Playing towards a healthy mind…

So far, I have not write about giving my rabbits toys to play with. On some occasions I do give them toilet rolls but I believe they deserve better toys than that. The only reason that I am unable to give them toys to play with is because of space. I like to see them having larger space so that I could include some mind-stimulating toys to keep them mentally healthy.

Yes, your rabbits do not get bored alone but needs some mental stimulation. Although it may just seemed like chewing on the toys, they do benefit from having toys. Cardboard boxes could be use for hiding and scratching. Wood blocks could be used for them to chew and “swing” around.

In short they will benefit more with toys especially rabbits kept alone. It is the same concept with other animals. Have you ever seen a lion walking in circles after being caged up for too long? That is what we call PACING. They pace around because the cages are too small and there isn’t much to do in those cages.

I hope my rabbits do not start pacing or show some awkward behavior.

It would be feasible to pamper my hoppers with loads of toys soon and I am very happy to know that I could improve the quality of life for all my rabbits. Firstly, it would be possible because I am getting some toys from SB and also I would be able to give the rabbits more space once we move!

YAY! Happy days ahead for bunnies and me!

Love & Hate Relationship

I was thinking of pushing my breeding schedule a little forward so that I could have kits in the nest box end of June. For the past 3 days I have been trying to breed BlueBerry to Skor (under supervision that is) but BlueBerry does not seemed to accept Skor. Skor finds it hard to mate with her (I hope he is not that old – LOL) because she kept on running away.

Today they lied down side by side and it was quite a cute sight to behold. But I wanted them to mate, not just lie down beside each other. After a while both were at different corners seemed to be sulking. I wonder what the heck happened to them. Maybe Skor said something mean to her while lying down beside her. Loust pick up lines perhaps.

Bandie and Adinna accepted Skor instantly when I placed them together previously and it is so different with BlueBerry. Hope she will accept him soon because she has been showing me some behavior that seemed to say that she is ready to mate but when I place her with Skor, it is otherwise.

I have been putting them together in the evening. Maybe I’ll try putting them together in the morning over the weekend and hopefully they are morning people as suggested by SB. LOL!!!!

Tru-Luv Holly Hope: Day 35

It is pure joy to see Holly Hope growing up alright so far. Another 3 weeks and I can breath easy. I was all geared up for the photo shoot this evening as I prepared a little backdrop to take photos of Holly Hope. I waited for the right moment to click the camera button and when Holly Hope did a superb pose, the camera turned off itself and the screen reads “CHANGE BATTERIES”. OH DARN! All the curses I could ever thought of just came off my mouth and I was so furious.

Luckily for my Sony Ericson K750i 2.0 Mega Pixels camera phone, I was able to take some decent photos. When batteries fail, you can definitely count on Sony Ericson (an endorsement line worth some sponsorship)! To be honest, my camera cellphone has been a great companion with me especially when I am on the move and needs to blog with photos. Since I stopped blogging on the other end, I forgot all about it until those darn batteries failed me on my Canon PowerShot camera. My Canon PowerShot A710 is another great companion for blogging (yet another free advertisement worth some sponsorship).

The conclusion and moral of the story is, keep those batteries FULLY CHARGED!!!!

Here’s CUTE Holly Hope:

Top view looking good….

What’s up!?

I disapprove you making me pose for so darn long!!!

Fickle, Erratic, Indecisiveness

In certain situations it may be really difficult for us to make up our minds as to settle for the best solutions or options.

I normally do not face much of this sort of situation because I normally have an idea of what I want with my rabbits. For example, if I need to decide on which kit to keep, I normally take the queue from the way they grow up. At certain age, you can roughly tell if they are growing up nicely.

I normally start to cull my rabbits mentally quite early because decisions must be made pretty fast when space is an issue. With a mental note on which to keep and which to cull, I will be able to execute my decision when the time is right.

I just hope that it will stay that way so that I will not be making life miserable for others. Imagine a hopeful child anticipating to get his first pet rabbit and how his/her hope is dashed just because I cannot make up my mind. Not something I would love to experience myself.

It is quite normal to come across people that have the worst ways of making decisions. Some people changes their mind as fast as they made it up and I believe it is very frustrating being on the receiving end. Luckily most of these people I encountered are not rabbit people. They are just some acquaintances that I deal with and I do not hope to bump into any rabbit people whom are like that. There are too many Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde around and I believe the world is beautiful enough without more.

Hope your every dealings in life goes smoothly and without glitches.

The waiting game

In the world today, there is so many things that are instant. We have instant noodles, fast foods and all sorts of things that we can acquire on the fly.

Unfortunately, it is so different with life. Take rabbits for instance, you have to wait for a doe to be willing to accept a buck, wait for a doe to kindle, wait for kits to grow, and the waiting list goes on for various part of the hobby.

Those are just some of the waitings which I call good waits. What I hate most waiting is going through some processes for acquire something. There is still no signs of us moving into the new place anytime soon and I am growing anxious by the days. I totally hate this because I am so looking forward to see my rabbits happy in the new rabbitry that I have planned out.

I for one will be the happiest to materialize the concept I have on my mind!

I just cannot wait go get things moving. Right now, we’re just stuck!

Snip Snip…

I have been thinking a lot about rabbit neutering lately and guess what I found at the hardware store yesterday?

I found this wonderful cutting tool that is just perfect for the neutering procedure. It can cut through 5mm wire with ease.

Dear readers, NEVER EVER try this at home!

I AM JUST JOKING!!! This is the wire cutter for me to cut part of the cages off so that they could fit into my new shelving units. I am slowly getting all the materials needed to prepare for the move. Stay tuned for some nice DIY rabbitry constructions.

P.S.: This is an unrehearsed prank. Never EVER try to neuter/spay your pet(s) on your own. Please consult a qualified VETERINARIAN.

New Rabbitry Shelf: Proof Of Concept #1

I bought 2 shelving units earlier this afternoon to prepare for the move to our new place. I must say that it did not go as well as expected. It is mainly because firstly, the length of the shelving units were measured in millimeters and it was 1200mm. 1200mm is a little less than 48 inches and I thought it would be alright because my cages are barely 24 inches each when I measured them. Turned out, the length of the shelves cannot take two 24 inches cages! I need to improvise the length of the cages (by cutting of course). I will get that sorted out later.

Secondly, the Chloroplast sheet is exactly 4 feet (48 inches) and I do not have enough length to fold up the sides for it to work as pee guard. DARN! I went through it be trial and error and finally realize that I could use the wooden board that came with the shelving units as support for the Chloroplast sheets. I guess I need to find longer Chloroplast sheets then.

Overall, I would say that my first POC for a DIY rabbitry shelving unit with waste management FAILED badly!

Nonetheless, here are some photos:

My stand on Neutering/Spaying

I have always supported the cause for responsible pet ownership and if someone ask me if they should spay or neuter their pet rabbit, I would strongly encourage them to do so. And especially here in Malaysia.

I realize over time that we are overloaded with mixed breeds. Not that I am against mixed breeds, I am just against irresponsible breeding. I believe if you want to breed, make sure you breed for quality improvement and also always have the future generation on your mind. We must always be responsible for our future generation especially in what we want to pass on to them.

Mixed breeds make the best pets and there is no doubt about that. But for me personally, I prefer to venture into purebreds. So being an enthusiast of purebreds, my personal stand is that I share the best of my rabbits with fellow enthusiasts.

So as for neutering and spaying, I will strongly recommend it without thinking twice about it. Mainly because there are too many opportunists around that exploits their pets in the expense of money. In my humble opinion, if one breeds ethically, he or she may never gain any profit. When one gains profit out of breeding pets, usually they are cutting edges and the quality of the pets is at stake.

Neutering and spaying pets control to a certain degree the possibility that your pet will be exploited if they happen to be passed on from hand to hand. Most of these irresponsible breeders are so blinded by money that they could not be bothered with the genetic makeup of the rabbit.

Neutering and spaying will help control the number of unwanted pets.

Someone emailed me this morning and mention to me that he and his son is planning to neuter both their bucks. I strongly encourage that and I gave him credit for it because not only he is being a responsible owner, he is teaching his son to be the same. Very credible pet owner and this is the type of rabbit owner I would like to share my rabbits with. That being said, I hope I do not get loads of emails telling me that they plan to get a rabbit from me and they will spay/neuter them but ends up losing contact with me and the rabbits do not get spayed/neutered but instead when I get updates on them, they already had 3 “accidental” litters of bunnies.

I would neuter or spay my pets if they are not for breeding but at this moment, my aim is to produce good quality Holland Lops. Therefore, I cannot spay/neuter my rabbits.

Rabbits & Vaccinations

Someone asked me in the forum whether I would recommend vaccinations for rabbits. In my opinion, I will only vaccinate any of my pets based on the following:

1) Outbreak of disease
I do not find it necessary to vaccinate rabbits when there is no sign of outbreak. At this moment, there are 2 viruses that rabbits need to be vaccinated against – Myxomatosis & Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). And touch wood, these viruses have not came into Malaysia, yet!

2) Availability of vaccines
Of course it would not be possible to vaccinate rabbits if the vaccines are not available. Dogs and cats are the common pets being treated and vaccines for these pets are readily available. I cannot say the same for rabbits. And the sad reality is, not many local vets know how to treat rabbits and that alone tells me that they will never spend too much on stocking up on rabbit vaccines.

My conclusion is, I will not vaccinate my rabbits until it is absolutely necessary. I rather take prevention measure like keeping my rabbits free from mites and fleas which are the agent for the above mentioned viruses/diseases.
