Let’s get the club going!!!

Just want to thank Ken for inspiring me on this. Thanks for reading my posts and reaching out to me in this treacherous journey fighting for the cause of Quality. You are right that it will be hard to fight alone and suggested a club to be filled with people who are passionate and enthusiastic about RABBITS!

I didn’t know my posts for the past few days sounded depressing but it is true. I was unhappy until I figured out the new Sales Policy. Right after posting it, I was so relieved as I have found a long term solution best for TLR, the breed and the community at large. Thanks to Ken again for his wonderful sharing. He is also making a difference and also making waves in the CAT industry. One of the best Maine Coon breeders in Malaysia. Check his work out at http://ice-coon.com/. You can see almost the entire policy is an adaptation from this website. I met Ken through Alicia of Pet Epicure. Great peeps!

Here goes, the club will not be a success without you PASSIONATE & ENTHUSIASTIC people. A club need not to be registered. Let’s start taking baby steps so we can start running soon.

Please join this Facebook group. We shall organize some stuff to enjoy the company and bunnies. Who knows we might even start a little show for all rabbits regardless of pure or mixed breeds.

A new Sales Policy

After much considerations, I have review the previous policies and found there was a lot of room for improvements. And in-line with the general public’s behaviour observed thus far, it was concluded that spaying and neutering is the only way to go similarly as to how they should deal with serial rapists as well.

Basically, TLR will be feeding your rabbit till he/she is 6 months old, send it for spaying/neutering before delivering to you. If you don’t buy that, I don’t know what you will…

So please go through the new sales policy and let me know if I have the support of all Malaysians. Let us gear towards a market filled with Quality Holland Lops!

Let’s put everything into perspective

This post is a revisit to my post regarding culling. I believe many people found it hard to digest and accept what was being introduced. Some may have also jumped into conclusion at some point.

Before I go in the details of my post, there was a question that goes “Why breed when culling is needed?” I believe many people would agree that if there is a need to cull, breeders should stop breeding. I hope this post can shed some light in an attempt to answer the above question.

I have given much thought to this topic but I have not take to killing any of my rabbits. Let’s talk about QUALITY. I am not sure about you but to a certain extend, the NO KILL mentality has caused overpopulation of pets. We are compassionate beings without a doubt but like the title of this post, let’s put everything into perspective.

Do you know that majority of us rabbit owners is keeping or has kept culled rabbits? The word cull can be use very loosely. A pet quality rabbit can also be considered as a cull. If you do not mind sub standard or the quality of rabbits than this post may not be relevant to you. But do keep in mind that we all deserve better things. Being a purebreed rabbit breeder, I emphasize and ensure that my rabbits reflect the standard of perfection laid down by ARBA. They may not be in perfect standard but we all do try as breeders to ensure the rabbits we produce get nearer each time we breed.

Alright, let’s first put ourselves in this NO KILL mentality. So none of the breeders are culling their rabbits. Just imagine how many low quality rabbit we would have around us. Maybe that’s what you want but that’s definitely not what I want.

Somehow, the general public is telling me that they love sub standard rabbits. I do not blame them because a rabbit is just a rabbit after all. They all look the same because many people do not know that there is such thing called BREED STANDARDS.

So with the NO KILLING mentality, I pass down some of my pet quality to some new owners. Some end up breeding their rabbits and inject more sub standard rabbits in the market. What do you think? Everyone’s happy with their sub standard rabbits. No issue. And then the entire market snowballs into a giant burrow with all sub standard rabbits. Well, isn’t that what you’re asking for? And that’s what you are going to get.

In case I have forgotten, many of us are self proclaimed animal rights activist. But as of late, I feel that there should be less of protests and more of actual work being done to save animals instead. A lot of these activist just can’t walk the talk if you know what I mean. If you are such a righteous person, why not take in all the rabbits that could not be sold in the pet stores or farm? I am sure it is not in your capacity to do that right? And of course, you would like to have that rabbit with certain color or features. See, that’s not that genuine and sincere isn’t it? We have to accept that we cannot have the best of both worlds. It is either quality or junk.

And now, let us switch our minds to breeders that cull their rabbits. Unless you are still living in the stone age, you should know that the world is all about the survival of the fittest. The weakest links are always eliminated. We so love the TV series Survivor because we love seeing who outlast others. The weakest Zebra in the Savannah will always be eaten by the Lions. That is the same with culling. We remove the weakest links in our herd. A good breeder will never ever pass something bad to another breeder or owner. He/she will ensure at his/her end that he/she will do anything it takes to get rid of the bad and weak. If he/she does not do that, just imagine rabbits with genetic problems being passed on to others and that trait will eventually replicate far and wide in the speed of light (it only takes below 5 seconds for a pair of rabbits to mate). Although I have not yet decided if to cull my rabbits or not, I believe it is the best thing to do if we want to ensure that only good stuff are being passed down.

Just to quote an article well written by a renown ARBA judge Chris Zemny, “The most important thing one must realize when breeding Holland Lops is that CULLING is a must” that could be found on the very first line of her article contributed for HLRSC official website. Click here for the article. Culling is not something created by TLR. It is a practice observed by many renown breeders in the world.

Let’s make this entire post simple. Just tell me if you want me to pass you junk or something of superior quality. Here’s a poll for you. Now we need to walk the talk. Just tell me if you like having junks or you think you deserve better.

Maybe you want to tell me that we could live with junks as long as there is no killings. But cull not necessary means kill. Let’s put everything into perspective.

Showing Holland Lops

Out of interest, I have always follow Holland Lop shows in the US. I find it very interesting to know. Although I am not yet an expert in this field of showing rabbits (no practical experiences as yet), I will try to discuss what I know to the best of my knowledge.

The order of judging is Solid before Broken, Senior before Junior and Buck before Doe.

The show for Holland Lops starts off with 8 groups as listed below (in judging order):

1 ) Solid Senior Buck (SSB)

2 ) Solid Junior Buck (SJB)

3 ) Solid Senior Doe (SSD)

4 ) Solid Junior Doe (SJD)

5 ) Broken Senior Buck (BSB – not Backstreet Boys okie!?)

6 ) Broken Junior Buck (BJB)

7 ) Broken Senior Doe (BSD)

8 ) Broken Junior Doe (BJD)

In each group after they are judged, the best from each group will be called Group Winners.

The 8 (4 solids & 4 brokens) Group Winners then compete to get Best Of Group/Variety (if I am not wrong) and Best Opposite Sex of Group. There will only be 2 Best of Group rabbits one coming from Solid and Broken. And 2 Best Opposite Sex of Group rabbits again one coming from Solid and Broken. Only the 2 Best of Group &  2 Best Opposite Sex of Group will go on to compete for Best of Breed (BOB) & Best Opposite Sex (BOS).

For example, if out of the Class Winners, a Solid Senior Buck won Best of Group in Solids and a Broken Senior Buck won Best of Group in Broken, any one of them winning BOB would mean that their opposite sex rabbits will be chosen for BOS.

Rabbit shows normally have many breeds and all the BEST OF BREEDS will come together to compete for BEST IN SHOW (BIS) and also BEST RESERVE IN SHOW (BRIS).

Then how do your rabbit get Grand Champion?

It take 3 GC legs from 3 shows under at least 2 different judges to grand your rabbit. GC legs can be awarded starting to Class Winners. So it is not surprising if a rabbit can earn a few legs in a show. Rabbits with junior legs must have at least 1 senior leg to grand.

But there is a clause to awarding the GC legs. The requirements are that there should be at least 5 rabbits competing and at least 3 breeders represented. For example, 5 rabbits should be competing in the Solid Senior Buck category and they should be owned by at least 3 breeders. So the winner of this category will be able to earn a GC leg.

Important procedures before showing a rabbit:

The main reason that one shows his/her rabbits is to obtain a Grand Champions status. In order to grand a rabbit, the breeder will want to get it registered. The Registrar is the person that helps breeders in registering their rabbits. A registrar must register your rabbit by tattoing its right ear. These registrars are registered under ARBA and they will go through your rabbits physically to ensure that they do not have any disqualification. The rabbits that you desire to get registered must have a complete pedigree stating 3 GENERATIONS of rabbits (yes, all the way up to Great Grandparents).

So now you see why a PEDIGREE document is so important when you desire to get your rabbit on the show table. Not just a birth certificate but something that will show you reliable information of the lineage. It is to ensure you show a purebred rabbit instead of hybrids and mixed breeds.

Why 3 generations of rabbits in the PEDIGREE you might ask. A purebred rabbit is one with 3 generations of purebred ancestry. Meaning to say, all the way up to the great grandparents must be at least Holland Lops. Why wouldn’t they be Holland Lops? That is because, Holland Lops are still being developed and they may cross breed with another breed to enhance the color or fur texture. For more information on this topic, please refer to an old post I posted previously called F1, F2, F3, F4, Hybrid & Purebred?

Another interesting thing is that, the rabbit that you desire to show DO NOT need to be offspring of a show rabbit or even a registered rabbit (but they must be pedigreed). Whether showing rabbits or dogs, the sense of integrity and principles of a person is always put to the test. Show breeders that cares a great deal of their reputations will uphold good sense of showmanship.

What I have witness and have the honor to know about the local dog showing world is that, there are bound to be some breeders that do not take to not winning that well. They just cannot lose and therefore, may “tweak” the pedigrees just to get through the procedures. Unethical dog breeders in order to get their dogs registered has also resorted to using a dead dog’s pedigree to get pedigrees for some mixed breed puppies. I know of many dogs without pedigrees having pedigreed puppies.

So the best thing to do is not to take winning or losing that seriously. Just have FUN and in the midst of that, have a great FELLOWSHIP and make many great FRIENDSHIPS!

I Got Adopted!

At the heart of Fellowship, Friendship & Fun, is a very happy and CUTE young lady called Cheri Bushee whom I have the privilege and honor to be introduced to by Karen L. Novina. Cheri owns Dovehill Farm rabbitry (the link’s up on the side).

While I was driving to work this morning, a thought came into my mind. I was feeling a little down because of being so overwhelmed with the entire rat race and all the negativity that is surrounding us at the moment. My inner voice told me that I should surround myself with happy people. Yes, quite an impossible feat in this era I must say.

So here I was, turning on my notebook, login on to the usual applications and out from no where, a chat box just popped up and it was Cheri sending me a miracle!

Indeed it was a miracle. After pouring out my concerns and Cheri being a great listener, I felt so much better!

We chat for a little while longer and not disclosing too much details, I volunteered and offered myself to be Cheri’s adopted son. LOL! Cheri liked the idea and from now on, I am calling her MOM!

It is amazing how the internet can bring people together. I am a strong believer in that everything happens for a reason. People come into our lives for a reason. And today, God sent me Cheri to give me hope and to brighten up my day.

And I wouldn’t know Cheri without knowing Karen and I will definitely not know what happened between Stanley and M&Ms if I have not known Karen too…

When life seemed like a drag, somehow one way or another, someone just comes into my life and knocks happiness right where it should be. I wish to have 365 great friends to cheer me up every single day!

That is what Fellowship, Friendship and Fun is all about.

So if you ever find this naive young man doing something wrong, feel free to let my MOMMY know, I am sure she’ll go for the ears but if you mess with me, I am sure MOMMY’s gonna go for yours as well…

Thank you MOM!

Reminiscence

This is something that I wanted to do for a very long time. It is always good to look back into the past and see how far we have come so that we will be grateful for what we have in the present. I am very grateful for how the herd has turned out to be so far. Let’s walk down memory lane shall we?

After losing the 3rd Generation from Unix, the herd was taken over by fully imported bloodlines in Skor, Noobie & BlueBerry.

And then came Holly Hope, Tinga, Eclipse, Luna, Miss Muffet, Charlyz, Moesha, Camior, Milkyway & Seychel the 2nd Generation.
