Reasons To Join ARBA (Tujuan Menjadi Ahli ARBA)

“What’s the reason we should join ARBA?”

This question totally caught me off guard and dumbfounded. I have been a member for so long, it did not dawn on me that I have totally lost the objective of joining this renown association. It has been such a norm for me to just renew my membership every year for the past few years.

It really serves as a reminder for me why I joined ARBA. Besides from being apart of the rabbit community at large here are 2 main reasons why I see people should join ARBA:-

1. Collecting Grand Champion Certificates

It all starts with Showing Rabbits. If a rabbit is to be registered by a registrar on behalf of ARBA, the owner must first be an active ARBA member. Without being a member, the rabbit in question has no owner to register against and therefore ARBA will not be able to track who is the owner of the rabbit. In short, in order to obtain the Grand Champion certificate, the owner must first be an active ARBA member and the rabbit must be registered and have obtained 3 GC legs.

2. Helping a club get ARBA Charter

In order for a rabbit club to obtain ARBA Charter, it must consist of a board of directors that are also ARBA members. So if you are interested to help get a local club/association obtain ARBA Charter, join as an ARBA member and volunteer yourself as one of the directors on the board. One of the main reasons why you would want to get a club or association chartered is because only ARBA Chartered club is allowed to purchase show sanctions.

Some of the myth that has been spreading here in Malaysia regarding ARBA membership:

Myth #1 – In order to issue pedigree, one must be an ARBA member – BULLSHIT. Anyone with high integrity can issue accurate pedigree.

Myth #2 – In order to tattoo rabbit, one must be an ARBA member – BULLSHIT. Just get a tattoo kit and start identifying your rabbits!

——————————————————————————————————————

Mitos #1: Untuk mengeluarkan pedigree/surat beranak, pemilik/penternak mesti menjadi ahli ARBA – TIDAK BENAR.

Mitos #2: Untuk tattoo arnab, pemilik/penternak mesti menjadi ahli ARBA – TIDAK BENAR.

Semoga gembira membaca. Njoi…..

I have Decided/Keputusan muktamad

I would love to die being known as a person who stand by my principles. There are things that certain people do that I do not agree with altogether. If it is done without intention, it should be forgiven. But repetition of the action only tells me that it was INTENTIONAL!

I am stating my conviction to my principles right now that I shall not support directly or indirectly in anyway the people and their actions of the following nature:-

1. Greedy

Trying to hit it rich with dishonesty in pricing average quality rabbits. Just because they are imported does not mean they are show stoppers commanding thousands of ringgits.

2. Lies

It is all about dishonesty. And people like that should be shown the pits. Showing off a catalog of nice rabbits but when it is time to deliver, it is a totally different rabbit altogether. Many excuses are used – camera lighting, camera model, age of rabbits. WTF? A Holland Lop’s crown will not vanish into thin air like how Pedigree sent out from the USA vanishes in the airplane man! A rabbit do not have that of a drastic change in just 1 to 2 months. Who are you trying to freaking fool?

A rabbit really have 4 legs but sometimes legs go missing. What I mean is, when trying to get your money, they will tell you that the rabbit has got many GC Legs and the prices skyrocket. But when you get the rabbit, there isn’t a pedigree or even GC Legs. Again, excuses would be use saying that somewhere out there someone made a mistake.

Don’t OVER PROMISE UNDER DELIVER LahhHHhhhhhh……

1. Tamak

Skim cepat kaya asalkan namanya IMPOT. Kenapa bukannya berbillion-billion ringgit harga arnab?

Bila sudah salah, keluar pulak perangai Si Toyolnya – “Tak It Or Leave It” pulak.

Wahai adik, jangan ambil manusia lain seperti katak bawah tempurung! I pun kirim surat guna PosLaju. Tak pernah tidak tiba. Takkan Syarikat Kurier USA begitu loyang. Berhentilah dengan semua pembohonganmu. Pecah belanga nanti…

Buat semua peminat2 arnab, jangan senang dibohong. Jangan sokong pembohong. Orang kata “take it or leave it”, LEAVE IT saja.

Lagunya seperti berikut…

Burung kakak tua
Hinggap di jendela
Nenek sudah tua
Giginya tinggal dua

Lechum Lechum Lechum
Mu la la
Lechum Lechum Lechum
Mu la la
Lechum Lechum Lechum
Mu la la
Burung Kakak Tua.

Tolong jangan salahkan Tim ye kalau I terlanjur kata dicatatan blog ini.

Akan tetapi jari2 I rasa gatal sikit. Mari, saya tolong taipkan sebanyak mungkin.

HEAD-Points 24: The head is to be massive in appearance. When viewed from the front, the head is to have good width, beginning at the front of the crown and rounding down between the eyes to an extremely short and well filled muzzle. The cheeks should be full and round. The head is to be set high and close to the shoulders. The size of the head is to be in proportion to the body. The eyes should be bold and deep set.

Faults – Pinched muzzle, flat cheeks; narrowness between the eyes. Fault severely for narrow or long head, or head too small to balance with body.

Istilah DISQUALIFIED ataupun DQ bermaksud arnab kalah bertanding terus tanpa penilaian.

Show Quality tidak perlu dijelaskan.

1000th Post

I initially wanted to reserve this post for a monumental moment. Having 1000 blog posts, should call for a celebration but something of great importance just cropped up and I find that it is a must for me to write. Nonetheless, this is a post dedicated to all rabbits in general. This post is inspired by a very dear bunny friend. She told me that it is a good year for EDUCATION. Indeed it is…

2011 as we all know is the year of the RABBITS and looking at how keeping pets has become an important part of our lives and how affordable it is, I for one is fearing for the lives of many innocent rabbits that has been or yet to be churned out for the PET MARKET.

I am not sure how ready Malaysia is to handle the overpopulation of Rabbits. It will be very overwhelming because the common rabbits are dubbed as breeding machines. They can churn out thousands if not controlled carefully. What has that got to do with us? The implication is huge!

Take for example the recent happening in the University of Victoria:

  1. http://www.greenmuze.com/blogs/green-muzings/2520-university-of-victoria-rabbit-cull-.html
  2. http://backofthebook.ca/2010/07/10/the-uvic-rabbit-problem-lessons-from-the-woods/3650/

It has become a huge problem for the animal control. A dilemma that is so difficult to handle because the fine line of moral principles can be easily crossed. Many activist groups are watching and thus, culling seemed to be an impossible option. Are we able to handle rabbits running wild in our country?

Rabbit overpopulation is not something uncommon. It has happened not only to isolated areas but an entire country. Take for instance Australia – http://www.animalcontrol.com.au/rabbit.htm. Australia as we all know, has banned rabbit importation. And how was this problem solved? As mentioned by wikipedia.org here – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbits_in_Australia, an “accidental” release of the CALICIVIRUS (or fondly known as Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease), wiped out most of the rabbits. This is a deadly virus and can affect both wild and domesticated rabbits.

Let’s take a few steps back and ponder for a moment. If an “accidental” release of this virus here in Malaysia happens, there will no longer be Thunder, Carmel, Haley and whatever named rabbits that we have, those that we hold close to our hearts or even as part of our family. On the surface, it does not seemed to be possible and unlikely to happen. If everyone thinks this way, IT WILL HAPPEN!

If you do not want any rabbits to die in vain, here are some actions that you can take to save a bunny’s life:

  1. EDUCATE – share this piece of article with a fellow friend who is contemplating to get a pet JUST FOR FUN.
  2. DO NOT BUY ON IMPULSE – the year of the Rabbit only last for 1 year, a rabbit live for an average of 4 years. Buy with a clear mind knowing that you can care for the rabbit for at least 4 years!
  3. KNOW WHAT YOU BUY – you must know the source of your pet rabbit to avoid unnecessary death. Most rabbits in the market/pet stores come from farms and mills where diseases are widespread. Buy from home breeders where you can see healthy animals.
  4. SUPPORT ETHICAL BREEDERS – there are many home breeders who shower their pets with lots of love through providing the best environment, food and care to their breeding animals. Supporting them will go a long way because animals produced by them are normally very healthy.
  5. SPOT THE NOT – good breeders will always offer to take an unhealthy rabbit back, is not keen on selling if you are not ready and will insist that it is not an obligation to buy a rabbit from them. They are not hard up for your money.
  6. NEVER RELEASE RABBIT INTO THE WILD OR PUBLIC PLACES – domesticated rabbits cannot fend for themselves against stray cats and dogs. Releasing rabbits in the neighborhood park spells certain death.
  7. NO CARROTS – the proper diet for rabbits is HAY and good quality PELLETS. The general practice of feeding rabbits with carrots and vegetables with high water content e.g. lettuce is WRONG.
  8. ADOPT A RABBIT – there are many rabbits looking for homes. Please do not be fooled by people asking for money on the pretext of offering rabbits for adoption. A sale is a sale. It will be fair to ask for a minimum fee if the person(s) is/are offering a neutered rabbit for adoption (with proof of the procedure and receipt). There are many independent pet rescuers genuinely helping to rehome pets and their cause should be appreciated and supported.
  9. NEUTER YOUR PETS – rabbits can be neutered and in fact, neutering helps with behavioral problem e.g. aggression and territory markings. A neutered rabbit have much better litter habits making them the perfect house pets.
  10. BREED RESPONSIBLY & ETHICALLY – wanting your rabbit to experience the pleasure of sexual intercourse is not a good reason to breed a rabbit. Always breed for a good purpose e.g. improvements of a particular breed. Always make sure you find good homes for your rabbits. Be a responsible and reliable person of great integrity. “Those Who Stand For Nothing, Fall For Anything” – Alexander HamiltonRead more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_wrote_this_quote_If_you_dont_stand_for_something_youll_fall_for_anything#ixzz19mLUTwwa

Please share this post with all friends and family so that we can be aware of the impact of getting a rabbit as pet come Chinese New Year 2011 without thinking of the consequences. Together we can curb pet abandonment and unnecessary sufferings of God’s most misunderstood and defenseless creature – THE RABBIT!

Love,

Tim

Ouch, my crap hole hurts!

As a continuation of my posts entitled, Chopped Hay Is Junk! & Karate Chopped Hay Anyone?, I read that there has been an issue of wasted “unchopped” hay. What I learn from raising pets so far whether it is rabbits or otherwise, is that, creativity is much needed most of the time and problem solving skills come in handy. Two posts has been written and we are still revisiting such a simple topic. Perhaps my writing skills has been proven ineffective. This time around I will try to put the point across in a much (hopefully) effective way. I am also keeping in mind that there are those who are still skeptical and do not believe what I write, for those who appreciate, I am sure you all will love it.

If I remember correctly, one of the most effective ways to remember things is to relate it in some funny ways. Not forgetting the objective of this post that is HOW TO USE HAY EFFICIENTLY, here goes…

(Knock on door)

Me: Yes, can I help you?

Wife: You have been in there for more than an hour, what the hell are you doing?

Me: I need TP (Toilet Paper) for my bunghole!

Wife: You have an entire new roll of it in there!

Me: Give me a minute…

After 2 hours, I have in my hand…

In case you didn't know, this is a toilet roll or toilet paper or TP

After more pushing and pulling, I have this….

With a sore crap hole, I still have so much to finish!

After summoning all my energy and strength, I raised a rather heavy pair of scissor while making sure that I do not pop the piles, with the other hand holding the heavy camera…

It took a lot of effort to come to this point...

To my surprise, I got cute little mini toilet rolls that looks like….

PrecioussSSssSss......The One Ring! I can see elven words inscribed with doodie!

**********CENSORED**********CENSORED**********CENSORED**********

You just need to figure out how the hay got in there...

I gave that to one of my bunnies……

And after a day……

You get CHOPPED HAY!!!!

So the question remains, the hay comes first or chopped hay comes first? Or rather, the toilet paper comes first or the crap comes first?

Good Luck!

Bunny Setup: The Perfect Example

Looking at how things are going, I think I must make it mandatory for those who are interested to get a rabbit from me to follow the following examples.

Many people keep their rabbits in appropriate places and some major excuses include residential house rules prohibit animals in common area. Rabbit can be very clean and without smell if kept properly making them good pets for condo/apartment living.

I am very proud to say that all Tru-Luv rabbits are owned by owners who keep them indoors. Here is the BEST example I can give:

Cage with plastic mats feels comfortable to the feet

A comfortable bunny is a happy bunny!

Attached playpen provided for bonding and run time!

A bunny can be potty trained!

A well loved bunny!

Taking Orders Now!

Dear Bunny Lovers (I presume you did not stumble across my blog by accident),

I am currently planning out for a shipment of rabbits scheduled in March/April 2o1o. I have put much thoughts into this and felt that it would be the best for the rabbit community in Malaysia at large. Most of you have expressed interest in owning fully imported rabbits and this could be the best arrangement to help everyone out!

Most of you are not willing to pay (of course!) but at the same time want imported qualities and also only 1 or 2 rabbits (to try out). So the best thing to do now, is for us share out the shipping cost.

Advantages include:

1. You get cheaper rates compared to shipping alone in small amount

2. Quality & health will be assured as we will help source out with your interest on mind

3. No more outrageous rules & regulations imposed by breeders i.e. only MALES available

4. No more outrageous prices for sub standard rabbits

5. Reliable sources

6. Delivery to your doorstep (Klang Valley)

Procedures:

1. Email me truluvrabbitry@gmail.com (serious inquiries only!)

2. Agree upon budget

3. Sign an agreement (ship at own risk)

4. Pay the amount agreed upon

5. I will source and show photos of rabbits picked

6. You agree on rabbits

7. I get them shipped and deliver them to you!

Disclaimer clause(s):

1. Ship at your own risk

2. Qualities of rabbits commensurate with prices! We work on the “PAY PEANUTS GET MONKEY” basis!

3. Prices of rabbits commensurate with the DISTANCE needed to TRAVEL too!

4. We can help source for good OTHER breeds (i.e.  Netherland Dwarfs, Lionhead, American Fuzzy Lops, Jersey Woollies, Mini Satin, Mini Rex, Californian & etc) too!

5. We can arrange for shipping to countries outside of Malaysia too! Foreign friends please email me!

Now, let’s flood me with emails and more importantly, let’s get GOOD STUFF!

*P.S.: PLEASE EMAIL ME!!! I WILL NOT ENTERTAIN COMMENTS ON THIS POST!

Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (VHD) & Myxomatosis Alert!

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: There is NO occurrences of the above mentioned @ Tru-Luv Rabbitry. I do not want this taken as an opportunity for nasty people to spread wild allegations and rumors so for the record I am just RELAYING information picked up through comments on my blog for the good of all RABBIT OWNERS in MALAYSIA in the good spirit of SHARING!

VHD and Myxomatosis is 2 very deadly viruses that affect rabbits. For more information please go to http://www.rabbit.org/care/vhd.html.

So far, there isn’t any news about an outbreak in Malaysia but I received a comment yesterday by one Ms. Jean (https://truluvrabbitry.com/2009/09/04/malaysian-rabbit-owners-club/#comment-2997) stating that her rabbits are dying one after another without any symptoms.

I am not too sure if the Veterinary Services Department would have any information regarding any outbreaks and if they have the vaccines for it. Sometimes I do understand that rabbits isn’t a top priority for most so it would be difficult to contain if an outbreak occurs. We as pet owners must be self sufficient and share the information to protect our loved ones.

Here are some preventive measures recommended by rabbit.org (taken from http://www.rabbit.org/care/vhd.html):
How to Protect Your Rabbits

  • House your rabbits indoors. We strongly suggest that they be kept indoors, or in enclosed environments. Rabbits who live or exercise outdoors are more at risk for contracting this disease.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling your rabbits, particularly when you come home from places where other rabbits may have been, or where people who have been in contact with rabbits may have been. This would include places such as feed stores, pet stores, fair grounds, humane societies, etc.
  • Change your clothes and wash your hands after handling or coming in contact with rabbits. Wash these clothes twice in hot water before you wear them around your rabbit.
  • If you volunteer at a shelter, then have some special clothes and shoes that you wear only at the shelter. You may want to wear plastic bags over your shoes, secured with a rubber band. When you leave the shelter, remove the bags and dispose of them before you get into your car, making sure not to touch the outside of the bag. Follow clothes laundering instructions above, and shoe disinfecting instructions below. This protects the shelter rabbits as well as your own. The same considerations apply to anyone who sees rabbits at work and also has rabbits at home.
  • Adopt a “no shoes in the house” policy, or keep your bunnies from running in high traffic areas of your home. To disinfect shoes that may have been contaminated, you need to place the shoes in a foot bath that contains one of the following: 10% bleach solution, 2% 1-Stroke Disinfectant, Parvosol, or parvoviricide disinfectant. You may wish to speak with your veterinarian about how to obtain these. The shoes must be in contact with the disinfectant for at least ten minutes. The foot bath is recommended as it is important that during the ten minute disinfection time that the disinfectant remains wet. Merely spraying shoes with disinfectant and leaving them to dry is not effective.
  • Know your sources of hay and feed and if they are near areas of any outbreaks.
  • Minimize insects in your home by installing window and door screens. Eliminate mosquitoes and flies from your home.
  • Quarantine any new rabbit for 5 days. Always handle quarantined rabbits last, and keep all supplies for them separate from your other rabbit’s supplies.
  • To disinfect objects, use one of the disinfectants above, remembering that it must stay in contact with the item and remain wet for at least ten minutes.

UPDATES!

* if you are experiencing sudden death in your rabbits, please contact your State Veterinary Department, for SELANGOR, the contact number is +603-55103900 to inquire if there is an outbreak and get more information from them

I got this reply to the comment made by Ms. Jean from the Director of Rabbit Industry Council. Thank you very much Ms. Pamela Alley:

Hi, Jean–as Director of the Rabbit Industry Council, I’m very interested in hearing more about what you are seeing. What symptoms, how much time between deaths? What are you feeding/watering with? What breeds and what ages are affected?

RVHD is an OIE-reportable disease, so the Veterinary Services should be reacting with a bit more enthusiasm–contact your area’s government veterinary chief and if necessary, their superior in the agriculture and veterinary services.

Don’t let them pass rabbits off as unimportant! This disease (Rabbit Viral Hemorrhagic Disease) is very very nasty and can easily wipe out a majority of rabbits in the area.

The first step is to get a necropsy done by a veterinary service that knows what they are looking for; it is possible that members of the World Rabbit Science Association in your area may be able to help you with that. (Google the WRSA and ask the current president or secretary to help you find contacts near you.)

Some ‘trademarks’ of RVHD:
Deaths occur in animals over 8 weeks of age;
animals that are young may be ill but recover to become carriers for at least 1 month post-infection.
Death is sudden and may be accompanied by a scream and/or bloody discharge from the nose, mouth, eyes, or rear.
Losses are numerous and unaffected by ‘regular’ treatments such as antibiotics.
Necropsy findings include hemorrhagic lungs and liver with a reticulated pattern of hemorrhagic damage.

PLEASE DO NOT VISIT ANY OTHER RABBITRIES until you find out for sure what’s going on, and bleach your tires and shoes before and after going to the feedstore or other areas where others might pick up the virus (if that’s what it is). It is very very tenacious and tough!

Go to http://www.showbunny.com/RVHD/index.html for the full outline of the outbreaks in the early 2000’s in the US; the data there is likely to be quite helpful.

Good luck and please keep me posted!

Save Our Turtles!

There is a need for better ruling and law governing the sale of turtle eggs in Malaysia as the current wildlife protection law against the sale of turtle eggs is inadequate. WWF Malaysia is currently collecting pledge signatures for a petition to the government calling for stricter rules to better protect turtles that come to our shores.

In line with that, the Telur Rangers (Egg Rangers) were formed by 3 very interesting personalities (one of which is a very close friend of mine!). Their goal is to collect 100,000 pledge signatures!

To cut the chase short, visit http://www.saveturtles.my/ to submit your pledge in just 2 minutes.

And visit http://www.telurrangers.blogspot.com/ to read all about what’s going on with the Telur Rangers.
