Rabbits: A Passing Craze/Fad/Trend?

I just had this topic on my mind today. Not too long ago, Malaysians were stormed by the “Flowerhorn” craze. As most of us know, the craze died without a trace and what happen to all these flowehorns?

Alright, I know that most readers may not know what is flowerhorn. It is a hybrid fish genetically bred by crossing a few cichlid breeds to produce a fish with a big hump on its head and also bright red body with bluish dots. I personally do not know why it became such a famous breed back then. Most Chinese believed that these fishes may produce some 4 digit numbers on their bodies and it would mean winning the lottery with those numbers.

To cut the long story short, flowerhorn is a type of fish Malaysians accidentally stumbled across by crossbreeding some cichlids from Lake Malawi.

So, looking at things both locally and internationally, would rabbit be a type of craze like the flowerhorn?

I hope not…

Tridus: Skor’s Shadow?

Just got a few pictures of Tridus from D. Really happy to see how he is growing up. I like his symmetric markings. He has got short ears (compared to Latara). Hope he continues to grow up to be a super duper handsome buck.

Blog Visits

One thing I like about this wordpress account is that it has got a cool blog statistics that gives me a rough idea of how my blog is doing. I can see that throughout these few months, the number of daily visits to this blog fluctuates a lot and I cannot stop but to wonder how can I further increase the number of daily visits so that I can see a constant volume.

I am going to observe the pattern in this few days to ascertain which is the day when all bunny lovers like reading about rabbitries and come out with a conclusion as to why certain days the volume is lower.

Looking at the current statistics, I feel that the volume could be increased further.

For those of you reading this, thank you for visiting and have a nice ahead.

A helping hand

Since I started developing the Holland Lop breed, I have my fair share of ups and downs. But through it all, I always have fellow bunny angels to consult. I usually consult a number of highly experienced breeders whenever I am faced with difficult situations. They have since became my mentors (at least unofficially on their part). Just like life’s experiences, there are so much to learn about this wonderful breed. There is just so much to learn about rabbits in general that sometimes it is hard to keep up.

I am a strong believer of the saying “what goes around, comes around” and therefore, as much as I am offered help and advice, I try my level best to help a fellow rabbit owner in distress. It is very fulfilling to be able to share some experiences that could save a new found friend from some worries.

I also realized that the more we share, we could learn at the same time as well. The rabbit community in Malaysia is still very small and there are so much undesirable opinions about rabbits. Most of the cases, there are nothing wrong with the rabbits but instead I believe it is just how ill-informed the general public is. For example, based on popular beliefs, many are still under the impression that rabbits and carrots are inseparable.

Another common belief is rabbits or any pets for the matter must be kept in pairs. Most people would get a pair of male and female without giving thought as to how the two would multiply into an undesirable number.

My hope is that, there would be awareness programs to re-educate the general public about this wonderful pet and that one day, Malaysia would be filled with sound quality rabbits and owners alike.

If you are reading this, give your little bunny a hug and do not take it for granted. You are having the most amazing pet on earth.

P.S.: I am very sorry if I seemed to be shooting blanks with this post, in actual fact I do not have much to write but at the same time told myself that I must fill up that calendar on the right there… 😛

Noobie & Little Hope

As I was taking some photos of Little Hope just now, I realized that it has got some crusty skin rash like those that I seen on my baby daughter when she was born not too long ago. They call it the Cradle Cap in babies. Is it the same for baby rabbits?

I think Little Hope is digesting the milk faster now as its stomach got smaller earlier today. Will leave the nest box with Noobie and see how it goes.

Here are some new photos:

Global Recession & Rabbits

It is said that food prices would be going up due to the rising oil prices. Just imagine the impact on us and I cannot stop but to wonder how it would affect our beloved rabbits. Most of the good rabbit pellets are imported from the US and if the the prices of raw materials rises, it would mean that cost to import would be affected as well.

I do hope that the pet industry is not impacted that badly by this alleged global recession. How could we survive without our beloved rabbits I wonder. Maybe it is time that we learn not to take our pets for granted and at the same time, we have to be vigilant looking for alternatives.

I am always looking out for opportunity not to depend so much on imported rabbit feed but it proofs in vain because the local feeds are hopeless. I normally taste the pellets myself and there were once I actually tasted sand in the local pellet. I changed their feed immediately after that.

Wonder where we can get some good recipe to prepare home made pellet. Anyone mind sharing some ideas?

To Save Or Get A New Bunny: My View On The Lives Of Malaysian Rabbits

I am not too sure about other countries but in Malaysia, rabbits are one of the cheapest pets and also easily purchased. As you would guess, it is cheap because the supply is always greater than the demand. The current market price for a local rabbit (mixed breed) is in the range of $40 to $80.

That being said, most vets in Malaysia are not rabbit savvy. Why? For the same reason as above. It is cheap to get a rabbit and to treat a rabbit for any illnesses is expensive. So either the vet could not be bothered to recommend the treatment or the owner could not be bothered paying for medical fees which are higher than the purchase price of a little bunny. The price of medical treatment begins at $20 and depending on the severity of individual cases, it may cost up to hundreds.

Sad? It is super duper sad case.

Over the weekend, something happened that gave me a little hope. People are starting to go to vets for treatments. Soon, vet would have to keep up with the demands of rabbit owners going to them for consultations and treatments. That is a good thing.

Vets who depends a lot on the dogs and cats business should start equip themselves with sound rabbit knowledge because rabbit matters as much as dogs and cats.

I am glad to have a good vet to help me with my rabbits. But for those that do not have a rabbit-savvy vet, what I would suggest is to do some research on the common illnesses, write down a few possible treatments and get your vet to administer those treatments. Some vets are honest enough to admit that they are not well versed but are willing to help – these are the best to work with. Most of the time, when a rabbit owner brings his/her rabbit to the vet, it would have been a life and death situation. So in my opinion, since it is already a hopeless situation, I would try anything to at least fight for a 50:50 chance in saving my rabbit’s life.

Rabbits are indeed great pets to have. Don’t you agree?

I need 48 hours a day!!!

I was reading through another rabbitry’s blog on how we always spend all the time in the world fretting over small matters and take our rabbits for granted. I have to admit that I am guilty of that because for the longest time, I did not realize that all the time I spent for my bunnies so far is only doing all the cleaning and feeding. I also realized that I have not been spending quality time with my rabbits. I did not enjoy them as pets as much as I should.

I was talking to my wife the other day about how other rabbit owners have all the time to spend enjoying their rabbits. Cleaning does not seemed to be a big part of their routine. On the other hand, I am always busy cleaning.

The rabbitry will be shifted to a new location hopefully in another 2 months time and in the midst of all the arrangements, my mind is constantly thinking of how to have better husbandry. Waste management would be my main concern as I would like to stop spending so much time cleaning. I want an easy way to clean so that I could spend more time appreciating the bunnies.

I had some problem remembering posting this blog. I normally get ideas to blog whenever I am out and away from my computer. Now that I have penned this down, I am happy.
