Normal, True Dwarf & Peanut

I would like to take some time to share my knowledge about some terms that are very common among dwarf rabbit breeders. This applies especially to any dwarf breeds including the Holland Lop.

There is something call the dwarf genes in dwarf rabbits and the genotype “symbol” usually used is dw. The normal gene is denoted as Dw.

A normal or false dwarf will normally have the genotype of DwDw. Meaning to say a pair of normal gene. These rabbits do not have the dwarfing traits like short ears, short limbs and big massive head like a midget. But I must say that some may make very good breeding materials.

Now, a true dwarf is a rabbit with the genotype of Dwdw which means, 1 normal gene and 1 dwarf gene.

Lastly, a peanut is a kit that has dwdw genotype.

So you may ask, how can I not get a peanut. Breeding a DwDw to a Dwdw will ensure no peanut. Just take a look at the combination. Each parent will contribute 1 gene to the offspring so DwDw x Dwdw will only give you DwDw and Dwdw. Meaning, normal kits and true dwarfs.

What is not desirable is to breed DwDw with DwDw. This combination only give you normal kits.

To increase the chances of true dwarfs or show compatible Holland Lops, breeders normally breed a Dwdw to a Dwdw. And this combination will produce peanuts.

How do you know that the kit is a true dwarf? True dwarfs normally have thick stumpy legs, big head, short ears and most importantly, the length of the hind feet is not longer than 2 times the width of the feet itself. So if you’re getting long hind feet, this normally means your kit is turning to be a normal.

And if you are getting peanuts, it means that both the parents are true dwarfs.

I believe that in the market today, most of the “Holland Lop” are not only normal with the DwDw gene, they could also be a possibility of being mixed bred.

There you go, some information about the true dwarfs in our modern world.

Tru-Luv Truffles: Day 5

img_9922

Finally found a name for the broken black kit. Tru-Luv Truffles seemed to fit as I do not know its gender yet. He is now a singleton getting all the milk he wants. Totally spoiled!

I am happy to have another broken black kit at Meadow Haven. Seemed like a specialized color for me. LOL. Maybe I should change the color scheme of this blog to reflect what colors I would like to see in my rabbits. I guess it is much more important to work on overall type then to emphasize on the color.  I am a little dissappointed because I was very close to having chocolates but now it seemed I could only “smell” them.

Facts they never told you

“That rabbit in the cage look so cute, I would like to have him please”

Sounds like shopping for your favorite dress is it not? That is exactly what they do to you in places that sell pets. I believe it is called Visual Marketing if I am not wrong?

Behind every litter of rabbits, are truth and facts never told. You will never see death because if you did, they fear that their sales will plummet. What you see is just superficial upfront that is being put up to impress. All unpleasant information swept underneath the carpet.

That is the real world. The reality that we cannot accept but at the same time, condone indirectly. I am sad to have peanuts because I am a human as well. I have feelings for my pets. At the same time, I am happy to share these information with you. Something that never been done.

Death for me should not be taken as a weakness in the rabbitry. Faults or even genetically challenged traits should not be something that an ethical breeder should be ashamed of. We must identify all these and make it known. Death should not be seen as something bad or negative. We should instead look into how we can improve further.

It may sound cold but I have learned to let nature take its course. Just like in the wild, a weak rabbit has no room for the wilderness. But for me, I chose to do something about it. And if my attempts do not bear fruit, I will indeed let nature take its course.

I have written about peanuts in the past. So for those who still do not understand, please use the search feature of this blog.

Peanut is inevitable in DWARF BREEDS. And please bear in mind, Holland Lop is indeed one of the hardest breed to raise. Any breeders will tell you that. But I am courageous enough to take this challenge and I am loving it. Not loving the deaths but what thrives.

If you do not see Mycrochip in my future posts, please know that I do not want to talk about it and just pick up the hint from there.

Don’t we all emphasize on negativity?

img_9916

The reason for Mycrochip not growing like its sibling is because it lacks GROWTH HORMONES from its pituitary gland. Some peanuts are known to not have a stomach and normally would starve to death. Basically, they may have a certain undeveloped organ.

Holly Hope’s Litter: Day 3

Dear readers,

I am not going to post photos today because I came home rather late from work today and I am very tired. But what I can say is that, little Mycrochip does not look all that good. It’s getting skinny and I feel that it is fading away.

Holly Hope has been pulling fur excessively and I was able to pull out bundles of fur from her mouth. I don’t know how much she has ingested. I hope she stop the bad habit and there isn’t much in her stomach.

Sorry to disappoint for not posting photos today. Thank you for your time checking back on this blog.

Regards,

The Bunnyman

UPDATE:

I cannot help but to take a photo of the 2 kits together. I believe tonight may be the last night for little Mycrochip. I guess they are right when they say the more you want something badly, the more it will fade away from you. Maybe there could be a chance Mycrochip could bounce back which I doubt.

It is sad that it all boils down to this sort of ending.

Bon Voyage Tru-Luv Moesha!

I just sent Moesha to her new owner. Would like to welcome annebunny to the big TLR family. A sweet young lady she is and she even brought along her 3 months old little bunny called Tinkerbell when we met up just now.

Here’s the last photos I took for Moesha. A true “celebrity” bunny fit for a “celebrity”.

Sorry for the bad pictures. I am awaiting annebunny to send me some at her new home.

Holly Hope’s Litter: Day 2

I know everyone’s waiting for pictures of the pinkies.

The little one seemed to be alright so far. Both of them reminds me of Moesha and Charlyz when they were newborn kits. Let’s just hope the little one survive through 7th day for now alright?

So here are the pictures as promised:

Let’s pray that Tru-Luv Mycrochip thrives. I still trying to figure out a name for the broken black. Any suggestion? Anyone have a favorite dark chocolate brand name?

And by the way, Holly Hope has got quite a few bald patches on her. She’s been pulling fur non-stop to cover the kits.

Holly Hope’s Litter: Day 1

Little runt/peanut/dwarf survived a day (we need it to go through the 3 days mark). The broken black kit was really plump and I could even see a big patch of white milk through the transparent tummy when I check on them first thing returning from work.

Holly Hope has been nursing them well. But the little one did not get much milk I believe so I am going to assist it by turning Holly Hope around so that it could suckle. He/she definitely need extra feeding.

Holly Hope’s Litter: Day 0

Just within a few hours we have our first casualty and it is not the peanut. The peanut is still holding on and seemed to be quite warm. I put my hand into the nest box at 11 pm and felt a cold kit. To my horror, it was the other “thriving” broken chocolate kit.

The notion that I will only be left with another broken black seemed to be a reality that I must accept. It is not meant to be that we start this year off having chocolates.

But this litter of kits define a lot of things for me. Under our Malaysian weather, a buck can be near sterile judging from the number of kits I am getting with 2 matings. And most importantly, Skor is indeed a chocolate carrier.

If any of the kits survives this time, it would consider a bonus. Maybe this broken black is the buck I need to replace Skor? I hope so as it is also a chocolate carrier!
