Jersey What?

For the past few years, I have been hearing about people selling Jersey Wooly in Malaysia. When I look at their photos, I was horrified. Not horrific looking rabbits but how many people have been cheated.

Today, I am glad and proud to say that we have the real JERSEY WOOLY in MALAYSIA!!!

And they look like the following:

This is a real Jersey Wooly!!!

TinyCritterz.com

I am extremely glad and pleased to announce the launching of our very own online pet store – www.tinycritterz.com.

As all of you may know, I have been blogging for a while now and has been recommending quite a number of good rabbit products in the past. I felt that I can do better in terms of providing more services to my avid readers. This effort is also partly to get rid of all the “advertisements” on my blog so that I can just write better articles.

My wish for this new venture is to allow my readers to obtain all the rabbit products (and more) that I have featured in the past and also those that I will recommend in future.

If you are at TinyCriterz.com right now, you will see that it is pretty empty and lack products. I hope that you will check back often and enjoy seeing it grow to a “MEGA” online store. Do bear with us as we are still expanding (not that vigorously). I am sure it will slowly take shape but right now, all the essentials are available for purchase, so please do patronize. Thank you very much in advanced.

There are so many people I would like to thank for supporting me and encouraging me to take this little leap into business. As you all know, I do not do bunny business that much due to my policy. The idea of an online pet store came about mainly due to that same reason. I felt that I did not provide enough services to my readers. Many have expressed their interest in my rabbits but sad to say that many may have walked away empty handed mainly because I do not have enough to share. So here you have it, I am sharing in another form of service – the convenience to purchase what your bunny needs (at your fingertips) over the Internet.

TinyCritterz.com as you can see are 2 words made up of the acronym of my name Timothy Chan (TC). I believe it is the right time for an extension out of Tru-Luv Rabbitry to have a retail arm to support everyone in the hobby of raising pets. I hope that everyone will patronize and leverage on this service that I humbly provide.

It is our hope, both my wife and I that in the near future, we can channel some of the profit made by TinyCritterz.com to help in any independent/non-profitable animal welfare societies or bodies. Though it is still a long way to go but we shall always have this thought on mind.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my former boss Ms. Lew for giving me the encouragement to take this giant leap, you can never deny the words of a wise woman. Also (but not least), I would like to thank the artist/digital illustrator (a dear friend) whose works I have always admired and loved, Ms. Lauren Elizabeth of Ruffles Art Studio (also on facebook) for having flawlessly illustrated Tru-Luv Balian as featured in the logo of TinyCritterz.com. And I did requested her to give a little smug smile to Balian in her illustration.

The amazing work of Ms. Lauren Elizabeth - I love to call her the digital art prodigy.

The Breaking Point

First of all, I just wanted to say that Tru-Luv Rabbitry blog turns 3 years old last June 18, 2010. Life has been hectic and I actually forgotten all about it. Wow, can’t believe it has already been three (3) years of writing! Or is it?

I can’t remember when was the last time that I have really written a good piece here but I would like to thank all my faithful readers for always dropping by. Please accept my humble apologies for being so quiet for such a long time. Today, I promised myself that I will write a pretty long one. It may be a pretty random post and hopefully you won’t get lost reading it. Such a beautiful weather it is this cool rainy Sunday! And blogging to the sounds of Susan Boyle can be pretty inspiring.

I have chosen an interesting topic (for me at least) – The Breaking Point. We just came back from a small gathering with our friends from Furrybutts and Furfurries. The furries were pretty late so we didn’t really have time to catch up. But nonetheless, they have pretty much given me some ideas for this post.

As you all may have read in my previous postings that I have pets throughout my life so far and there isn’t a time when I didn’t have a pet. I am very proud to say that most of my pets live through their natural life span but I must also admit that there were instances where I had given up on some along the way. Very difficult decision but all that I have given up have good if not better homes.

I noticed that there are many similarities among pet lovers. One of the similarities that I found is that, at one point or another a person decides to take up the responsibility of looking after a living being. And he or she tends to treat this pet like his or her own child. Both pet and owner soon build a very strong bond between them. I must say that pets with shorter life span has better lives because they live short enough to avoid the Breaking Point. Some live through the Breaking Point but most become the victim of the Breaking Point.

Before I continue, rest assure, there isn’t any Breaking Point at the moment among us but I just thought of writing about it. Please allow me to digress, I am pretty glad that I have put Tru-Luv Rabbitry in the scrutiny of the public through my blog. It actually helps me to keep on going in this hobby.

So when do you know you’re in the midst of the Breaking Point?

It always start off with DOUBT. Questions like “Am I adequate enough to look after Fluffy right now?” and “Is Fluffy getting enough attention from me right now?” are examples and tell tale signs of the Breaking Point.

In my previous experiences, most of the Breaking Point I went through was because of the constant nagging from someone who doesn’t like pets at home. Boy am I glad that I am an adult now with my own space and time for the things I love to have. Yes, not everyone in this world can tolerate your little pet. I count my blessings because my beautiful wife loves animals too! And yes, please add “love pets” as one of the criteria before you start dating your girl/boy friend if you are a pet lover. Having a pet is like having a religion sometimes. Also watch out for those man/woman that agrees on everything before marriage and thereafter, forgets every single promise – LOL!

Breaking Points can also be caused by a new job, a new born and everything new that pushes poor little Fluffy off the edge of your heart. The pet industry is a thriving industry due to this reason. The turnover is very high and it is a vicious cycle for the little living creatures.

So the next time when you look down at little Fluffy, and starts to convince yourself that there is a better home out there for him, think again. Turn around and remind yourself what Fluffy has so generously given you up to that point – UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.

Three long years.  So what have I learn from Holland Lops in the past 3 years? Nothing. I am really serious, NOTHING AT ALL. Holland Lops tend to have a mind of their own. They give a whole new experience to those who think that they have seen it all. To some, there are nothing but surprises and for others, they are the BREAKING POINT.

Anyway, it was really nice to see Buttons, Yohji, Tridus, Tinga, Whiskey, Yuffie, Echo and a glimpse of Bailey today.

Cutie Yohji!

Did I mention anything about regret before? Good thing is, I have had only a few regrets passing my rabbits on so far because 90% are extremely good homes. In short, I almost never have any worry that my rabbits end up in bad homes. My regrets are usually from seeing the rabbits fully develop into awesome specimens than they already are when they leave me. Don’t get me wrong, but I do make the decision to pass them on as awesome as they are because I do not believe in passing on bad stuff. If you do not know what I mean, here you go…

Tru-Luv Balian

He lives with a little mouse, a dog and many more critters (I think)

He needs to come back and make some babies for me...

Valiant Balian - Miller's Clark's son!

Regret, Regret, Regret. LOL!

This is what I call good Pet keeping!

FYI, I took all these photos without the consent of the owner. I don’t really care because I need to steal Balian back! LOL! He is awesome posum right now!

Balian’s owners has agreed for him to come back to Meadow Haven to help me make some awesome babies! YeahooOOoooooo

My GrooOooom Mobile

While many pet lovers spent their day at the Pet Expo, I was occupied with tons of stuff and one of them was spending time refurbishing my old grooming table.

It has been a while since I have a decent stand for my grooming platform so I decided to make one with wheels. Now I can groom anywhere I like.

Someone on the forum mentioned that he was expecting to see me at the pet expo but I have to apologize for my absence. After so long having pets I realized that we do move on to different things. Gone are the days when I spend all day long at pet shops or pet expos. I have learned what are the essentials that I need for my pets that I don’t find it worth getting at the expo. Basically, I have gone to expos like this for far too many times and I end up going home empty handed. So it is pretty pointless for me.

Last year it was pretty interesting to have a little rabbit show and I thought this year there would be one with an ARBA judge as promised by the fancy judge last year. It was mentioned that Mr. R***y may grace the show this year but I guess it did not happen.

Anyway, here’s my new Groom Mobile and I am loving it! Time well spent…

Oil Spills…

I wonder what most of my readers think about the oil spills that is happening right now. Look at all the pitiful animals affected and in fact unnecessary lost of lives.

As I write, I am truly sorry for the same that is happening to our (Malaysia) rabbit world right now. Mass breeding is like the act of draining earth off its natural resources. The lack of outlets to handle the “overproduction” is affecting all of us right now.

One very obvious sign is when Pet Shop starts to sell alleged “Purebreds”. The problem is the term Pet Quality. It is often overuse or should I say over rated. There are many levels to the quality of animals but those that end up in Pet Stores/Shops are no different from those that end up in Shelters, Animal Welfare and Rescuers.

Like oil spills, unwanted pets can spill SILENTLY as well and kills ever slowly. Many breeders are taking the easy way out and taking the fast solution of supplying their lesser stocks to pet shops/stores. Livestock has very high profit margin which is above 100% for the pet stores/shops. So imagine how much you can save going straight to the breeder. But please be prepared for some “shockers” during farm visits. Maybe it wouldn’t come across as “shockers” as I am pretty sure the cuteness can be very blinding. Whatever it is, good luck. I wouldn’t walk down that road if I were you…

Be an informed pet lover/buyer today! Demand for a pedigree with 4 generations of ancestry listing when you purchase a bunny. If we do not stand for something, we will never stand for anything! Yes, it may be a very small or petty issue but if we cannot do something as small as this the RIGHT way, what else can we look forward to?

Think logically, if the breeder is anywhere near a good one, his/her animals should not reach the pet shop. They should take the responsibility to ensure that their animals be placed in a good home and know the movements of their animals well!

Stop the SPILL today!

Thank You Caller!

I got a very interesting call today. One that is worth writing of. I can’t remember the name of the caller though (sorry, I am pretty bad with names sometimes). It started out pretty weird because the caller asked, “Is this Tru-Luv Rabbitry?”. Picking up a call like that somewhere outside of where the bunnies are tickles me a little. I always ask at the back of my head, “Hmm, can I say yes to this question?” – LOL!

Not really in the mood for bunny business today, I gave a pretty reluctant, YES and asked how I could be of help. She wanted a female rabbit from me. Before I write on, I would like to assure the caller (if she is reading this) that I am not trying to embarrass her or anything of that sort but this could serve as a very good example of how inquiries are handled.

She said that I was recommended by many reputable breeders and has bought a buck from another breeder. Then I asked her what was her objective for breeding. She said she wanted her family to have a huge Holland Lop family. To be honest I was pretty furious mentally for that answer given. My mind was literally saying, “Didn’t we just read about Pet Ethics the day before yesterday?”. Then I could hear a small voice saying, “Not everyone reads your blog, you moron! You think you’re super star now?”. LOL!

I took a deep breath and I asked, “Have you been to my blog and read some of the postings that I have written because I am pretty sure you are not aware of what I do and how I work with my rabbits”. I almost ended the conversation asking her to just visit my blog and read, read, read and read more!

I felt that would be a little arrogant so I asked her another question, “Do you know that I neuter pets before sending them to pet homes and I also have a no breeding agreement?”

She then asked, “You mean the rabbits are spayed or castrated before their owners get to keep them? Why? Is there a way that I can have an intact doe?”

And that started off my long winding “lecture” on the phone. I told her I get a lot of inquiries like hers and her reason for breeding is just like any other that I have heard and what I dread most. I then asked her a very simple question, “Do you know what is the breed standard for Holland Lop?”

She said yes and have learned of “Champ Breed”. In my heart, I was like “What The HELL?”. I then told her that there is no such term called Champ Breed. I allowed her to finish her explanation and she told me that she has gone to the breeder’s farm to pick out her buck and was taught many things about the Holland Lop. The breeder apparently gave her a little guide book to go with the buck she bought. She was pretty confident and told me that she could recognize between a good/nice rabbit and set them apart from the mix bred. She uses the term “Pure BRED” pretty well.

As far as the breed standard is concerned, she could only tell me that a Holland Lop is judged by its leg muscles and short and broad ears. I told her that was far from the truth.

I then asked her if the breeder (a pretty famous one) that she got her buck from ever gave her a PEDIGREE. She said no, just a little guidebook. I then explained to her that a pedigree is a birth cert with a 4 generation ancestry listing. To a good breeder, the guidebook is good thrash material and the pedigree is utmost important. Through the pedigree we know what line or lines the rabbit in question comes from. And through that little document, we are able to determine how we should move forward breeding it if it is WORTHY of a SHOW QUALITY material.

Let’s stop a moment and think about it. Which is more of a business tactic – to neuter pets or just selling bucks? What about issuance of pedigree? If the rabbits sold are from imported stocks, they must come with 4 generations pedigree. But breeders overseas also practice the non-issuance of pedigrees to PET QUALITIES. Therefore, this lady has bought a pet quality rabbit which is a NO NO for me to be used as a breeding animal. Irresponsible breeders can also use PET QUALITY as a reason or excuse for their MIX BREDs and that is the norm here in Malaysia. For me, No PEDIGREE, NOT PUREBRED! I issue pedigrees for all my animals and because the pets are neutered, there isn’t any issue of giving new owners a copy of the pedigree. At least I am honest to let my “customers” know the ancestry to the rabbits that they own and be proud of them.

I further told her that I would appreciate if someone coming to me knows the basics really well before putting 2 rabbits together to breed. Firstly, a breeder must know his/her line very well and what other lines do they mix well with. Putting a male and female or a buck and doe together is EXTREMELY easy but what they produce do not necessarily make life easy for us.

Secondly, a breeder must know what faults do their rabbits have and how to go about fixing these faults using another rabbit that is complimentary to the one in question.

Ask anyone what quality of rabbits do they prefer and 100% would say SHOW QUALITY. So what happens to the PET QUALITY? Any answer would be correct but the one that I hate most is ABANDONMENT.

It is very challenging to breed Holland Lops but it is not uncommon for them to produce up to 6 in a litter. The question is, do we want 100% pet quality in the litter or at least have 40% of show quality? Even with 40% winning chance, there could still be 60% of abandonment. Either way, check mate aren’t we? In my opinion, we work towards 100% non-abandonment!

So, my suggestion is. We must start off working with good quality so that the PETS would not quite be PET QUALITY. Do you get what I mean? Therefore, you will sometimes see me selling what seemed to be SHOW QUALITY as NEUTERED PETS not because I do not know how to evaluate my Hollands but I strongly believe in a good home for my rabbits. That is definitely not a business tactic for repeat sales!

I then told her that I take breeding as an advanced topic. I also told her as breeders, we must work to improve and not staying at the PET level because we all know what happens to PETS at the end of the day.

I really do hope that I wasn’t being rude and she sounded appreciative of my pointers. I told her and I want to tell everyone reading my blog that I welcome all inquiries. Anyone can feel free to approach me through email for advice and I will try my level best to help all cases. I am willing to guide everyone through.

What made me wrote this is again not to slander or embarrass the caller but I found her applaud-able because I like her attitude. I like the fact that she is very WILLING to share and learn at the same time. I am not claiming that I know everything but I have a vision for a better pet industry for all. We may not get that anywhere near in our lifetime but I really do hope that our younger generations would be able to enjoy healthy and beautiful animals as pets.

So do I end up selling anything? NO! Is that business? NO! Do I even have repeat sales? NO!

Will others be willing to accept my approach to breeding? HOPEFULLY

Did I get the message of RESPONSIBLE BREEDING across to the caller? HOPEFULLY

Did I get another person to understand my objectives and cause? YES, and that is all that MATTERS!
