

P.S.: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMA CHERI! We love you tons and millions. One of my biggest pillars of strength in this hobby. This post is also inspired by Rev. Fr. S L. Inspiring sermon today. Yes, we are called to be gatherers!

A Love Letter Once In A While

Once in a long while, I will receive a “love” email from a breeder I once imported from. Today was one of those days that I received such an email. The email was pretty nasty and is of harassment material in nature. It was filled with intimidation and threats.

I guess with all the recognitions and publicity shining so ever brightly on me, there must be a few jealous fellas (oh, that rhymed didn’t it?).  As I have wrote about giving one the recognition of a reputable breeder, recognitions are to be given by others. And with so many articles featuring Tru-Luv Rabbitry, speaks for itself.

In the email, I have been accused of deceiving my readers through my weblog. I just cannot agree. This blog at the e nd of the day, is my personal “journal” where I write about my experience and expresses my excitement, joy and everything else. It is still up to the discretion of my readers to take it seriously, less seriously or they may even think of it as crap. I just can’t control what people say, think or feel.

Let’s take a step back and find out what is the real definition of a web log:

1. WordNet: web log – a shared on-line journal where people can post diary entries about their personal experiences and hobbies; “postings on a blog are usually in chronological order”

2. it-station.co.uk – web log – A web page used as a diary or journal. Web logs are updated regularly and may contain any information that the author wishes to share with the world. Also known as a “blog”.

I believe the above information is rather ELEMENTARY and simple enough for the simple and not so simple minded.

In moments like these, I always go back to how grateful I am to have known Scott Rodriguez, Kay Miller, Teri Reymann and the rest of my bunny families in USA. They showed me what good breeders are – generous, classy, understanding and helpful to name a few good traits. We bunny people tend to treat people like our bunnies sometimes. What do we do with bad traits? We breed them out of the herd through selling as pets (the term cull is used). This person is definitely of cull (pet) quality just like the rabbits I got from her. I don’t think she’ll make a good pet either – bites and scratches all the time – LOL!

If it wasn’t for Scott, Kay and Teri, my herd would have never come this far. Yes by that, I mean that all my rabbits before Ivy Crescent’s Thunder, Miller’s Clark, Sonshine’s Brown Sugar, Wark & Miller’s Carmel and Ivy Crescent’s Haley are of brood/pet quality but have been sold to me as cream of the crop (top dollar, expensive junk). All the bad traits were improved (faster) with the help of these 3 people and my careful selective breeding knowledge acquired through a collective group of people I love to call FRIENDS. Knowledge I have never learned from this so called breeder. I also learned that the major part of this hobby is to turn crap into gold.

For those of you in the rabbit world long enough, you will know who I am referring to. I am never ever going to mention or give credit to this person because  no one should patronize such a nasty person who not only cheats but harasses at her whim and fancy.

Oh, by the way, it is technically impossible for a BOSB to end up a BRIS. Thought it would be nice to share…

If I can turn back the hands of time, I wouldn’t change anything. Having to deal with a person like this really made me a stronger, smarter and better person. I made so many good friends in the hobby just because of this person.  I won’t thank her for that either because the number of friends and recognitions speak for themselves (my guess is, I am LOVABLE!). She can say whatever she wants but truth will always prevail. I hope you do not have to deal with such a person. Lastly, if you have heard anything that didn’t come from me, those are what we call rumors and 100% of the time is not true. One thing I learn in this hobby, always go directly to the source.

And I find no coincidence that each time this person is spoken of, it will always be concluded with….

GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH!

We need to sing the same song

I do not know what inspired me with this blog title but it came to my mind this morning while I was driving. Right now I can’t really recall what I want to write about it but as I go along typing perhaps I will remember.

I believe it was about this entire rabbit thingy again (what else could it be?). I am losing my memory power pretty quick these days so for those who might be interested in dealing with me, please forgive me if I have forgotten anything at all or will be forgetting.

Yesterday while I was doing my usual rabbit blog hopping, I read a very interesting article about REPUTABLE BREEDERS. I think right now with all the Show Rabbit Breeders “mushrooming” in Malaysia, it is very relevant for us. I wish that everyone will start off on the right footing. Please visit one of my favorite blogs of all time (and also a blog by a family I hold close to my heart) – Three Little Ladies Rabbitry Blog post entitled WHAT IS A REPUTABLE RABBIT BREEDER?.

As you can see, I am still very far off from being a Reputable Breeder considering that I do adhere to most of the “protocols” of running a little rabbitry. I guess not many people know how much work is put into it except for those who have deal with me personally before. As the article suggests, a reputable breeder is one that never praises himself but rather have someone else recommending him/her as a reputable breeder. In short, a reputable breeder is a title given by others.

So here’s my request for my buyers/adopters/customers. I hope you can spend some time commenting on this blog post about your experience dealing with me and if you feel that I have been a reputable breeder. In short, do I meet or exceed your expectations? Do I impart good knowledge? Please write anything that you feel is proper and relevant.

And coming back to the title of this post today, indeed we really need to Sing the same song in this rabbit hobby. We must sing the same song called “REPUTABLE BREEDER”.

I hope with the upcoming MROC ARBA Sanctioned Rabbit Shows this coming June 4th 2011, everyone will get an idea what rabbit shows should be. Please also bear in mind that this is our first time organizing such a show at this capacity and we ask for forgiveness for all the shortcomings and glitches that will happen.  Please know that we are all doing our best so that all rabbit owners will have fun on this day. Win or lose, we must be proud of ourselves as Malaysians for having some of the nicest rabbits and taking the first step in joining the ranks of those in other parts of the world to hold ARBA Sanctioned Rabbit Shows. Please give us your fullest support and be kind to the same people who is spending their precious time making this event a success. It is not the effort of a single individual but a collective effort by a group of people who love to share. Let’s have fun!

Before I end my long winded post today, I would like to share a few photos of Tru-Luv Balian. Balian is back in Meadow Haven for a while and I am really proud of this little buck. Also not forgetting his wonderful/amazing family especially little Meg (she’s 3 years old this year if I remember correctly). I really want to thank them for taking such good care of Balian. I cannot stop seeing Clark in Balian.

Look who's back?

And he's always in a molt when he comes back - LOL!

Not perfect but good enough for me...

Happy Weekend everyone! Please drop me a little testimonial if you have any. Thank you in advanced!

Translated: The Rabbit Man with his herd of 17 Pedigreed Rabbits by Kenn Yeap

This grown up man full of love is renowned for breeding pedigreed rabbits and he loves them just like his children. Tim started this hobby 4 years ago and he has since expanded into a herd of 17 rabbits and there are now 3 generations of rabbits since then. He breeds and raises a special type of pure breed rabbit called Holland Lop. These rabbits have cute faces and droopy ears that one finds it hard to resist not touching them.

Tim treats his rabbits just like his own children by providing them with the best living environment (a special room dedicated to them alone), care, feeds them imported diet and each one have his deserving “fatherly love”. Not forgetting, each one of them has a unique name to go with. This rabbit tale is unique especially when 2011 Lunar New Year falls on the year of the Rabbit and this is a herd of the luckiest of rabbits. Getting from a small number of 4 to 17, Tim proves sceptics that it is possible to raise what is dubbed as the hardest breed to work with among rabbit enthusiasts.

This 30 year old IT Engineer transforms into a loving father the moment he steps into home caring not only for his human family but also a group of gentle rabbits through providing each and every one of them a sweet and loving home.

Led by the love for animals, Tim has kept many types of animals as pets throughout his life and still finds rabbits as his favourite. According to him, though they are small animals, they are just like human beings needing care and love. We as owners must be responsible for their lives until their last breath.

Tim’s herd of rabbit consists 3 generations of both young and old rabbits from those he initially imported from USA throughout the past 4 years.

“The Holland Lop is one of the rabbit breeds with the best temperament and they are extremely easy to care for are some of the reason why I chose to work with this breed”. Holland Lops usually come in the brownish tortoiseshell colour, small in size and the “trademark” of this breed is their small, rounded drooping ears – thus, the word “LOP”. Presently sold for RM 800 in the market, Tim first fell in love with those cute apple shaped cheeks. After years of breeding the Holland Lop, one can call Tim a professional rabbit breeder.

In the midst of bad economy, when many cannot even feed themselves, one may ask how someone can find the time and money to keep pets. For Tim, his love for his rabbits goes beyond the value of money – they are priceless.

“For me, rabbits are like my children and as a father I must give them the best”. Tim and his wife have 2 daughters who also share his passion for the rabbits. Since providing the rabbits with the most comfortable living environment is Tim’s responsibility, he has dedicated a big room in his house equipped with big cages for each rabbit and even a ventilation fan to make sure there is good air circulation. He ensures that their living quarters are always kept clean and dry.

While it is easy to keep them as pets, Holland Lops according to Tim are very difficult to breed and successes only comes in 3 to 4 babies per litter. Even with successful pregnancy and delivery, mortality rate can be quite high.

“When I first started to breed Holland Lops, my American friends used to tease me and said that it is difficult to succeed but with a lot of care, almost every pregnancy and delivery was successful and survival rate is quite high too. I am proud of that”, he expressed happily. Not long after, he started a blog and shared his experience; his American friends praised and have high regards for him.

To care for the Holland Lop seemed easy but one must be meticulous. Diet for instance, Tim insist to feed his rabbit food imported from USA especially Timothy Hay. Timothy Hay contains crucial nutrients especially fibre that help ensure motility of the gut. This important food source is available in most major pet stores which cost RM 22 a pack, a month’s supply for one rabbit.

Tim mentioned that he found locally milled rabbit pellets contain sand. He suspected that irresponsible and unethical businessmen added sand in their production to increase the weight of their product. He adds, “This will damage and give an adverse affect to the rabbit’s stomach which may lead to death. That is the reason why I chose to feed them imported feed because of the guaranteed quality”

Being a seasoned breeder after 4 years, Tim cares for pregnant rabbits personally and is able to predict the number of babies through a skill he learned from his friends in US call palpation. This will give a good estimation so that in the events of a retained baby, he is able to know. “If that happens, we must be responsible for the outcome”, he said.

Tim will send any doe with such complication to the vet so that they will be able to help expel the baby from the doe. After that, Tim will provide the doe with proper food rich in nutrients for her to recuperate and be able to nurse the surviving babies. He will ensure all babies are tucked in the “warm baby room” (nest box).

Tim will make a round of check every morning before leaving for work just to make sure that all kits are alright. Tim is very well versed with each and every one of his rabbit’s behaviour. Even judging by the looks of their poo, he is able to gauge the state of health of the rabbits. “If a rabbit stops passing motion, then I will ask my wife to help keep an eye on it”

Tim spends 1 to 2 hours daily cleaning the cage after dinner every day. “The cleaning work is pretty simple. I just need to change the bedding in the litter tray and wash their food/water bowls, that’s it. For certain, I will spend some time playing with them because you just can’t deny a cute face asking for some head rubs”. Occasionally, the rabbits will take turns to stretch themselves and have fun in the living room with the family.

According to Tim, Holland Lops is like dogs and can be quite responsive. Also, another reason that Holland Lops are easy to be kept as pets because they are very quiet animals and with proper care, they do not have repulsive odour making them popular condominium and apartment pets.

“All my rabbits are litter trained and in fact, it is their instinct to have a favourite spot to relief themselves. To litter train a new rabbit is fairly easy, look for its favourite spot and place the litter tray with wood pellets in it at its favourite spot. The litter tray must be washed everyday so that there will not be any odour”, Tim said.

“If you are prepare to do some cleaning, keeping a rabbit as pet will not be difficult for you”, Tim adds.

Tim has lots to tell about rabbits. For instance, he shared that kits must be kept warm, their eyes will only open on the 10th day and some does will stay next to the nest to ensure that her babies will not be taken away.

Tim also explains that after giving birth, the doe will leave the nest and by doing so, predators will not be able to find the nest. Raising his rabbits for the past 4 years, Tim truly understands his rabbits’ habits well. When they are happy, they will jump up high while twisting their bodies. When sleeping sideways, it means they are comfortable and feel safe. When they feel threatened, they will grunt.

Tim keeps a journal of his joys and fun in the hobby on his blog. To date, his blog has attracted 128,000 hits and many rabbit enthusiasts contacted him for advice after reading his blog.

“When I receive calls, I am very happy because I get to share the experience”. Tim loves to share. “Even though he spends a lot of time on the rabbits, he manages his time well and never short-changes our daughters and me, said Tim’s wife Mary Anne. She met him during high school days and it was his loving heart that attracted her. That is the reason why she gives him her fullest support and they care for the rabbits as a team.

Tim will only sell his rabbits to fellow rabbit lovers. But he will ensure the buyers have proper environment for his rabbits and most of the time he visits the buyers’ house before deciding to share his rabbits with them. “I only sell to sincere and genuine people. If the environment does not meet my expectations, I will refuse proceed with the sale” Unless they are really prepared, Tim will not sell his rabbits. In fact, he recently rejected a request because the environment was not conducive enough.

Since 2011 is the Rabbit year and many among the Chinese community will tend to purchase things which carry the symbol of the rabbit. Tim is worried that there will be an influx of people keeping rabbits as pets and when the hype is over, there will be too many unwanted pets.

“We have seen many stray dogs and cats. What if it happens to Rabbits? It will be a serious problem. Stray dogs and cats at least can seek out food and shelter but rabbits can’t. Death is certain if one decides to abandon his or her rabbit”, he said.

Tim also mentioned that a famous pet store chain takes in big bulk of underage rabbits just to meet the demand during Chinese New Year. He personally witnessed underage rabbits being sold in a filthy environment without proper ventilation. What’s worse is that there are many sick rabbit that dies in the cage without proper care.

“I dare no imagine how it will be if this (rabbit abandoning) happens”, Tim expressed solemnly. He hopes that those who buy rabbits to be kept as pets to keep them well and urge them to take full responsibility for them. Do not just buy for the sake of buying and later loses interest before abandoning them. “This sort of act only means that one does not have respect for life”, he said. Tim also suggests to those who are unable to care for their rabbits (with sensible reasons) to contact him so that he can help place them in good home through his blog.

Clark is son of Carmel. When I asked Tim who is his favorite, he said, "Clark" and his 3 year old daughter Bethany beside was quick to interrupt saying, "Clark went to heaven already". I was almost brought to tears when I heard that. Recently, Tim went through a rough patch. Sensing his sadness, Clark stopped eating and sadly passed away. According to Tim, rabbits can sense their owner's feeling. Since then, Tim enters the rabbit room with a smile in his heart...

My Window To Narnia

A Door.

Not a door to a wardrobe but a door into a room – Meadow Haven. Beyond this door, mine is not of Mr. Tumnus, Prince Caspian or even Aslan. But mine comes in the form of Thunder, Carmel, Haley, Holly Hope, Fred, Sibylla and many more interesting character just like the Minotaurs and Centaurs in the world of Narnia.

Once in this room, my time freezes. Tru-Luv is the name of the rabbitry and Tru-Luv is located in Meadow Haven. Meadow as we know is a lush and green place filled with fresh grasses and flowers in Spring time. If you still find it hard to imagine, just think of Anne of Green Gables. Don’t we all wish to sit for a moment to see rabbits binkying and frolicking in the meadow? They can be seen popping up and down playing with one another. Haven on the other hand is a place we all wish to be – a comfortable place where peace flourish and love abundant. Together, Meadow Haven almost equates to heaven here on earth for each and every rabbit residing in it.

I find solace in this little room every day. I find my sanity although it seemed insane. Taking a little moment just to be with the happy bunnies in this room recharges my soul. They are peaceful, cheeky and inquisitive all at the same time.

Almost never have I had any rabbit that will not greet me the moment I walk into the room. My rabbits know me and I know my rabbits very well. They are always at the cage door asking for a little head rub. I have seen rabbits that curl up at one corner at the back of their cages fearing to be picked up. Two factors to get a friendly rabbit are time and trust.  The more time you spend with your rabbit, the more trust it have being handled by you.

Home Is Where You Huddle Together...

Here’s a little preview of what’s ushering in the Chinese New Year this year…

Simple yet difficult questions

I have just completed a very interesting 2.5 hours interview (details soon). This will kick off a series of interviews coming up for Tru-Luv Rabbitry. Just imagining me talking 2.5 non stop all about Holland Lops, rabbits and more rabbits, I must be such an interesting subject – 😛

I believe the interview went really well. I answered all questions without preparing so it was rather straight from the heart like how it always is. But I somehow felt that I didn’t hit home with most of the simple questions.

One of the question that I find hard answering these days is “Why do you like Holland Lop or rather rabbits?” You can always expect me to be dumbfounded by this simple question. I really can’t answer.

I did apologize to the interviewer that I find certain question very hard to answer because my mind is more preoccupied with the technicalities like color genetics and general drug dosages for rabbits. It is like going from 100 km/hour and suddenly asked to drop to 30 km/hour. But I do understand that generally, the public is still unaware of certain things and I just need to work the brain more to help them understand from my perspective.

For most of us, we always begin with “I like Holland Lops because they are cute”. But for me, I have moved beyond that and if I answer “I love to have hands on experience with dispositions and color genetics”, it will be quite difficult to relate and that is something I do not like happening.

But for now, I would like to say that “I love Holland Lops because it is an obsession. It is an obsession that I have to prove to the world that ethical breeding is possible even with the tiniest of animals like Holland Lops and my obsession is to bring into this world beautiful and healthy rabbits to be shared by people who are obsessed with taking good care of their rabbits. YES, IT IS AN OBSESSION and it is called PASSION”.

For any man out there who likes cars and soccer. I am sure it is hard to get a good answer asking them, “Why do you like cars and soccer?”, RIGHT? I even found a friend dumbfounded when I ask him “Why do you like Liverpool?”

There you go, don’t ask me why cause that’s just ME and I have mad love for Holland Lops.

Cheers for the weekend!

YAY!

It is starting to snow on this blog again. Time for some nice Christmas photographs. Christmas time is always the happiest time at Meadow Haven.

That reminds me that I will need to again think of the new year’s resolution for the rabbitry. I believe a major clean up is needed. Just hope that I am able to find the time to do it.

We’re On a Mission

There’s a lot to be done for the near future. I made a promise to the Fluffies’ mama to reproduce Shiropudin (Tru-Luv Milkyway). Let’s see if I can make a cuter and better typed Shiro minus the Charlie marking. I have pledged to myself to never cross 2 broken pattern rabbits. Besides, my prayers for more solid Hollands has been answered. Now, the solid outnumbered broken patterned Hollands.

Shiro

The line ups for my Shiropudin project would be:

Baby Symphony

Fred boy

Baby Magique

Baby Mystique

Sibylla

Let’s see what happens in the next few months…
