3 Weeks Old BIS & Grand Champion Winner Anyone?

Many breeders start selling their rabbits when they are 8 weeks old and on the other hand, buyers nowadays are fast learning to use bunny language, terms and lingo. But when both these situations collide, we do have a slight problem.

I am not sure how other breeders react to the question “Are they show or brood quality?”

I must say that this is a irrelevant question when it comes to buying a young rabbit. No one can guarantee if the rabbit at 8 weeks would turn out to be Show Quality or even winning material for the matter. I for one will never ever guarantee my 8 weeks old are show materials. I can see the potential but can never guarantee a 100% show quality.

In many incidents, I found that buyers can only relate the term “Show Quality” to the little chubby “bulldog”ish look in a Holland Lop and at the same time disregarding the Standard of Perfection altogether. They are not aware of the Standard of Perfection at all and as long as the little bunny is chubby and cute, anything goes. The term “Show Quality” is merely used as a search criteria just like how we enter keywords into Google for a quick search. It has lost all its meaning and weight.

As a friend commented on this subject, “even a show quality rabbit that is not well taken care of can turn out to be a pet quality rabbit”. I go a step further to say that even if it is a show quality animal, it is very subjective whether if it gets thrown off the show tables first or stay on and claim its Best of Breed title.

I have learned that this hobby is extremely dynamic and subjective. And like how my mentor puts it, we should breed according to the Standard of Perfection and also, “BREED FOR WHAT I LIKE”.

But just for the fun of it and throwing in a little humor into the subject, I would like to say that every 3 or 4 weeks old Holland Lop deserves the BIS title.

Let me tell you why with the photos below:

Perfect at 3 weeks?

The truth of the matter is, you can never be sure until the rabbit is at least 4 months old.

BUT, this should not be taken as an excuse to sell rabbits at 8 weeks and saying, “It’s hard to tell at 8 weeks”. There is a keyword called “Potential” and I shall leave that up to the breeder who you are buying the young rabbit from to explain further why he/she thinks the rabbit(s) in question have the potential.

Good luck in your search!

True Love’s A Gift

Stumbled across another song that mentions “true love” and this time by 2 of my favorite artistes of all time – Mariah Carey & Ne-Yo.

Seoul Searching

Anyong-haseyo everyone, how are you doing?

I am sure that when you see or hear someone greeting in a different language, you can roughly guess where that person has been. That is also the reason why I have not been updating my weblog lately, life is really really hectic for me. I am really glad that all the bunnies are very well taken care of and I do miss them very dearly.

A beautiful place

The land of Gimchi is so beautiful, enchanting and at times romantic. A culture that is rooted so deep and if only I knew the language, my stay here could have been much better.

And so as most of you have also guessed, what will bunny man do without bunnies? Hmmm, that didn’t sound quite right but I am sure you know what I mean (Don’t think too much!). Again, what will bunny man do without being around his Holland Lops? Go looking for bunnies that is!

After going through some write ups about pets in Korea, I safely conclude that keeping pets is not really a huge thing over here but I did saw a family from Japan with a little long haired Dachshund,  a pretty lady walking her Poodle on the street, a couple more mongrels and a few Animal Medical Centers. Apparently, there is a street that is called Chungmuro Pet Street with over 20 pet shops and veterinary practices. I did not have the time to go there though but the information I gathered was that they cater more for dog and cat lovers. Given the odds, I felt that it was pretty hard for bunny man to find a rabbit here.

While I was making a tour of its famous landmarks, all I could see was bunny articles like musical box, bags and wooden sculptures.

A little cute spinning bunny musical box

Bunny bag

It does feel crowded for a bunny man searching for just one bunny in the midst of all the other types of pets - A wooden bunny

The last day of my stay here soon approached and I wondered if I will be able to see at least one rabbit before I leave. I was not expecting to see a Holland Lop or any funky breeds but at least, just for the fun of it, I wish to see an ordinary rabbit. For the rest of the day, I did not think much about it. After dinner, I went for a little walk around the hotel vicinity and found this cool place called Junk Art Park. It is a park filled with sculptures made out of scrap metals and materials. I found this place rather interesting and as usual, started snapping a lot of photos.

A pair of penguin looking sculptures

As I turned from taking the above picture, and from the corner of my eye, I saw something moved!

A beautiful grey bunny. Running free and wild...

LO AND BEHOLD, a rabbit right in front of me! I was dumbstruck and couldn’t make a move. Before I could click on the camera, it ran and took cover under a jeep parked nearby. I waited patiently for it to come out from underneath the vehicle and it must have been my camera that made it so afraid of me. I was satisfied nonetheless that I finally caught a glimpse of a rabbit here in Korea.

A rabbit appearing in the strangest of places and when I least expected to appear tells me something pretty profound. Some call it fate, others may call it destiny but I would like to call it, God’s little SURPRISE for me.

Happy weekend everyone and everybun!

Backdrop Goreng Garang

Beyonce have a stage name or what she calls alter ego. Sacha Fierce? Like an average person, I do have a liking for beautiful things. If you have not already notice, I like capturing photographs of my rabbits and most of the time with interesting backdrops. After yesterday’s photography session, I went into a backdrop rampage.

If I have an alter ego for this rage for backdrop it would be “Backdrop Goreng Garang” or simply translated means “Fierce Backdrop Fryer” – ROFL. Sheer nonsense I know…

Let’s see what I have been frying up today. Poor little Miracle became my camwhore but he was such a good boy that knew what was required of him. Got the job done in a few minutes.

When My Fur Grows

Pixie Blu slowly coming into her own...

Time can make a lot of difference to a young rabbit. Time can either break or make the good looks in youngsters between 6 weeks to 5 months. They are different from week to week and that proved my point that most are attracted to rabbits at 4 weeks (under age) and show less liking for 8 week olds. But if you do wait a little longer, you will start to see some amazing results.

But bear in mind that genetics still play a great role here. What I just mentioned should not be taken literally and discretion while obtaining good stocks must be exercised.

I posted photos of Mighty Joe and Nessie last week. Let’s see after just one week, how much they have developed:

Mighty Joe living up to his name...

Nessie, don't you just love her?

Out Goes The Rabbit, Dragon Is the Next Best Thing!

One thing that I can never forget about primary/middle school was the pressure of being accepted by the majority. One of the ways to stay acceptable was keeping up with the never ending fads. One year it was Badminton (when Malaysia won the Thomas Cup) then came football (World Cup), YO-YO, Transformers toy, Dragon Ball Z, New Kids On The Block, The Four Heavenly Kings (Aaron Kwok, Leon Lai, Andy Lau & Jackie Cheung) and the list goes on and on…

There’s one year, I really pity the parents because every kid seemed to have the same hairstyle of the favourite singer at that time to a point that it was so difficult to recognize their own child. Another year, parents have to dig deep into their pockets to purchase ADIDAS Predator boots because it was the IN thing at that time and our football team seemed to be sponsored by ADIDAS.

I do not understand all these until a couple of years back by reading a book by one of the biggest music mogul of our time. In the book, the author wrote about how artistes are “packaged” and getting the best marketing team to stir up a huge hype so that album sales would be chart topping.

Through all these passing fads, I tend to wonder who started it all, who is the TREND SETTER to be exact. What does it take to be the chart topping TREND? When one choose to follow the bandwagon, there are more losers than winners. Winners are always staying ahead while “losers” gets exhausted following.

All I know is, being the natural rebel that I am, I was always the odd one out because I refuse to be following nonsensical trends. When my friends were busy stepping on the gas peddle of their cars, I was busy listening to my favourite R&B Hip Hop album on the public bus. When most of friends were busy cheering for a particular soccer team at the mamak stalls, I am usually busy breeding Holland Lop rabbits.

Jokes aside, how much more can the Holland Lop rabbit not be consistent to the standard of perfection? How much more should the Beagle dog change in its appearance? Have you ever feel like when you finally found the answers, they just change the questions? The fact is, the Standard of Perfection is renewed every 5 years with minor or major changes to the breed standards of each breed. So how should we as Show Breeders stay consistent to the breed standards? Do you feel stupid trailing behind without anyone noticing that beautiful animal you have in that barn of yours?

The truth lies in one word, INTERPRETATIONS.

If I give you a word, GOOD, how do you define and interpret this word? What makes GOOD, good? How good is GOOD? How can it be GOOD? What does it take to be GOOD?

Each of us have our own preferences and a mind of our own (I hope). We like certain colours, certain style in something we like or even certain shapes or sizes. The best thing to do is NOT do it just because someone else is or say it should be done. The best thing to do is, not fall prey to cleverly crafted marketing gimmick.

If I tell the world today that one of the Holland Lop rabbits have the tendency of pooping GOLD, what do you think will happen? When the logic circuit in us malfunctions, it is extremely dangerous. We will lose all sense of decision making capabilities and what happens? We just follow blindly. Don’t be fooled by the passing fad, the self proclaimed “Trend Setters” are looting your resources. And all around these false “Trend Setters” are the opportunists trying to share a piece of the cake.

I am offering you a solution here. You MUST work towards your own interpretations. BREED FOR WHAT YOU LIKE AND MAKE YOUR OWN!!! That is exactly what a real Trend Setter would do!

Just think about it…

What Can Your Children Learn

As we all know, there are now 2 sides to this rabbit hobby namely Just For Pets and Rabbit Showing. For the adults or in the OPEN it can be extremely competitive among serious breeders and it got me thinking what will the youth or young children learn from this wonderful hobby. Here’s my take on this topic:

Sense of responsibility

Having pet rabbits as a hobby does teach our children to be responsible for another living being. It also teaches them discipline as their pets must be watered and fed on a fixed routine. They have the opportunity to watch and learn the life cycle of a pet from young till death. There are many things that they will learn from keeping a pet healthy at all time.

Social skills

When they get into the Rabbit Showing sport, they will be introduced to other children their and also with the same hobby. They will learn how to socialize and at times learn how to be tactful in handling emotions of other children. As children always learn from their elders, we just have to be careful and to ensure they do not get entangled in the adult world. When they are good at honing social skills, that will help them handle human interaction issues better.

To be honest, having pet rabbits on its own is far more less damaging than having children in the showing sports. Introducing them to the showing sports would mean introducing dynamics and complexity into the hobby for them. Yes, he or she may not be in the run to win it but it does not mean someone he or she knows isn’t as well. And it all really depends on how much you want to protect your children.

The reason why I am writing this is because, I was able to see for myself the heartache in a child when he/she did not do well with his/her rabbit. The disappointment that shows on the face really tears my heart and that is something I will definitely not forget the next time I ever organize any rabbit competition.

The show arena is definitely somewhere to toughen up your kids!

Lessons from the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a must watch in my opinion. I really enjoyed the show and the messages were very clear and I would like to take some time to write about my thoughts of these messages. Comparing this one with all the previous versions, I really think that the story line and the entire setting of the movie was far more realistic without monkeys in space suits. This one’s more reasonable in theory.

Here are the messages I took home after watching this interesting movie:

1. Animals are always misunderstood

Carrots are rabbits’ staple food is enough to describe this point. Nature has got its way of telling us something but we are always too preoccupied to observe and be sensitive to these subtle nudges. We tend to impose our human needs unto animals forgetting to let nature take its course. Although the ecosystem and organisms are very diverse and complex, each has its part to play and collectively make this planet what it is. In the wild nature cleans up the weak and make way for the strong to survive and proliferate. Unfortunately, many a times human try to intervene based on their emotions. We place our feelings before us and try to save what is not meant to be saved because we failed to understand and forget how nature works. In the movie, all the apes wanted was to be free and be in a place where they belong – the forest.

2. Human should never play God

Extending from the previous point, as humans we have been blessed with intelligence far greater than any other organisms on this planet and by having intelligence, we rule over all other organisms. We domesticate animals and even breed them in captivity thinking it would be best for the species. Conservation is good but it would be better without us damaging the earth and using conservation as damage control. All the apes wanted was to get to the other side of the bridge to where the forest is. Seemed like too much to ask?

3. Humans are always dramatic, over reacts and over exaggerating

When the apes started acting unruly (to fight for freedom & to be where they belong), the humans started using firearms on them. Blocking off both ends of the bridge in the effort of stopping the apes from crossing the bridge. It does not make sense and seemed silly to me that they do not allow the apes to get to their destination. It seemed pointless what they were doing. So as you can see, the apes were merely acting upon their instinct while the humans over reacted.

As you can see, the humans really can stir up some major drama (stupid monkey!). A drama huge enough for a MAJOR BLOCKBUSTER! I absolutely enjoyed the movie and I believe everyone should watch it!
