Backdrop Goreng Garang

Beyonce have a stage name or what she calls alter ego. Sacha Fierce? Like an average person, I do have a liking for beautiful things. If you have not already notice, I like capturing photographs of my rabbits and most of the time with interesting backdrops. After yesterday’s photography session, I went into a backdrop rampage.

If I have an alter ego for this rage for backdrop it would be “Backdrop Goreng Garang” or simply translated means “Fierce Backdrop Fryer” – ROFL. Sheer nonsense I know…

Let’s see what I have been frying up today. Poor little Miracle became my camwhore but he was such a good boy that knew what was required of him. Got the job done in a few minutes.

When My Fur Grows

Pixie Blu slowly coming into her own...

Time can make a lot of difference to a young rabbit. Time can either break or make the good looks in youngsters between 6 weeks to 5 months. They are different from week to week and that proved my point that most are attracted to rabbits at 4 weeks (under age) and show less liking for 8 week olds. But if you do wait a little longer, you will start to see some amazing results.

But bear in mind that genetics still play a great role here. What I just mentioned should not be taken literally and discretion while obtaining good stocks must be exercised.

I posted photos of Mighty Joe and Nessie last week. Let’s see after just one week, how much they have developed:

Mighty Joe living up to his name...

Nessie, don't you just love her?

What Can Your Children Learn

As we all know, there are now 2 sides to this rabbit hobby namely Just For Pets and Rabbit Showing. For the adults or in the OPEN it can be extremely competitive among serious breeders and it got me thinking what will the youth or young children learn from this wonderful hobby. Here’s my take on this topic:

Sense of responsibility

Having pet rabbits as a hobby does teach our children to be responsible for another living being. It also teaches them discipline as their pets must be watered and fed on a fixed routine. They have the opportunity to watch and learn the life cycle of a pet from young till death. There are many things that they will learn from keeping a pet healthy at all time.

Social skills

When they get into the Rabbit Showing sport, they will be introduced to other children their and also with the same hobby. They will learn how to socialize and at times learn how to be tactful in handling emotions of other children. As children always learn from their elders, we just have to be careful and to ensure they do not get entangled in the adult world. When they are good at honing social skills, that will help them handle human interaction issues better.

To be honest, having pet rabbits on its own is far more less damaging than having children in the showing sports. Introducing them to the showing sports would mean introducing dynamics and complexity into the hobby for them. Yes, he or she may not be in the run to win it but it does not mean someone he or she knows isn’t as well. And it all really depends on how much you want to protect your children.

The reason why I am writing this is because, I was able to see for myself the heartache in a child when he/she did not do well with his/her rabbit. The disappointment that shows on the face really tears my heart and that is something I will definitely not forget the next time I ever organize any rabbit competition.

The show arena is definitely somewhere to toughen up your kids!

Lessons from the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a must watch in my opinion. I really enjoyed the show and the messages were very clear and I would like to take some time to write about my thoughts of these messages. Comparing this one with all the previous versions, I really think that the story line and the entire setting of the movie was far more realistic without monkeys in space suits. This one’s more reasonable in theory.

Here are the messages I took home after watching this interesting movie:

1. Animals are always misunderstood

Carrots are rabbits’ staple food is enough to describe this point. Nature has got its way of telling us something but we are always too preoccupied to observe and be sensitive to these subtle nudges. We tend to impose our human needs unto animals forgetting to let nature take its course. Although the ecosystem and organisms are very diverse and complex, each has its part to play and collectively make this planet what it is. In the wild nature cleans up the weak and make way for the strong to survive and proliferate. Unfortunately, many a times human try to intervene based on their emotions. We place our feelings before us and try to save what is not meant to be saved because we failed to understand and forget how nature works. In the movie, all the apes wanted was to be free and be in a place where they belong – the forest.

2. Human should never play God

Extending from the previous point, as humans we have been blessed with intelligence far greater than any other organisms on this planet and by having intelligence, we rule over all other organisms. We domesticate animals and even breed them in captivity thinking it would be best for the species. Conservation is good but it would be better without us damaging the earth and using conservation as damage control. All the apes wanted was to get to the other side of the bridge to where the forest is. Seemed like too much to ask?

3. Humans are always dramatic, over reacts and over exaggerating

When the apes started acting unruly (to fight for freedom & to be where they belong), the humans started using firearms on them. Blocking off both ends of the bridge in the effort of stopping the apes from crossing the bridge. It does not make sense and seemed silly to me that they do not allow the apes to get to their destination. It seemed pointless what they were doing. So as you can see, the apes were merely acting upon their instinct while the humans over reacted.

As you can see, the humans really can stir up some major drama (stupid monkey!). A drama huge enough for a MAJOR BLOCKBUSTER! I absolutely enjoyed the movie and I believe everyone should watch it!

Lemmings

One of my favourite computer games when I was younger was Lemmings. It is quite similar to the modern day Angry Bird puzzle game that many have came to be addicted to. Lemmings in real life are small rodents similar to hamsters and the mice. I am not sure why they were given such a “stupid” image in the game but it was definitely frustrating at times when they fall short of the instructions given by the player.

Taken from Google images

The objective of the game is to rescue the whole herd of lemmings from inevitable death by using different skill sets to escape the puzzle. This game only tells you one thing – A Good Leader (you) can save an entire herd of Lemmings from extinction.

I am sure by now you will somehow understand my point and where I am coming from. As of late, I cannot help but to notice how easy it is for new comers in the rabbit hobby to be mislead. To a point that I must state the obvious and when I do that, it puts me in a bad light. Unfair isn’t it?

Things I have noticed happening:-

1) Oops, made a mistake which buck we use as STUD for you (If you didn’t ask, we will never tell). Shit hits the fan when kits of unexpected colour starts appearing in the litter – this is really NO CLASS. THIS IS CHEATING

2) Hyping up one’s herd credibility through many unscrupulous means and selling pets for brood/show quality price. Taking advantage of people without knowledge. THIS IS CHEATING

3) Selling pregnant does without informing buyer (you never ask, we will never tell). THIS IS DISHONEST

4) Promising rabbits with GC Legs when they really do not. Even original pedigrees are sure to be lost in the mail (freaking lame excuse). THIS IS CHEATING

5) All the above are given MERITS and SUPPORTED! THIS IS LEMMING!

With so much loose ends, I start to wonder if these irresponsible seller/broker/breeder or whatever you call them, give you what you paid for. Somehow their actions make me doubt further. People like that are capable of anything. Promise you a rabbit through photo but in real life it is a different rabbit, giving you a fake pedigree and even a mixed breed rabbit does not seem impossible.

Everyone love the convenience and depends on hearsay. “I heard this line is good so it is expensive. Never mind, as long as good I can spend a lot”. And soon, one after another just like the lemmings, they follow suit to inevitable death. Every lines has got its different quality if you do not already know. If only you care to learn how to distinguish between them. That’s if you really care. The same thing applies to unscrupulous rabbit sellers and it is very easy to put them out of business – WHEN THE BUYING STOPS, THE CHEATING WILL TOO!

If telling the truth is unpopular (which has always been since the existence of mankind), what should or can be done? I guess nothing. So I’ll leave you to continue supporting/encouraging and being mislead. I have grown and am done playing the LEMMINGS game.

I must also point out that this rabbit thing to some is pretty important as it has become their source of income and having the need to survive, has turn to immoral approaches. Pity is one thing but how many can you take pity? I am happy to be able to write and express my opinions through my observation without a care for anything because really (and again), this is just a hobby for me and not life or death situation. For some it is TOP PRIORITY – one rabbit not sold would mean no food for a day (sad but true).

And the point of this post really is, I just wanted to wish all of you, HAPPY BEING CHEATED!

DOPE!

Stop Buying Under Age Baby Rabbits!

Yes, it happens everywhere but it does not give us a good reason to patronize unscrupulous and irresponsible breeders/pet stores/retailer. How does a 8 weeks old look like? I have written an article about this issue earlier – https://truluvrabbitry.com/2009/01/01/how-does-a-8-weeks-old-look-like/

I am still getting question like “what can I feed an under age rabbit to save it?”. I know we are all very concerned pet lovers but let’s stop and take a look at the bigger picture and ask ourselves, HOW MANY CAN WE SAVE and SHOULD WE SAVE?

WE MUST ADDRESS THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM – WHERE THE BUNNIES CAME FROM!

Greedy people are taking advantage of the sympathy and compassion of pet lovers. We always think that “PERHAPS IT WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO SURVIVE UNDER MY CARE”. I am not doubting your ability to save another bunny’s life but I hope you can stop encouraging greedy people by NOT supporting their irresponsible act.

Enough Is Enough...

“When the buying stops, the killings will to” is a very common tagline we hear these days. We ask ourselves how many sharks has been killed for their fins and in fact some shark species are threatened to the brink of extinction. Will you buy a giant tank, fill it up with salt water and save every single shark out there without fins?

So with that, I would like to urge everyone to “SAY NO” when it really matters! This campaign runs every single day!

P/S: Please feel free to use these <8W pictures on your website/facebook/blog in support of this cause!

In The Studio We Go…

“Make sure you evaluate carefully before passing on your rabbits”

That’s what the production crew member told me before I left for home. Regrets, I have none. Tru-Luv Chiko went to the right family and I am happy that he is well taken care of. He has grown into a very handsome 4 months old!

So I received an email last week. A favour request from a media production house to loan one of Tru-Luv’s rabbits. As I always enjoy spending time in the studio environment, it was difficult to decline. But the problem really wasn’t with whether I can make it for the photo shoot but the problem was that they wanted a black rabbit in particular. My thoughts went to Chiko straight away and I was glad the his owner agreed to join me at the studio for a couple of hours.

I was given strict instructions not to share photographs that I have taken of the artiste until the launching so therefore, I am just sharing photos of Tru-Luv Chiko. He was a natural and I am so very proud of him! He is the best example of a rabbit that is used to handling and very well taken care of.  My heart is joyful.

Tru-Luv Chiko a CPG Pro Optimum boy, his fur shines!

Goodbye Black-Letterhead, Hello Pilcrow!

Do you like the new theme? I absolutely LOVE IT!

For the past couple of years, I have been using the Blak-Letterhead theme by Ulysses Ronquillo. It is always difficult to choose an appealing and suitable theme for a rabbit weblog because I am very particular on how slick it looks. And with the large number of themes available to choose from, it made it even harder for me to decide on the best.

As I browsed through and previewing the themes randomly, I stumbled across this latest theme called Pilcrow by Automattic. I fell in love instantly. What I like most about this theme is that, it retains a banner and on top of that, we have the menu above the banner. I believe with the Black-Letterhead theme, new visitors get kinda lost browsing for information. With the main menu on top, the Info Center will be hard to miss with this new theme.

On a happy note, TinyCritterz.com has replenished stocks and a few new products has been added. Besides that, an old product has made a comeback with new packaging, I am talking about Rabbit Nutri-Drops – now available in 30 ml and 240 ml. Kritter’s Crumbles (click here for brochure) is the new bedding material all rabbit owners must try. It is available on-line exclusively on TinyCritterz.com. It is the latest fastest moving product!

While you are shopping over at TinyCritterz.com please remember to stock up on the TinyCritterz’ Timothy Hay, Versele-Laga Cuni Complete, Cuni PRO and Cuni Nature!

Thank you all for your immense support! Made it all worthwhile sharing information and providing the shopping experience at the same time!

Happy Shopping!
