Lifestyle: Your rabbit & you

Before anyone decides to get an animal as pets, he or she in normal circumstances would do some basic research if that particular pet fits one’s lifestyle. Take for instance when one makes a decision on which breed of dog to keep as a companion. Throughout history, many breeds of dog has been “developed” and each breed has a functionality and purpose. And the wonder of it all is that we can find a perfect fit most of the time.

It is quite often that we see a mismatch because many tend to not see beyond the cute look of a young animal e.g. puppy. Little Bingo soon grows up to be a handful and many problems soon arises thereafter.

Now, let’s talk about how a rabbit fit into our lifestyle. Like any other pet, if we are keeping a single rabbit, we should always spend time with it. There would definitely be a bond established. In my opinion, like any other pet, a rabbit can fit into any type of lifestyle as long you have time for it.

Now, let’s talk about my rabbits and me. I believe for most of us that love our pets too much, the situation is always US fitting into our RABBITS’ lifestyle. I for one tend to slave for my rabbits trying to meet all their needs. Just hope that I do not discover their “WANTS”. LOL…

I have shared this with many people but have never written about it. I love my rabbits so much that I taste their pellets for quality. I once tried a piece of the local pellets and tasted sand in it. Never fed them local pellets since. It is such a shame that manufacturer adds “extra” ingredients just to put in the weight to their product. No wonder they are “dirt” cheap.

So, is it normal to behave this way? As in doing so much for your pets?

I believe many would label me crazy for tasting pellets. But who cares?

FOR THE LOVE ON BUNS!

P.S.: Really love to take some photos of the herd but just could not find the time to do it. Sorry for the long wait people…

Bum Lifting & Tribal Calls!

I attempted to breed BlueBerry and Skor again last evening. BlueBerry did not behave as aggressive as before. As usual, Skor will attempt to mount with every opportunity. I was busy cleaning their cages and I took a peek through the window. Not too long after, I saw Skor mounting and then to my surprise, BlueBerry lifted her bum quite high up this time and it wasn’t something she has done so far. In a split second, as Skor “went for the kill”, he gave a loud “tribal call” while falling backwards.

Judging from BlueBerry’s behavior, it somehow tells me that she was too shy whenever I am around. She will normally cuddle up at the corner of the playpen when I approach her. I guess rabbits need some privacy too.

Well, I gave them enough private time for 2 bum lifts and tribal calls. I even wanted to snap a photo of them in the act but I figured that I should spare them from embarrassment and truly respect their privacy. I do not condone animal pornography. LOL!!!!

Watch out people, “kits in the nest box” coming this way in another month!

Judging the quality of young rabbits

I have written on the topic of culling before and I just felt that it is appropriate for me to elaborate further.

Some breeders shared with me that they normally cull their rabbits after 4 months. But on the other hand, some may be able to tell me if my 6 to 8 weeks old kit is of show quality or not.

So how do we know exactly and at what age?

I always begin with looking for some traits. Comparing the breed standard to the rabbit in question is normally what I will do if I need to cull early. I always have a mental note of the breed standards and when I look at the kit, I will try to find as many faults as I can. But I cannot be absolutely sure at such a tender age of 6 or 8 weeks that my young rabbit may turn out ugly or pretty at maturity age.

That is when my gut feelings come in handy. LOL. There is something call prediction and rough estimation. I need to do that most of the time. And I am lucky that they are quite accurate so far. LOL. I think that is because I do not have much choice to begin with. LOL.

P.S.: Cull does not mean kill. It means getting the rabbit out of breeding program or to be sold as pets for me.

The uncertainties of Life: Humans & Rabbits

We are experiencing yet another increase in fuel prices. This is going to take a toll on a lot of things especially food and basic necessity expenditures.

There are already tons of uncertainties when raising rabbits. Being a rabbit owner you just cannot figure out when and how your little hopper would fall sick. That is a type of uncertainties that I always dread. More so when a health problem strikes you unaware.

There is another set uncertainties and that is living this life as the owner. Since we do not have control over the fuel prices, it would be a great burden for us if the prices increase every now and then. Fuel prices determine the prices for other things as well and when prices of things increase, we tend to cut back on expenditure and start to prioritize.

I hate to give up my pets just because of financial situation because it is just so damn sad. It would kill my spirit if it happens.

What can we do to brave through this challenge in life?

Why diarrhea?

I participate in the local rabbit forum and sometimes, I read about new rabbit owners in distress because their rabbits are having diarrhea.

There are many sides to their stories. Some fed their 6 weeks old rabbits fresh vegetable and some just could not differentiate between diarrhea and cecal. Whatever the reason, most of the time, the underlying problem remains the same – the kits were weaned too early.

Some of these kits are packed and sent to pet shops at the tender age of 4 weeks just to maximize their “shelf life”. Yes, the main factor is their cuteness. And most of them have to pay with their lives.

Many unaware buyers get caught in the web of deception because they simply do not know that what looks good on the outside does not necessarily reflect what is inside. This is especially true with rabbits because being animal of prey, they do not normally show sign of weakness and if they do, it may already be too late.

And the most frustrating part is that some owners just sit on their heavy butt and failed to weigh the urgency of the situation. They still post in forums expecting for advice when what they should do is to send their rabbits to the vet right away.

Most of the time I do not even dare to feedback on these posts because firstly, it is difficult to ascertain the real situation through the shallow descriptions given and secondly, I believe they should always consult a qualified vet immediately when their rabbits show symptoms of illness.

The last thing I want is having a dead rabbit because of my recommendations due to my inaccurate assumptions.

But what if all else fails?

If you got yourself a vet whom is only well versed in cats and dogs, then that will leave you with no choice but to try the best to save little bunny. So what should you do?

It is a norm to rehydrate the rabbit the best you could by providing loads of water and stop giving pellets for a day. Provide unlimited hay and only re-introduce the pellets once the stomach stabilized (judge through normal fecal deposited).

Most resources encourage feeding rabbits below 6 months with alfalfa but I notice that some young rabbits do not take to alfalfa all that well. They start to have excessive cecal due to the reason that alfalfa may be too rich for them. I just cannot remember the exact cause for excessive cecal when feeding alfalfa to young rabbits. Someone please enlighten me on that.

I believe the best pointer is always going back to the basics. I normally get idea by reminding myself about how wild rabbits are when they are in the wild. What do they eat in the wild is a good question to begin with.

I always like to conclude that the way to a healthy rabbit is through its stomach. As long as their stomach is in good condition, there will always be binkies.

I started off this post wanting to give a solution for diarrhea but I believe it has been written for too many times and I am not a qualified vet to begin with so I do not think I am in the position advice.

I hope someone can comment and perhaps give their opinion on how to solve a diarrhea problem. Thanks in advance.

Who is willing to ship internationally?

I think it is high time that I write a blog entry for those who are interested in shipping their rabbits out from where they are so that we could share this information openly. That way, it would be easier for those interested to get their rabbits, whatever breed that they want.

If you are a breeder outside of Malaysia and interested in letting us here in Malaysia know that you are willing to ship rabbits out of your country, just leave a comment below so that whoever interested will be able to contact you.

NOTE: Tru-Luv Rabbitry will not be responsible for any bad deals and people getting conned through this service. I am just opening up the opportunity for rabbit enthusiasts to meet up and share. Seller or Buyer please be very careful when dealing.

1st of the month again

We have come to the middle of the year again. How fast time flies. We are not moving anytime soon because some renovation has to be done at the new place. I am particularly stressed out because I have all the building materials for the rabbitry in place and things are just not moving along as how I wanted. Not to mention the cost of all the hustling and bustling to get this new “crib” ready.

BlueBerry and Skor is being treated for mites at the moment. Another 4 weeks of Ivermectin regimen. I hope to get them to the new place 3 weeks into their treatment. Noobie and Holly Hope must wait since the latter is still nursing off mommy.

I really hate these darn mites. They are just so difficult to get rid of.

Other than these, nothing much is happening at this juncture. Since it is first of the month, it is normally stock up time and I have bought 2 packets of 10lbs Oxbow. I still have loads of hay and need to let the buns finish them up before getting new ones. I would love to give the botanical hay a try.

I really need to find time to take more photos because I notice that photos are the best thing to attract more readers to my blog.

See ya soon!
