Tails From Meadow Haven: Holly Hope’s Kindling

“Momma! I feel like bursting!”

“Don’t you worry about a thin, Momma’s next to you”

“Momma! There’s someone standing in front of my cage!”

“Don’t you worry dear, that’s master’s daddy! He’s a very seasoned midwife, if you can’t push any of the little ones out, he will help ya pull em out”

“What! That’s yucky momma”

Approximately at 1.30 pm

“Momma! I am feeling this funny sensation coming from my stomach!”

“It is really near now my dear. Now, now, listen to momma. Go pick up some hay and lay them in that box master gave you. And, slowly pull some fur from your dewlap now”

“Momma, pulling fur’s gonna hurt, I am feeling the pain already!”

“Don’t worry dear, the pain from your stomach will numb you from the fur pulling”

“Whatever you say momma, I still don’t like this old man standing in front of my cage”

“Don’t bother him my dear, just pull yourself together for the great push”

“Momma! I feel something coming out!”

“Alright now, remember you told me master brought you watching the big light? Remember you told me how this guy in white shirt and black shirt squating while punching in the air?”

“Yes momma, it was some guy called Brush Lean (Bruce Lee?). He was preparing to fight this man called Zhuck Snorris”

“Whatever the name dear, remember you’re gonna kindle like right now? Yeah, whatever move he was doing, just do that now”

“Alright. ErrrggghHhhhhh”

POP!

“One, momma”

POP!

“Two, momma”

POP!

“Three, momma and he is still watching me!”

POP!

“Yuck momma! What’s this?”

“Oh that’s some left overs. Just gobble em up and be done with it. Be sure to clean the little ones when you’re done”

“Momma, they are so rubbery”

“Oh just eat it will ya, you don’t want master to have so much cleaning up to you”

………..

Hi everyone, we have got 3 broken kits. 1 is a peanut with very nice chocolate shading (I think). Still need a day or two to figure out their color. There are 2 kits that are in good shape. One of them darker than the other. I sure hope they are chocolates. Nonetheless, I am very proud of Holly Hope. Not too bad at all for 1st timer! Another gem.

I know, I know, PHOTOS!

This is how the war zone looked like:

My bundle of joy being heated up. They were squeking like mad when I found them. Must be really cold

Pinkies!

Amidst the joy of a new litter there is always a little shade of sadness. Yes, peanuts. We could be happier with less of them. The deadly double dwarf gene is always a heart wrenching outcome to behold. If you notice, it is hard to identify where the ears are. My hope is for it to survive but we all know too well what will the outcome be.

The lady of the day, Holly Hope!

Dinner Time!

Special Thanks to everyone for their prayers especially Lindsey, Kak Azian, SB, Daphie, Nerq & Darma.

10.30 am : No actions

Original Post

As at 6.30 am, there were no sign of actions and I left for work at 6.45 am. I’ve got someone to come over to look after her and update me at work.

Talking about remote support. LOL.

She is lying on her side all the time now and you could just see the huge buldge on her. Praying hard that she does well. I am very anxious and excited at the same time. Quite disappointed that I can’t take the day off to witness her first litter.

We shall see how it goes and if all goes well, we might be seeing pinkies tonight!

Special Update: Holly Hope Day 30

Sorry for the late updates. My day didn’t start off too well and something happened that really broke my spirit. I am trying to pick up the pieces and try not to let Holly Hope feel my sadness. On the other hand, I am accepting the fact that things normally happen for good reasons and since I am at a juncture of making crucial decision, it is better for these things to happen now. At least I know what are the next course of actions to undertake.

She have not kindled yet but like yesterday, she’s really heavy and I could really see kicks from within her stomach more often now. I believe those are kicks that I am looking at. Let’s just take a look at the video. There are some twitches amidst the normal breathing movements. Many people would argue that you can never feel or see kicks, but I tend to believe otherwise.

Provocative Quote

From time to time I meet very interesting characters and recently, I had the privilege of meeting a chatty girl nicknamed annebunny. We were discussing on the issue of breeding, the hottest topic that I will always talk to new rabbit acquaintances that I meet. And naturally, the discussion led to me asking whether she would feel bad if the kits from her breeding was sold to irresponsible owners and she replied:

“I do not think people would buy something they do not want”

Now, this statement is stuck to my head like glue. Such a simple statement that has so much weight to it. In between fighting within myself so hard not to agree with it, I realized that it does make some sense. Well, maybe some of you may go “DUHHhhhHH”.

I have posted a couple of adoption posts in the past and what I fear most is that, out of all the rabbits being sold on a regular basis in the pet shops, a big percentage would be thrown out. To a great extend, I believe a huge percentage of those rabbits sold seldom make it to adulthood and even so, with inadequate care they will experience the same fate-death. The adoption posts are but a few “reported” cases. I hope there are no more than that. It is very nerve wreaking to have a sense of knowing that there are many more unreported cases.

But let us all hope for the best and believe in this little profound statement. I really do hope, people only buy things that they truly desire and cherish forever.

And let us just leave it as that.

P/S: Thanks annebunny for this inspiration, it is nice to know yet another rabbit lover that I believe through time, will blossom into someone who fights for the rights of domestic pets

Special Report: Holly Hope Day 29

UPDATE 3.45 pm:

More kicking seen lower mid abdomen

Hope’s quieter than usual

Original Post:

Another 2 more days to 31 days mark. I hope she kindles on 30th day which is tomorrow as I will be around to assist her should there be a need that arises. I believe the nest box has been prepared and left as it is.

I woke up this morning finding Holly Hope sleeping in this position:

img_9828

Seemed like an April Fool’s joke. I got a super shock!

img_9830

And on closer loook, I could see some kicks happening occassionally.

Hope is such a sweet girl, she is very affectionate at the moment always coming to the cage door to get some attention like the usual. But she does not allow me to even touch her stomach.

img_9815

She’s having a little molt at the moment and just in time for her to pull some fur. Less work for me but I have been grooming her a lot lately.

img_9806

She’s quite stoned at the moment and I think she’s doing a lot of prayers herself.

img_9818

And since she’s so still in her cage I decided to try something I have never done before. I was curious about her color wether there is a band just for curiosity sake. Her lilac color as you can see runs all the way down in my opinion. LOL!

I also measured her length while lying down on her side. From the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail, she measured 14 inches. That is rather small for a Holland Lop right?

Fingers and toes are still crossed except when I am typing….

Teri Reymann: A Very Nice Friend

For the past few weeks, I had the honor to meet a lot of renown rabbit breeders from the US and I would like to write this post for a very special person. I met Teri Reymann from Sonshine Rabbitry not too long ago and I must say that she is one of the nicest people I have ever met on the internet.

It is so amazing how we can put aside our differences in this cyberworld and come togther virtually for many great things like exchanging knowledge, sharing experiences to name but a few.

What caught my attention at first was of course Teri’s Holland Lops. But I must say that she has got killer Netherland Dwarfs in her barn.

What I like most about Teri is her willingness to share unconditionally. Whatever question that you may have, she is always there to give you a hand.

We share something in common the both of us, the DISLIKES for UNETHICAL BREEDERS. We even share some common names of unethical breeders on our “blacklists” too.

Teri works with many rabbits from various top rabbitries in US. And if you find anything that you like, I am sure she could work something out for you.

Everyday I thank God for bringing nice people into my life and I thank Him for crossing our paths, Teri & I.

It does not hurt one bit to talk about nice people that truly deserve a mention.

So from time to time, watch out for the new Category called Friends Of Tru-Luv. These are the people you ought to know in the Rabbit World. But that doesn’t mean you should not approach those not mentioned here. Most rabbit breeders are nice people. Some you will know their true colors only after you deal with them but that’s for a mention another time.

We all should think about rabbit people as very genuine people because they have a heart to love a lesser creature but just becareful when you deal and always deal based on references (Laurie did mention this and I was not smart enough to understand).

There you go, another GOOD rabbitry owner to put into your research collection that is Teri Reymann of Sonshine Rabbitry!

Special Report: Holly Hope Day 28

She’s heavily pregnant & lying on her sides more. Do not really move much when she’s out on her run time.

I could also see that her mid section is bulging out quiet a bit. Could be more than 4 I believe.

I have got a hot water bottle and Vaseline ready. I hope she pops by Sunday.

All Buhnies & Humans fingers and toes crossed in prayer.

Remember Them? It’s Floppie & Lumix!

It has been a while since we last saw these 2. There were from my initial lines. Their owner E was kind enough to send me a picture. I melted the moment I saw the photo because THEY ARE BONDED!

2 unfixed bucks bonded? How amazing is that? Look at both father and son enjoying a meal together. This is really a rare sight to behold.

Update:

Mr. E said that he did not do much to get them bonded except for putting their cages side by side. And they usually do not give much attention to each other when they are out to roam together. Here’s another photo:

How The World Sees Us

I believe this post do not apply to you since that you’re here it means very well that you’re one of those “weird” bunny people.

My post yesterday was about getting caught in the rabbit fever bug. There are a lot of similar fever bugs in this world. To name a few, we have dog fever bug, cat fever bug, hamster fever bug, automobile fever bug and ROTA fever bug. Addiction you may call it. We are all chasing for the “first” high like how a drug addict is. Nothing in this world seemed to be complete without this addiction of ours. We talk, eat, sleep and breath rabbits.

But have you ever encountered people telling you, ” I just do not get what’s with you and these OVERGROWN RODENTS (quoting Lindsey)” or “It’s just a rabbit and I don’t see any significance in them”. But I can also tell you frankly, I know nothing about my car. It is for me to get from one location to another. Ask me anything about the engine, I’ll stare blankly at you. Yes, for that, I have been alienated by all the macho men driving their modified cards with exhaust pipes fit for a coconut. I also found that very outrageous! But for the sake of not losing friends, I normally just keep quiet when the topic of the day is, CARS.

At the same time when Lindsey was telling me how the world in general looks at us bunny people, coincidentally I was also discussing to SB why it is a “challenge” to be an ethical breeder.

The topic of the discussion was, is it hard to look for good homes for rabbits? To be very honest, it is BUT possible. We are not talking about good homes where owners buy toys for the rabbits. We are talking about those that have done enough research on the basic care. We are definitely not talking about the impulsive buyer running home with the new found treasure in the form of a cute fur ball to later grow bored of it as fast as it outgrows the cuteness. We are talking about long lasting forever homes!

It is quite a coincident and I thought I just have to write about this and hope more people in general come to realize how fun it is.

When my brother saw the article with me on Malay Mail yesterday, he was a little skeptical looking at the words Ethical Breeder. That is exactly what I am talking about. The entire world has doubt because of the few unethical ones. How many times have we purchased a pet and later found out (if we ever do more research) that it was not the breed as being told to us at the pet store? But the point that I am trying drive home is not how ethical or unethical breeders can be whether they breed rabbits, dogs, cats or any other household pets. I really want to talk about the LOVE one has for animals. Unethical breeders will not exist if there is enough LOVE in them.

Yes, my main point is LOVE. Mind you, I love my brother very much but he is a lot like the general public with the typical mentality. Pets will never be on his topic of interest. I guess that’s from bad experiences he had with the dogs we keep in the house. He is always the early bird that almost never catches any worms at home. LOL. I just cannot stop laughing thinking about this. All of us know how we are not resilient to have those “accidents” with our dogs kept indoors. Yes, I mean dog poo! So being an early bird, he always walk around the house (dazed) in the morning not looking where he goes and always end up stepping on dog poop first thing in the morning! Told you he never catches the worms! I guess for that reason he hates having pets for not wanting to clean up after them.

Whatever reason it is for a person not to love animals, I hope they give it a try. They will soon realize how fulfilling having a pet is. But the sad thing is, most of the time, they will not try. Not only that, they will never allow their children have any pets. Yes, we all dread the day when the pet we bought for our children end up being ours to care for. At the end of the day we’re in the position to correct this behavior if only we put our feet down and get the interest back into our children. The saddest thing about these parents is that, they go on with their lives have a few children that are not exposed to having pets. Now, not like how Air Supply sings about “2 Less Lonely People In The World”, we would end up with more lonely people in the world because these children will grow up to dislike having pets. Very sad indeed. But that’s the reality of things we cannot impose our standards and expectations on another human being. We call that human rights.

So now, not many people are interested in having pets. Divide that into the many different species of pets. We are only left with a handful of people that may like rabbits. And out of that, how many would be doing the ample research or be resourceful enough to learn let alone exceeds the provision of basic care?

And back to Lindsey’s concern. Are we crazy? Are we obsessed? I believe in our rights to be human beings, NO! It is the best thing in this world to be addicted to LOVE. We raise rabbits from our hearts (don’t mean unethical breeder, though). We share what we raised with LOVE with others hoping that this LOVE can be contagious. It is our way of “a random act of kindness”.

And with LOVE, ethical breeders exist! One of the main point to consider a breeder is ethical is how he/she strive to achieve a certain standard laid by a recognized establishment. Please note that this is only a part of being an ethical breeder. Because although many breeders are attached to an established organization, some are worst than unethical in their actions. A truly ethical breeder will turn their LOVE for the animals into taking upon themselves to produce the best of quality and share these with his/her peers without reservations/expectations (this we call unconditional love). And part of the “obsession/craze” comes from this passion chasing for perfection.

Another point to note is that we are always getting hit by peer pressure be it in school or in our personal lives in general. We always follow the bandwagon. I believe it is high time, we set the standards! We must retaliate and use our stance to pressure our peers back! Hit them with the rabbit fever bug!

If you are being labeled as obsessed or crazy, please do not take it to heart because when we are enthusiastic in what we do, they will sure to notice and that’s when we hit them hard. It much much better than to be addicted to drugs, smoke & booze!

My bunny friends, YOU ARE VERY NORMAL indeed. Rabbits for LIFE!

Updates from Melbourne: Bunny Fever @ 1000 Degrees!

There is no telling what you WILL NOT do for your rabbits once you are hit with this CONDITION. I call it condition because I do not want it to sound as bad as a DISEASE. J & J has been hit by this bunny fever bug since Oreo kindled. First, a hutch make over and guess what’s next?

Let’s have a preview of the patio before the make over and after.

Before:

before

One of the Js wants me to emphasize how dirty this one is. I just could not agree. I thought this was decent. But….

After:

after

They totally converted the patio into a superb bunspace! What else can you say except for WOW!?

Make you feel like getting a rabbit and a killer hutch right?

Let’s go through this new bunspace in detail. The lawn was remade by laying wire mesh before the soil and grass went on top. The lawn is sure to be bunny proof from digging.

“I really want to be a bunny now!”

“What!? A hobbit hole? I think it’s a HopInIt hole! A man-made burrow! Now, step aside MTV Cribs, this is PIMP MA’ HOLE…oops sorry, no profanity, PIMP MA’ BURROW”

dsc_1075

Ya’ll wanna know how the BURROW was made? It is a plastic igloo covered with dirt and grass! Talking about creativity! The buhnies love it! This is really innovative beyond human’s ability. You really have to put yourself into the rabbit’s shoes literally to know what they like. I am dumbstruck by my dear friend’s new craze!
