The Unsung Heroins

If you notice, 9 out of 10 rabbitry websites that you visit, you will only get to see photos of the finest, the prettiest and the many grand champions the breeder has. Ever wonder where all the best came from? You will be surprised how valuable brood does are to rabbit breeders.

They produce many and has got tons of milk to raise kits, brood does seldom get their due credits. The next time you visit a rabbitry website, try to look out for grand champs with their parents listed. Most often than not, you will find the sire to be a grand champion but the dam is an unknown doe.

Brood does are indeed very valuable hosts that bear and raise kits. Most of the time brood does are made up of 2 normal genes. There are high chances that they will bear normals too. But the trade off would be that it is unlikely for them to produce peanuts. This gives you more viable kits in the long run.

Just wanted to dedicate this post to all the unsung heroins in our rabbitries and barn. The true life bearers!

What Does It Really Mean Breeding The Best

We have heard it a million times. Breed closely to the standard of perfection. That is just about a very small percentage of what breeding the best is all about. Breeding closely to the SOP is just in the form of outlook as in how a rabbit should look like on the exterior. Ever wonder about the inside?

Even the famous computer manufacturer would want you to know what’s INSIDE right? That’s why you see the I*tel Inside whenever you purchase a computer. That’s because as nice as the exterior looks, your computer should have the substance to help you browse through Facebook in the speed of light. LOL!

The quality of rabbits do not depend on the type of food given or how well they are groomed or conditioned. Everything lies in GENETICS. With good genetics you get resilient, tough and very healthy rabbits. And how far are we trying to achieve this? You’ll be surprised if I say to the point where the rabbits can be champs eating junk pellets. Yes, that is exactly what good breeders are trying to do. The rabbits should be as good inside out!

There are many diseases that a bunny owner fear. We often hear about the silent killer called G.I. Stasis and others similar deadly problems in our rabbits. These are but a few problems that has not been bred out. I believe very much that well bred rabbits should be free from it should be the priority of breeders to get strong rabbits.

If you think about it, it totally make sense because if you breed something that heavily depends on let’s say a certain brand of food, what happens if the rabbit goes to a place where it is impossible to get hold of the same brand? It will certainly not thrive. Therefore, adaptability must also be a trait breeders strive for in their breeding programme.

It may sound cruel to discard the weak but if we think hard, it is totally necessary. For example, I am sure most of us like our lamb chops in certain texture. If the farm produces lambs with bad flesh, most likely it will cease to exist. And likewise, you wouldn’t be patronizing products from it as well just because you want the farm to continue its operations.

When we start off producing the best, in the long run we get to minimize out input and still maximize the output. That is what it means to breed the best. We minimie in terms of labor attending to sick animals, minimize medication and also the mortality rate. With that, our products are of quality.

With that said, there are may factors to determining quality in everything. We have been emphasizing the importance of Hay in our rabbits’ diet. It is not wise for us to go to the extreme of feeding our rabbits just hay and at the same time, it is also not wise for us to go to the extreme of feeding just pellets as well. But for now, I would like to touch on the topic of hay.

I believe we all know that hay comes in season. They are harvested in different seasons and that determines the quality of the hay as well. Same species of hay planted and harvested at different times may yield different results in terms of quality. It is said that most hay that are harvested during Autumn have the best quality.

So what actually determines the quality of hay and how do we judge as consumers. There are generally 5 determining factors namely time of harvest, the leaf & stem ratio, color of the hay, the smell of the hay and the presence of foreign objects (I once found a huge locust in my bundle of hay). Four out of five points that I have listed above could be ascertain by the consumer. It is quite difficult for us to determine the time of harvest unless we have seen how the hays from different harvest times look like.

Hay with a lot of leafs on thin or fine stems are considered as good hay harvested at good time. I am sure some of us have had the experience of getting a bag of alfalfa filled with thick stems with little leafs.

Fresh hay should be brigh green in color (though some are known to have been dyed). If your hay is light golden yellow, most probably it has been sun bleached and this reduces palatability and carotene. Still, it can be used nonetheless. Dark brown, black and brown hay should be avoided as these may be indication of rain damage or heat damage. Heat damaged hays are brown in color because of microbial (mold) growth. It means that the hay has gone moldy.

The smell of hay is another good indication of its freshness and I am sure this can be easily sensed.

And of course foreign objects can determine the quality of hay. Having poisonous plants in the packet of hay is highly undesirable while getting a locust in the hay may be an indication that it is so good that the locust can’t resist it (no scientific evidence on the latter though and the rest are sheer common sense).

Our rabbits has been domesticated for many years and to emulate their wild cousin in captivity would be something quite ridiculous. Little or more, we should believe in that there could be a slight alteration in their digestive system. And another factor to consider is that, we will never be able to stimulate the natural form of diet in captivity. Thus, we have pellets to balance things up. Pellets are of course made of hay. If you have researched on the way rabbit pellets are made, you should know that basically alfalfa is being grinded into fine powder, added to fillers and more materials to form the pellets. In feeding pellets, we can be sure that our rabbits are able to consume nutrients in a consistent manner unlike being dependant on hays which varies in quality based on the determining factors discussed earlier.

But of course, it is undeniable hay works in more ways than providing nutrients. They also act as roughage and helps in keeping our rabbits’ teeth short through the chewing process.

Coming back to the point of breeding the best, what I can say is that, the food does not and should not make the rabbits but, it matters what the rabbits make out of the food.

Lastly, I would like to share with you a story told to me by a dear friend I call Keat. It was told to him by a farmer.

Once upon a time, there was a shepherd with his flock of sheep. One of his newborn lamb is not doing well. He can hardly walk and his mama sheep rejects him. So old shepherd gave it a shot of whiskey. Sure enough, the lamb got stronger. The shepherd didn’t mind cos he now has a drinking buddy. Come time for slaughter, that weak lamb is not the biggest & the friendliest. So he survived the trip to the stockyard. Next year, all the lambs are sired by this handsome ram.

Shepherd now realized, he got nothing but a whole flock of whiskey drinking sheep. So, moral of the story….

We all have whiskey lamb for dinner! LOL…

That was my version of the moral to the story.

The real moral of the story is, the shepherd has bred weak genetics into his flock. They can’t survive without Whiskey!

And how true it is…

Variety of LIFE

All around us, we see so many colors, different faces and a great deal of abundances. As I went through the children section in the bookstore last evening, I found this wonderful book simply entitled “Wildlife Atlas: A complete guide to animals and their habitats” by John Farndon. In the introduction section, John Farndon’s first sentence were “Perhaps uniquely in the universe, our planet teems with life”. In that sentence alone, I could relate to Mr. Farndon right away and I could not agree more.

The cover

The cover

As you can see, I was going through the children section to find something interesting for my little baby. I like the children section because it is where innocence and creativity can be found most. I find myself going through less complicated materials and it brings me back to the basics. I found this book very interesting because the author has carefully included very accurate and detailed information of animals and their habitats accompanied by very nice illustrations of them too. I then asked my wife what she thinks about it and how our little 21 months old daughter would like it. She said bluntly that Beth may take another 2 years or so to understand it. I made up my mind right away that I have got to get this book. Why?

I told my wife that, based on her response, I felt that it has become mandatory for me to get this book. It is very simple. In another 2 years time there would be a new edition of this book and Beth would only be able to see 50% of what the author has written thus far. You see, in another 2 years time, it would be quite possible that half the species featured in this book may well be extinct. And the reason I must get this book is because, in the next 2 years when my daughter is able to understand, I would like her to know how abundant our earth was 2 years ago when I bought this book.

The book writes about how each species is important to the larger ecosystem and each species has a role to play in our planet. I guess the greatest role and responsibility lies in the hands of us, humans. We have seen documentary after documentary telling us about 1 thing – Global Warming. At this very moment, I must say that we are experiencing the warmest temperature for the longest time thus far. I am personally feeling the heat in the heart of urban Klang Valley. And if you ask me, without a doubt, it bothers me very much.

I believe very much that though very different we are as individuals, like every species of animal, we have a role to play. We could do our very little and collectively contribute a great deal in the larger picture. For the past months, I have seen a great deal of variety of ways people raise rabbits. We have the politically corrects who are quick to jump on their wits when rabbits were abused or used as delicacies to breeders culling for perfections and farmers raising rabbits for food. At each different spectrum, every individual have their own stands and judgments. If you think about it, even in rabbits, there could be so many varieties and this is but a small part of how multi faceted our lives are. Taking away the varieties could mean a life less colorful.

And then we have road users who love to throw bottles out of their car windows and dog owners that do not pick up after their dogs. Well, it takes a lot to make a civic minded community. Our lives still go on as much we hate the fact that there are people with different ideologies around us. As long as we do not impose our ideologies into another, I believe our lives are otherwise peaceful.

What I really trying to say here is that, we could always move forward to make our lives and our earth a better place no matter how different we are. We just need to do certain things in different ways to achieve the same objectives. There are more than 1 way to recycle a bottle as long as we do not throw it out of the window while we’re driving. There could be more than 1 way we could pick up after our dogs as long we do it. There is definitely more than 1 way to keep our rabbits healthy as long we do it.

We could save our planet we call home as long as we reduce, reuse and recycle.

Or else there could be more than 1 way how we leave this planet – we starve, we suffocate or we melt to death?

It’s Summer All Year Round

The effects of global warming is indeed taking a toll on us. It has been well over 30 degrees celsius or above 86 degrees fahrenheit constantly for the past few days with occasionally rain.

We humans have been feeling the heat and what more the bunnies. Thank goodness they are kept in the coolest place in the house and with a fan of course!

Holland Lops should never be place outdoors in Malaysia. They just can’t handle the heat that well.

I hope it rains non-stop again…

A Trip Down To Singapore

Singapore

Singapore

I bet most of you did not even realize my absence last week. I went on a trip down to Singapore. Personally, I did not enjoy it very much because I would prefer somewhere greener. Singapore as we know is a concrete jungle. Very urban that is.

I have heard a lot about Singapore especially the pet industry. I was under the impression that the pet industry is huge beyond imagination since there were comparisons made that Malaysia did not have half of what they have for our pets. I did not have the time to go on a full scale exploration but enough to help me conclude that Malaysia is not that far behind in terms of the pet industry.

It was pretty obvious that the biggest pet chain store in Singapore is the Pet Lover Center. On the busy town center along Orchard Road itself they have 3 outlets. Some of their outlets do not carry live stocks and just pet supplies which in my opinion is good for the pet industry in the long run since there is a stigmata of pet shops selling below average pets.

One of the days, I took a little time to travel down to Serangoon North Ave 2 where many “Petaling Street” style pet shops are nestled among the HDB Flats. I was told that things are cheap at this place. True enough, they do look a lot like those pet shops in Petaling Street just that the products they carry are much higher in quality.

Took me a good 30 mins to find this place

Since I was at the area, I thought of dropping by THE place to visit for Chinchilla fans. This place called House Of Chinchillas. The varieties that they have is amazing and the staff there are so friendly. Although a small shop, the number of Chinchillas in there could really give you a surprise. There is a chin at every corner.

They do have a couple of rabbits there too. I saw a lop and a couple of Netherland Dwarfs.

As I was about to leave the place, something made me walk a little more to see if there are more shops. And I found this cool shop but I forgot to take a good look at its name. Actually, the amount of goods here blocked off the shop’s name. LOL

This shop has got a lot of pet accessories and I was very impressed with their range of products. Then I got quite a surprise when I turned around and saw this Tri-Color lop bunny.

After this I was well on my way back. I saw a shop filled with all sorts of parrots. I was not allowed to take photos unfortunately.

And off I went to blog somewhere else.

If you ask me what I like most in Singapore, I would definitely say NOT THE FOOD. LOL! Well, anywhere with a good pet industry is good enough for me because that is what I lookout for most of the time in a new place. I learned on my last day in Singapore that I have missed out this place called Pet Village near Suntec City. Oh well, maybe next time.

But I did not miss the must visit NIGHT SAFARI. I was there on time for their renown Night Creature show too. That’s all about what I enjoyed most in Singapore.

Think Holland Lops, Think Ugly Duckling

When I wrote “Why I Love Holland Lops”, I did say that Holland Lops look cuter as they age. One classic example I want to show is this buck bred by the Jordans called Jordan’s Captain. Just look at the photo of him as a Junior and how far he has come to be a beautiful buck in the end. Holland Lops are definitely like boxes of chocolates. You will never know what you will get out of something that seemed to be an ugly duckling at first. Therefore, never loose hope before 6 months with your rabbit. LOL! Do also bear in mind that not all ugly ducklings turn into beautiful swans. Most remain as ugly all their lives but that does not give us reasons to believe they make lousy pets.

What caught my attention to look for Jordans’ website is that, I got news that they won BOS at Nationals last weekend with Jordan’s Ashton (if my assumption is correct) as Broken Siamese Sable buck. Jordan’s Ashton is the buck listed next to Jordan’s Captain. Absolutely stunning.

Congratulations to the Jordans for the win! Another Top Lop 2009!

Brain Move You OR You Move Brain?

This is a very important post for indecisive people. It is a very good post for people without brain of their own too. I hope it is going to be a good post to give brainless people what they need most, to get their brains back to where it suppose to be. Though I wonder how they loose their brains in the first place.

When the market is saturated by so many products and so many parties selling those products, everyone loses FOCUS!

Some of us know what is best for our pets and therefore, searches for places to get the best things for our pets. This truly show how much we love our pets and how well we are intuned with their needs. We may go out of our ways to just for our pets. Imagine all the inconveniences involved.

I believe the problems arise when we take the easy way out. Some of us are downright not bothered to know what our pets need. So what they do? FOLLOW BLINDLY. This is very similar to how people pick their favorites. Some people do not even know why they like a certain football team. The next time you see someone wearing the red jersey with a logo that has got a devil on it, try asking the reason he/she likes that team. I bet quite a few of them will give you the most outrageous answers. The exact reason that usually ticks me off is when he/she says, “because all my friends like it, so I like them too”. Totally bullshit and utter nonsense.

In my opinion the world would be a better and challenging place if all of us have our own brains that does what they do best, THINK! We can be better without the herding mentality. For those that are not familiar with the herding mentality, just think of the buffaloes in the padi fields that are pulled by their nose rings. If you feel like one of those buffaloes, most likely you’re trapped in the herding mentality. I hope you wake up and I believe you are being liberated since you’re reading this.

Anyone including myself can write all sorts of recommendations. That makes it easy for anyone reading to have a good head start to research on the best recommendations that suits them. At the end of the day, each one will have to exercise their discretion before acting out on their beliefs.

What works best for me does not necessarily means it works best for EVERYONE. We all do our best to provide the best if we believe our pets worth something to us. And we choose what fits our lifestyles the best.

Pets are not like your techie gadget that should be taken as a moving fad or trend. A techie gadget may get obsolete in just a few months but your pets live for years. Let’s not just jump into the bandwagon just because everyone’s going into it.

Have your own brain to decide for yourself. Likewise the pet stores that you patronize.

And that brings me to the point of my post today. I recently heard of the most outrageous thing that I have ever come across thus far. There are actually people in this world questioning the reason certain pet stores selling stuff they know nearly nothing about.

Now we all know pet stores are businesses that exist due to the demand of customers. Customers with brain has decided that they need certain products and services. As the fundamentals of all businesses are based on the demand and supply model, pet stores are merely trying to meet the demands of customers. Not necessarily the pet store operators need to have extensive knowledge of the products and at the same time, we cannot take it against them for not knowing either although knowing can be a bonus to help in awareness. Furthermore, if there is no demand for a particular product, the manufacturers would not produce them right? Likewise, pet owners DO NOT buy everything under the sun unless they are filthy rich and has got nowhere else to spend their riches. There is always a line between WANT and NEED here too. At the end of the day, consumer decides based on their NEEDS regardless of what is recommended. There is no such thing as misleading or crap like that. Consumer have the money and power to decide. But if you are still hard headed and still want to believe in the misleading crap, then sue all manufacturers so that no more products sold in pet stores, we’ll have nothing to buy for our pets and you should know what happens next (THINK)!

We have to stay focus on the reason as to why pet stores exist. A pet store is not a place where you find for your regular lingerie or your favorite instant noodles. A pet store sells PET PRODUCTS! If they do not, I don’t think they are called pet stores. So stop questioning why they carry certain product just because they have no knowledge on it. If you know more about the product, good for you and many more should know about it and DECIDE if they NEED it!

YES, this seemed to be very contradicting coming from me. That is because I believe we should stop spoon feeding so that everyone uses their brains to think. Think for themselves that is. That is because the herding mentality is causing too much problem in the pet business world. Too many blind followers with a few blind leaders.

And also, as our market provider stays ignorant, consumers are still required to exercise their own discretion to decide. Since that is the way it has always been and still is, the best thing to do is to depend on our own God given natural talent which is to………THINK FOR OURSELVES!

Thus, your brain moves you or you move your brain?

As for my fellow rabbit lovers, if you still believe in my recommendations, please continue following for the best of all rabbits as should know by now that TLR is all about the best for our rabbits! You are welcome to combine your brains with mine. LOL!

The Cult Called Pets

Many people sacrifices a lot for pets. So much so that they become obsessed. To treat one’s pet well is a very good thing. But to be over obsessed with one’s pet business is definitely weird. We have tons of pet stores and retails in Malaysia. Some are online businesses and some have their own operating premises. All of these stores have their fans. I realized some have gone over religious about their idol store.

Today I received a very nasty comment on one of the post I did for Noobie that went as follows:

Classy as in what then? Care to tell more?

J & J in LYN are far more concerned to pets’ wellbeings, more than the PROFIT some Chinchilla owner claim to earn by his knowlegde OR is it from stealing other people’s idea??

Ask urself, have u heard from both party? DUMBASS!!

So any comment then?

Don’t you think that this is so darn rude? But anyhow, I learn many things from this comment. And here is what I think:

1. The commenter has low EQ

2. He/she hates Chinchillas (I don’t know why someone can hate them so much as they are super cute)

3. He/she is religiously and fanatically in love with the alphabet J, the character & and the alphabet J. Collectively known as J&J

4. He/she loves calling people names

As you can see, certain religions have restrictions and for this person, his or her religion forbids anyone from writing about J&J and the one that particularly includes LYN. So my dear fellow bloggers, please refrain from using J&J and LYN in your posting.

And for the record, the other J&J I know beside the one that took in Noobie are good friends of mine who resides in Melbourne. And the other J&J I know work very hard to build their business. And by these people coming and leaving rude remarks on my blog, they are helping the J&J that they are so religiously in love with lose their business by tons. If theirs is a “gangster-style” business, I am keeping my distance whoever J&J that he/she is referring to!

Lastly, I think all religion teaches us to be good. Let’s not make Pets a cult alright? It is not worth it. Mind your own fur biz please….

Why I Love Holland Lops?

After a while raising Holland Lops, I found this to be the hardest question to answer. Such a simple question and yet, it always get me dumbstruck for words. I figured that today, I must get this question answered and answer it well.

First of all, I am always attracted to animals with flat face. As you might have guessed it right from that, I love bulldogs. Yes, I fancy dog breeds with flat faces like Bulldogs, Boxers, Pekingeses and Shih tzus.  I also like flat faced cats such as the Persians and Exotic Shorthairs. I nearly got myself a very cute Exotic Shorthair cat that looked exactly like Garfield a few year ago but I thought it would be too much hassle to keep one. I am not too sure about what made me like flat face animals but I just adore them. Maybe it is because the flat face gives them the cute look?

I don’t really like to mention the word cute because cuteness will never last. But with the Holland Lop, I dare say that cuteness comes with age. Do you notice that Holland Lops only get cuter as they grow older? Yes! That is exactly the reason why I love them. Because they get cuter and that means my love for them will keep on growing instead of diminishing over time like other baby pets that outgrow their cuteness.

I felt that the Holland Lop fits my lifestyle best. Since I like Bulldogs but cannot afford to have one barking mad at home, I prefer a silent Bulldog. What is more appropriate compared to the Bulldoggish Holland Lops? With those droopy ears and chubby cheeks, the Holland Lops are the perfect Bulldogs for me.

Every rabbit have their unique personalities and the Holland Lops have a great exponential of personalities. Their personalities truly shows through their cute antics and behaviors. For example, as we all know, Carmel is quite a seasoned show bunny. I am still very intrigued by the fact that she loves to pose and the best part of it is, her eyes will follow the camera wherever you move it. LOL!

The second reason why I chose Holland Lops was because of the many challenges that comes together with raising them. My wife is still puzzled as to why I bother putting myself through all the hassles of raising Holland Lops. I really love the challenges because they teach me new things all the time. One of my good breeder friends told me that Holland Lop breeders can be more knowledgeable compared to vets. I couldn’t agree more as some of my breeder friends administer injections and IV drips on their own. I have an aspiration to be a vet since I was very young but unfortunately, my academic results was not good enough to be given the oppportunity. I totally hated that fact because in my opinion, every individual learn differently and to be judged generically is not fair at all. Oh well, nothing can stop me if I have the will. Besides, raising Holland Lops allowed me to know only the parts of Veterinary Science that interest me most. Also, I don’t need to put myself through the hardcore technicalities too. LOL!

Lastly, I cannot find myself not having any pets in my life. They have definitely taught me how to look after another living being better. They have thought me love. And this beautiful hobby also comes together with amazing people, those I love to call friends. And just like a hobby, you can be very selective with friends. I love those that love me for who I am and most of all, those that love their pets!
